The objective of this study was to test the effects of crown material, cement type, the direction in which stress is applied and distribution of luting cement that might lead to cement microfracture using 2D Finite Element Method. Twenty three finite element models with a chamfer margin configuration were generated for a mandibular first molar. Crown models exhibited four crown materials: type 3 gold alloy, Ni-Cr alloy, ceramic and composite resin, and two luting cements: zinc phosphate and glass ionomer cements with a thicknesses of $70{\mu}m$. Modeled crowns were loaded axially or obliquely at unit load of 1 N. Areas and levels of stress concentrations within the cement were determined. Stress in the cement layer at the margins of crowns were higher than those in the area away from the margin. Stress under oblique loads were much higher than under axial load. The stiffer crown material produced higher stress and similarly, higher stress were found in cements with the greater Young's modulus.

Dental injuries with crown fracture occur frequently, especially in young patient Reattachment of the crown fragment has been shown to yield good esthetic results in that original tooth anatomy is restored with a material that abrades at a rate indntical to that of the adjacent tooth substance and at the same time permits continual monitoring of pulpal status through the fragment. Case 1 was complicated crown fracture with pin-point bleed ing, that was treated by direct pulp capping with calcium hydroxide and fragment reattachment. Case 2 was in trusive luxation with complicated crown fracture and was treated by pulp treatment and fragment reattachment. Case 3 was uncomplicated crown fracture, and fracture line involved slightly biologic width and treated by reattachment of the crown fragment.
Objectives: To determine the retentive strength and failure mode of undercut composite post, glass fiber post and polyethylene fiber post luted with flowable composite resin and resin-cement. Materials and Methods: Coronal parts of 120 primary canine teeth were sectioned and specimens were treated endodontically. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 20). Prepared root canals received intracanal retainers with a short composite post, undercut composite post, glass fiber post luted with flowable resin or resin-cement, and polyethylene fiber post luted with flowable resin or resin-cement. After crown reconstruction, samples were tested for retentive strength and failure mode. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). Results: There were statistically significant differences between groups (p = 0.001). Mean bond strength in the undercut group was significantly greater than in the short composite post (p = 0.030), and the glass fiber post (p = 0.001) and the polyethylene fiber post group luted with resin-cement (p = 0.008). However, the differences between the undercut group and the groups with flowable composite as the luting agent were not significant (p = 0.068, p = 0.557). Adhesive failure was more frequent in the fiber post groups. Conclusions: Although the composite post with undercutting showed the greatest resistance to dislodgement, fiber posts cemented with flowable composite resin provided acceptable results in terms of retentive strength and fracture mode.
Purpose: The aim of this research was to establish the effect and variation in differing convergence angle and length of abutment on the retention of full veneer casted gold crown. Materials and methods: Two different length,5 mm and 10 mm in height with convergence angles of 5, 10, 15 and 25 degrees crowns were fabricated. Cementation was done using cements; zinc phosphate cement (Fleck's zinc phosphate cement), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) and resin cement (Panavia 21). These were tested for tensile force at the point of separation by using Instron Universal Testing Machine. Statistical analysis was done by SAS 6.04 package. Results: In all cements the mean retention decreased with significant difference on increase of convergence angle (P<.05). Increase in every 5 degree-convergence angel the retention rate decreased with resin-modified glass ionomer cement of 15.9% and resin cement of 14.8%. With zinc phosphate cement, there was largest decreasing rate of mean retention of 25.5% between convergence angles from 5 degree to 10 degree. When the crown length increased from 5 mm to 10 mm, the retention increased with the significant difference in the same convergence angle and in all types of cement used (P<.05). Conclusion: The retention was strongly dependent on geometric factors of abutment. Much care is required in choosing cements for an optimal retention in abutments with different convergence angles and crown lengths.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of aging and thermal cycling on the biaxial flexure strength of low commercially available veneering resin composites for crown(Dentacolor : DC, Artglass : AG, Esternia : ET and Targis : TG). Disc specimens were fabricated in a teflon mold giving 12mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness. All samples were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 was dried in a dessicator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. Group 2 was immersed in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. Group 3 was immersed in distilled water at $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. Group 4 was subjected to 10,000 thermal cycles between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$, and the immersion time in each bath was 15 seconds per cycle. Biaxial flexure test was conducted using the ball-on-three-ball method at the cross head speed of 0.5mm/min and fracture surfaces were observed with scanning electoron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Weibull modulus values, except for the AG group, decreased after thermal cycling treatment. 2. Biaxial flexure strength values of aging group at $37^{\circ}C$ were the lowest in all sample groups. Except for the DC group, strength values were significantly decreased for the drying group. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest value of biaxial flexure strength of 188.8 MPa was observed in the ET group and the lowest value of 73.2 MPa was observed in the DC group. The strength values showed the significant differences in each group (p<0.05). 4. Observation of surfaces after thermal cycling test revealed the ditching in the part of surrounding large fillers.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of fractured metal-ceramic crown on bond strength of porcelain repair resin. The specimens were divided into two groups for metal specimens add five groups for porcelain specimens by surface treatment methods. the metal specimens were treated by 2 methods. : micro-sandblasting with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and grinding with diamond bur. The porcelain specimens were treated by 5 methods : micro-sandblasting with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide, grinding with diamond bur, etching with porcelain etching agent, combination of micro-sandblasting and etching procedure, and combination of grinding and etching procedure. After surface treatment, each specimen was bonded with composite resin and the bond strength was measured and the surface texture was observed by scanning electromicroscope(SEM). The results were as follows : 1. There was significant difference in shear bond strength between metal specimen and prorcelain specimen. 2. Bood strength of metal specimens treated with diamond bur was higher than that treated with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide sandblasting. 3. Bond strength of porcelain specimen treated with diamond bur was higher than that treated with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide sandblasting and porcelain etching agent. 4. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength between the group treated with diamond bur and combined treatment groups respectively. 5. The large undercuts were observed in group treated with diamond bur by SEM.
The purpose of this study was to observe the morphologic change of dentinal surface, adhesion in interface between dentin and bonding agents, and penetration pattern of resin tags into dentinal tubles according to bonding procedure of ONE-STEP universal adhesive system. Ten extracted human molars were mounted in dental stone and sectioned to expose mid-coronal occlusal dentin and again sectioned tooth crown apically. Specimens were randomly assigned to three groups for dentin conditioning with 32% phoshoric acid, two coats of bonding agents after dentin conditioning, and bond of composite resin. The surfaces of dentin were treated with etch ant and applied bonding agent, and bonded composite resin according to the directions of manufacturer. Specimens which were boned composite were sectioned longitudinally for observing interfaces between resin and dentin. Two of specimens which were sectioned longitudinally were immersed in 6 N HCL for 30 seconds and 1% NaOCL for 12 hours to partially demineralize and deproteinize the dentin substrate. Each specimen was mounted on a brass stub, sputter-coated with gold and observed under SEM. The result were as follows : 1. On the dentinal surface which was conditioned with 32% phosphoric acid. the smear layer was completely removed. orifices of dentinal tubules were opened 3-$5{\mu}m$ wide. and dentinal surface was irregular. 2. On the dentinal surface which was applied ONE-STEP. bonding agent. resin particles were observed on the orifices of dentinal tubules and intertubular dentin. 3. There were close adaptation between dentin and resin and were the pattern which composite invaded into dentin. 4. 1-$3{\mu}m$-wide hybrid layer was visible in the interface between dentin and resin. 5. Long and funnel shaped resin tags were observed in demineralized specimens. and the surfaces of tags were rough.
Purpose: This study aimed to confirm the applicability of gloss polishing using automatic barrel finishing with respect to three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin specimens. The surface roughness and grinding angle of the 3D-printed resin specimens were observed with respect to gloss polishing time using automatic dental barrel finishing. Methods: Herein, experiments were conducted on four types of 3D-printed resin specimens. The specimens, with a thickness of 100 ㎛ each, were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, light polymerization was performed on these specimens for 15 min. Post this surface treatment, the specimens underwent grinding for 25 min. This process was followed by gloss polishing at 5-min intervals for up to 25 min using automatic dental barrel finishing. The specimens were photographed using a 3D optical microscope, and their surface roughness and grinding angle were measured. Results: The Ra (centerline average roughness) values of all the specimens, except for crown & bridge 10 group and those in the control group that were not polished using automatic barrel finishing, were <0.2 ㎛. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used. Conclusion: Gloss polishing of 3D-printed resin can be realized using automatic dental barrel finishing. All-ceramic restorations have had a more limited life expectancy than metal ceramic restorations because of their low strength. Their relatively lower strength and resistance to fracture have restricted the use of all-ceramic crowns to anterior applications where occlusal loads are lower. But there has been increasing interest in all-ceramic restorations because patients are primarily concerned with improved esthetics. Many efforts have been made to in prove the mechanical properties of dental ceramics. This study was designed to elucidate the influence of the luting agent on the strength of the Empress 2 crown (staining technique) cemented on human teeth. Seventy extracted human permanent molar teeth were chosen. Teeth were prepared for Empress 2 crowns with milling machine on a surveyor. A dental bur was placed in the mandrel that was positioned so that the long axis of the bur was perpendicular to the surveyor base. Dimensions of the Empress 2 crown preparation were $6^{\circ}$ taper on each side, $1.5{\pm}0.1mm$ shoulder margin, and 4mm crown height. The luting cements used in this study were as follow: 1. Uncemented 2. Zinc phosphate cements (Confi-Dental) 3. Conventional glass ionomer cement : Fuji 1 (GC) 4. Resin-modified glass ionomer cements : Fuji plus (GC) 5. Adhesive cements : Panavia F (Kuralay), Variolink II (Vivadent), Choice (Bisco). Fracture test using Instron. The crowns were loaded in compressive force to evaluate the effect of these cements on the breaking strength of these all-ceramic crowns. A steel ball with a diameter of 4mm was placed on the occlusal surface and load was applied to the steel ball by a cylindrical bolt with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm per minute until fracture occurred. The fractured surface was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopic Image (SEM) to discover the correlation between fracture strength and bonding capacity. Within the limitation of this in vitro study design, the results were as follows : 1. fomentations significantly increased the fracture resistance of Empress ceramic crowns compared to control. Uncemented (206.9 N): ZPC (812.9 N): Fuji 1 (879.5 N): Fuji Plus (937.7 N): Choice (1105.4 N): Variolink II (1221.1 N): Panavia F (1445.2 N). 2. Resin luting agent, treated by a silane bond enhancing agents, yielded a significant increase in fracture resistance. In some of the Panavia F group, a fracture extended into dentin. 3. According to SEM images of fractured Empress crowns, the stronger the bond at both interfaces(crown and die), the more fracture strength was acquired.
This systematic review aims to summarize the current clinical studies that investigated survival rates against fracture of endodontically treated posterior teeth restored with crowns or resin composite restorations. Literature search were performed using keywords. Publications from 1980 to 2016 were searched in PubMed, ScienceDirect, ISI Web of SCIENCE, MEDLINE, and SCOPUS. Included studies were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three clinical studies were included: 1 randomized controlled trial and 1 prospective and 1 retrospective cohort studies. Pooled survival rates ranged from 94%-100% and 91.9%-100% for crowns and resin composite, respectively. The majority of teeth had no more than 3 surface loss of tooth structure. The studies included were heterogeneous, and were not appropriate for further meta-analysis. Current evidence suggested that the survival rates against the fracture of endodontically treated posterior teeth restored with crowns or resin composites were not significantly different in the teeth with minimum to moderate loss of tooth structure.
