  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the microleakage of 5 curing methods in class V composite restorations which are composed of two-step light curing, pulse-delay cure, low curing-light intensity, moderate curing-light intensity and high curing-light intensity. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of 50 extracted human upper or lower molars on cementum margin. Single Bond adhesive and Z-100 shade A2 were applied for each group following the manufacture's instruction. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into 5 groups of 10 samples (20 surfaces) each. Group 1: two-step light curing; Group 2: pulse-delay cure; Group 3: low curing-light intensity; Group 4: moderate curing-light intensity; Group 5: high curing-light intensity. After 500 thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, the 60 teeth were placed in 2% methylene blue dye for 24 hours, then rinsed with tab water. The specimens were embedded in clear resin, then sectioned buccolingually through the center of restoration with a low speed diamond saw. The dye penetration on each of the specimen was then observed with a stereomicroscope at ${\times}20$. The composite resin/tooth interfaces were examined under Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis One Way ANOVA and Dunn's Method. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In all groups, the leakage values seen at the enamel margin were significantly lower than those seen at the dentin margin(P<0.05). 2. No group in this study showed significant differences in leakage values at both the enamel and the dentin margins(P<0.05). 3. In all groups, the gaps seen at the enamel margin were significantly lower than those seen at the dentin margin(P<0.05). 4. The gaps in this study showed significant differences and two-step light-curing and low curing-light intensity produced significant less gap than high curing-light intensity(P<0.05).

  • The restorations of the severely damaged teeth by post core have been increased with the developement of endodontic procedures. But high failure rates of these procedures being reported, various restorative modifications were induced for successful treatments. Cast post-core and prefabricated post with core buildups are choice of treatment. The main causes of failure of the restorations are the fracture of post and core, root fracture, and recurrent caries due to microleakage. Recently, the acid etching technique and the use of dentin bonding agent at tooth surface to reduce the possible microleakage at the tooth-restoration interfaces were introduced. The object of this study was to measure and compare the microleakage by the types and cementation methods of post-core. For this study, forty extracted human anterior teeth were selected for specimen. After cleansing and routine endodontic procedures, anatomic crowns of each specimen were removed at the level of 2mm above the cementoenamel junction. Canals were preparated for post insertion and specimens were divided into four groups randomly. Post-cores were fabricated according to method for each group. Microleakage was measured by length of dye penetration at the tooth-restoration interfaces with measuring microscope at 50 magnification. Oneway ANOVA and t-test were performed for statistical analysis of resulting data. The following results were obtained from this study. 1. There wert significant statistical differences in degree of microleakage between each group (p<0.01). 2. Cast post-core cemented with ZPC (Group I) showed the most severe microleakage pattern$(1.5547{\pm}0.0872mm)$, and cast post-core cemented with adhesive resin cement after tooth surface treatment with dentin bonding agent (Group II) showed the least microleakage $(0.1497{\pm}0.0872mm)$. 3. Group IV revealed less dye penetrations than group III, but no statistical significance was seen between two groups.

  • Adhesives derived from renewable resources allow wood panel producers to make lower cost alternatives to formaldehyde-based adhesive resins. Among them, adhesive components extracted from industrial by-products or wastes are the most important research fields in the efficient utilization of waste and cost reduction. In our study, the rapeseed flour, which is a by product from the production of biodiesel extracted from rapeseed, was introduced to develop alternative adhesives for the production of wood flooring. The rapeseed flour was hydrolyzed with 1% sodium hydroxide solution and PF prepolymers were prepared with 3-molar ratios, 1.8, 2.1 and 2.4. The linear fracture mechanics was introduced to evaluate the glue bond quality in wood flooring composed of fancy-veneered and plywood, and the formaldehyde emission and adhesive penetration were also investigated. The formaldehyde emissions of wood flooring met the requirement of the standard of $SE_0$ specified in the KS standard. The rapeseed flour adhesive penetrated sufficiently into the vessel elements and lumens in fancy veneer and plywood and gave strong bond quality to the wood flooring. The fracture mechanics was introduced to evaluate the adhesive joint between fancy veneer and plywood. The critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) of boliva overlayed wood flooring was increased with increasing molar ratio and this was the same tendency in oak overlayed wood flooring. From the results, the formulated adhesives were efficiently used to bond fancy veneer onto the plywood to make wood flooring and showed a potential to be used as a component of environmentally friendly adhesive resin systems for production of flooring.

  • Amalgam is one of the most commonly used dental restoration material because of its convenience, economic and physical properties. But microleakage in the tooth and amalgam interface has been its major problem, and many efforts have been made to overcome this shortcoming. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of various liners on microleakage of amalgam restoration. Cavities were prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of ninety sound, extracted human premolars and six different liners (Tubulitec$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$ with polymer, Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$, Copalite$^{(R)}$, No liner) were unapplied according to manufacturer's instructions and amalgam had been condensed immediately. The specimens were thermocycled by dipping in methylene blue dye at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 1500 cycles. The amalgam-tooth interface was examined under stereobinocular microscope and the dye penetration was scored. The results were as follows : 1. The Tubulitec$^{(R)}$ group showed less microleakage than no liner or Copalite$^{(R)}$ group (p<0.01). 2. The Tubulitec$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$ with polymer and Scotch bond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$ groups were not significantly different. 3. The Copalite$^{(R)}$ and Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$ groups were not significantly different. Using the polystyrene liner and resin liners under admixed type of high-copper amalgam restoration significantly reduced microleakage in the tooth-amalgam interface. Further clinical studies on polystyrene liner are recommended.

  • To evaluate the marginal leakage in Class V cavity this study has been undertaken to compare the sandwich technique with the conventional method, and find out the effect of lining material, lining method, and polishing time on sandwich technique. Ninty extracted teeth were divided into eight test groups and a control group, and were prepared with a buccal Class V cavity. Four test groups were lined with Dentin Cement whereas the other four test groups were lined with Vitrabond. Half of the either group were lined 0.5mm short of the carvosurface margin and the rest were lined completely to the carvosurface margin. The four subgroups were further divided into specimens which were polished immediately and 24 hours after resin filling. The polished specimens were immersed in $37^{\circ}C$, 0.5% methylene blue solution for 24 hous after thermocycling at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, 200 times and buccolingually sectioned. The sectioned specimens were examined dye penetration under the light microscope. The following results were obtained, 1. At the enamel margin, the conventional method showed a lower microleakage than the sandwich technique. The difference between the control and Vitrabond group was statistically significant(P<0.05), but no difference between the control and Dentin Cement group, and between the lining materials was observed. 2. At the dentinal margin, the sandwich technique showed a significant lower amount of microleakage (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the lining materials. 3. Regardless of the lining material, lining method, and polishing time used, values of microleakage were significantly higher at the dentinal margin compared to the enamel margin(P<0.05). 4. In specimens till the cavosurface margin, microleakage at the dentinal margin was less with the light-cured base than with the chemically-cured base, but there was no siginificantly difference between the lining materials regarding the lining method and polishing time. 5. The lining material, lining method, and polishing time did not affect the amount of micro leakage in the sandwich technique(P<0.05).

  • Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the microleakage and penetration of fissure sealant in permanent molar teeth with fluorosis after pretreatment of the occlusal surface. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 third molars with mild dental fluorosis were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 20). The tooth surfaces were sealed with an unfilled resin fissure sealant (FS) material. The experimental groups included: 1) phosphoric acid etching (AE) + FS (control); 2) AE + One-Step Plus (OS, Bisco) + FS; 3) bur + AE + FS; 4) bur + AE + OS + FS; 5) Er:YAG laser + AE + FS; and 6) Er:YAG laser + AE + OS + FS. After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in 0.5% fuchsin and sectioned. Proportions of mircoleakage (PM) and unfilled area (PUA) were measured by digital microscope. Results: Overall, there were significant differences among all groups in the PM (p = 0.00). Group 3 showed the greatest PM, and was significantly different from groups 2 to 6 (p < 0.05). Group 6 showed the lowest PM. Pretreatment with Er:YAG with or without adhesive led to less PM than bur pretreatment. There were no significant differences among groups in PUA. Conclusions: Conventional acid etching provided a similar degree of occlusal seal in teeth with fluorosis compared to those pretreated with a bur or Er:YAG laser. Pretreatment of pits and fissures with Er:YAG in teeth with fluorosis may be an alternative method before fissure sealant application.

  • This study was designed to assess the degree of the marginal leakage of posterior composite restorations with glass ionomer cement base and Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ by means of the dye penetration at the enamel and dentinal margins. 160 cavities of class V were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 80 extracted premolar and molar teeth, which were divided into two groups. The buccal cavities of one group were filled with GC lining cement$^{(R)}$, Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ and P 50$^{(R)}$ and the lingual cavities were filled with Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ and Heliomolar$^{(R)}$. The Buccal cavities of other group were filled with Logobond$^{(R)}$, Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ and Heliomolar$^{(R)}$ and lingual cavities were filled with Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ and P 50$^{(R)}$. After finishing, all specimens were subjected manually to 50 thermal cycles at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. They were immersed in 0.5% methylene blue solution for 24 hours and buccolingually sectioned with diamond disc. The sectioned specimens were examined under light microscope. The following results were obtained. 1. The group filled with glass ionomer cement base showed less marginal leakage than the group filled without glass ionomer cement base. 2. The enamel margins showed less microleakage than the dentinal margins in both of the two groups. 3. No significant difference was showed in the microleakage, irrespective of two glass ionomer cement base and posterior composite resin.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of compomers. In this in vitro study, class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of thirty extracted human premolars and molars on cementum cervical margin. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into five groups of six samples (12 surfaces) each, Group 1 : Dyract AP, Group 2 : F2000 compomer(non-etch), Group 3 : F2000 compomer(etch), Group 4 : Elan, Group 5 : Compoglass. The bonding agents and compomer were applied for each group following the manufacturer's instructions. After 500 thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, the 30 teeth were placed 1% methylene blue dye for 24 hours then rinsed with tab water. The specimens were embedded in clear resin, then sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration with a low speed diamond saw. The dye penetration on each of the specimen was observed with a stereomicroscope. The results of study were statistically analyzed using the Student-Newmann-Kaul' s Test. The results were obtained as follows. 1. All compomer restoration systems did not completely prevent marginal leakage. 2. In enamel margin, F2000 compomer(etch) group showed lower leakage value than other systems. Elan and Compoglass groups showed lower leakage value than Dyract AP and F2000 compomer(non-etch) groups (p<0.05). 3. In cementum margin, F2000 compomer(etch) and F2000 compomer (non-etch) groups showed lower leakage value than other systems. Dyract AP and Elan groups showed lower leakage value than Compoglass group (p<0.05).
