  • In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated. The three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analyses were conducted to investigate the characteristics of welding residual stresses in welds of high strength steels on the basis of thermal and mechanical properites at high temperature obtained from the experiment. According to the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 steel deteriorated slowly to 10$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up, the tensile strength became better because of blue shortness, and it deteriorated radically after reaching to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. For the POSTEN80 steel, high temperature tensile strength deteriorated slowly to 20$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better and it deteriorated slowly to $600^{\circ}C$ after reached to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. Strain of high strength steels at the elevated temperature increased radically after the mercury rose to $600^{\circ}C$. The strain hardening ratio of POSTEN60 steel was larger then that of POSTEN80 steel at the elevated temperature as in the case at the room temperature and it became smaller radically after the mercury rose to 40$0^{\circ}C$. And, in the welding of high strength steels, increasing tensile strength of the steel (POSTEN60

  • In this study, the residual strength prediction models were proposed by measuring various residual strength according to pit characteristics for metallic water pipes such as cast iron pipe (CIP), ductile iron pipe (DIP), and steel pipe (SP). The exponential prediction model was better fitted to measured residual tensile strength for CIP. In case of DIP and SP, the prediction model using loss of strength was more exactly predicted compared with other model types. The fracture toughness were averagely $40.46kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for CIP, $85.27kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for DIP, and $92.27kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for SP, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) of between measured residual tensile strength and predicted values for residual strength prediction models using fracture toughness was estimated from 0.44 to 0.86. Especially, the proposed residual tensile strength prediction models were applied for the verification and reliability to CIPs and DIPs at 14 sites. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) between measured residual tensile strength and predicted values was estimated from 0.76 to 0.78. Therefore it was thought that the proposed residual tensile strength models could help to support resonable and economical decision of rehabilitation/replacement.

  • The effect of discrete polypropylene fibre reinforcement on shear strength parameters, tensile properties and isotropic index of stabilized compacted residual subgrade was investigated. Composites of compacted subgrade were developed from polypropylene fibre dosage of 0%, 1%, 2.5% and 4% and 3% cement binder. Saturated compacted soil benefited from incremental fibre dosage, the mobilized friction coefficient increased to a maximum at 2.5% fibre dosage from 0.41 to 0.58 and the contribution due to further increase in fibre dosage was marginal. Binder stabilization increased the degree of isotropy for unreinforced soil at lower fibre dosage of 1% and then decreased with higher fibre dosage. Saturation of 3% binder stabilized soil decreased the soil friction angle and the degree of isotropy for both unstabilized and binder stabilized soil increased with fibre dosage. The maximum tensile stress of 3% binder stabilized fibre reinforced residual soil was 3-fold that of 3% binder stabilized unreinforced soil. The difference in computed and measured maximum tensile and tangential stress decreased with increase in fibre dosage and degree of stabilization and polypropylene fibre reinforced soil met local and international criteria for road construction subgrade.

  • The goal of this study is to assess cast iron pipes (CIPs) and present a residual tensile strength prediction model using pit characteristics and fracture toughness. The results is the followings. First, average pit depths of collected CIPs were in the range from 0.63 to 6.49 mm, loss of tensile strength compared with net metallic tensile strength were from -7.06 to 67.91 percent. Second, fracture toughness for NS-CR-1, NS-CR-2, and NS(2)-CR-1 were in the range from 62.85 to $89.39kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$, and average of those samples was $73.69kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ on CIPs. Third, the models developed in this study by using pit characteristics and fracture toughness showed a little good correlation for measured residual tensile strength, and the results will be expected to help for water utilities to manage CIPs in the aspect of rehabilitation and assessment of structural safety on CIPs.

  • The experimental set-up and one-dimensional analytical model have been developed to investigate the tensile behavior of reinforced concrete member due to restrained drying shrinkage. The experimental results have been compared with the analytical prediction of the maximum residual stress of steel and concrete due to restrained shrinkage. The tensile residual stress concrete by one-dimensional bilinear model shows 0.19 and 0.63 of tensile strength for 0.83% and 3.29 of steel ratio. The residual tensile stress of concrete increases as the steel ratio increases. The effect of steel fiber has not influenced the residual stress due to restrained shrinkage of concrete.

  • Major problems in welding Al-7020 include shrinkage, rpopositgy in welds and loss of strength in the heat affected zone. Thus it is important to examine the mechanical properties and reliability of welds. In this study, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the mechanical properties such as micro-hardness distribution, tensile strength, porosity and residual stress distribution of the Al-7020 weldment made by pulse-GMA welding. The resuts of the experiemnts are as folows. 1) The micro-hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone was lower than that of the base metal. 2) The tensile strength of the deposited metal was much lower than that of the base metal. 3) The porrosity in weld metal zone was negligible under the adopted conditsion of experiemnts. 4) The residual stress in the weld metal was lower than that of the heat affected zone, because the weld metal was softened. And the mciro-hardness distribution, the tensile strength and the residual stess distribution of the weldment in the as-welded condition were compared with those of the weldment after heat treatment.

  • To achieve the aim of this study, 9 different types of samples were made to examine mechanical property according to structured pattern and type of Machi of pullover armhole of WholeGarment(seamless knitwear). With respect to samples, from which comparisons are made and anaylzed among basic characteristics of material, tensile strength & elongation and residual elongation due to repeated extension of armhole connecting part, the following conclusions could be obtained. It's revealed that the tensile strength of Machi part as being armhole connecting part of samples is more affected by Machi type than pattern structure. Of Machi types, it showed stronger tensile strength in the order of Normal(Normal Machi)< Machi_B(unilateral Machi)

  • In this study, the effects of cryogenic treatment cycles on the residual stress and mechanical properties of 7075 aluminum alloy (Al7075) samples, in the form of a tube-shaped product with a diameter of 500 nm, were investigated. Samples were first subjected to solution treatment at $470^{\circ}C$, followed by cryogenic treatment and aging treatment. The residual stress and mechanical properties of the samples were systematically characterized. Residual stress was measured with a cutting method using strain gauges attached on the surface of the samples; in addition, tensile strength and Vickers hardness tests were performed. The detailed microstructure of the samples was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that samples with 85 % relief in residual stress and 8% increase in tensile strength were achieved after undergoing three cycles of cryogenic treatments; this is in contrast to the samples processed by conventional solution treatment and natural aging (T4). The major reasons for the smaller residual stress and relatively high tensile strength for the samples fabricated by cryogenic treatment are the formation of very small-sized precipitates and the relaxation of residual stress during the low temperature process in uphill quenching. In addition, samples subjected to three cycles of cryogenic treatment demonstrated much lower residual stress than, and similar tensile strength compared to, those samples subjected to one cycle of cryogenic treatment or artificial aging treatment.

  • Fatigue strength of the welding structure is governed by the residual stress at the weldment toe and static tensile overloads were known as relieving the residual stresses. In this study, static tensile overloads were applied to the welding structures which caused the relief of residual stresses. The amount of residual stress relief was found as proportional to the change of fatigue limit at the given conditions. Based on the fact of the proportionality between the change of fatigue limit and that of residual stress, simple measurement technique is proposed. Modified stress-life curves base on proposed technique gave good agreement with test results.

  • In this study, using the plasma spray method, tensile and compression fatigue tests are performed in saline solution to examine the effect of Ti undercoat on corrosion fatigue behavior of alumina-coated specimens. The alumina-coated material using Ti in the undercoat shows better corrosion fatigue strength than the base material in the entire stress amplitude range. Fatigue cracking of UT specimens occurs in the recess formed by grit-blasting treatment and progresses toward the base metal. Subsequently, the undercoat is destroyed at a stage where the deformation of the undercoat cannot follow the crack opening displacement. The residual stress of the UT specimen has a tensile residual stress up to about 100 ㎛ below the surface of the base material; however, when the depth exceeds 100 ㎛, the residual stress becomes a compressive residual stress. In addition, the inside of the spray coating film is compressive residual stress, which contributes to improving the fatigue strength characteristics. A hardened layer due to grit-blasting treatment is formed near the surface of the UT specimen, contributing to the improvement of the fatigue strength characteristics. Since the natural potential of Ti spray coating film is slightly higher than that of the base material, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance; however, when physiological saline intrudes, a galvanic battery is formed and the base material corrodes preferentially.
