The influence of residual stress on the engineering behaviour of rock (잔류응력이 암석의 공학적 거동에 끼치는 영향)

  • Critical literature review in this study revealed that there can be a significant influence of the residual stress on the engineering properties of rock. The review also showed that few number of research works on the quantification of the influence was attributed to the limitation of the two classical measurement techniques, viz, X-ray diffraction and mechanical relaxation method. In this study, a new way of approach was sought based on the assumption that residual stress up to the failure. A series of hoop tests conducted onthe samples from the limb of Carboniferous Limestone in Clevedon, England, revealed that (i) there is no preferential orientations of microcracks and minerals which have been widely believed as the main source of the strength anisotropy of rock; (ii) the anisotropy of the tensile strength of the limestone results from the influence of the residual stress; (iii) since jointing commenced within the fold, residual stored strain energy has been released preferentially in the direction perpendicular to the major joints(o$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$); (ⅳ) during the hoop test making it much easier to create tensile fracture in these directons, viz 45$^{\circ}$ and 135$^{\circ}$)was released during the hoop test making it much easier to create tensile fracture in these directions, viz 45$^{\circ}$and 135$^{\circ}$;(v) the direction in which the stored strain energy may be presumed to be the least, required the greatest work to cause failure.

Precise attitude determination strategy for spacecraft based on information fusion of attitude sensors: Gyros/GPS/Star-sensor

  • The rigorous requirements of modern spacecraft missions necessitate a precise attitude determination strategy. This paper mainly researches that, based on three space-borne attitude sensors: 3-axis rate gyros, 3-antenna GPS receiver and star-sensor. To obtain global attitude estimation after an information fusion process, a feedback-involved Federated Kalman Filter (FKF), consisting of two subsystem Kalman filters (Gyros/GPS and Gyros/Star-sensor), is established. In these filters, the state equation is implemented according to the spacecraft's kinematic attitude model, while the residual error models of GPS and star-sensor observed attitude are utilized, to establish two observation equations, respectively. Taking the sensors' different update rates into account, these two subsystem filters are conducted under a variable step size state prediction method. To improve the fault tolerant capacity of the attitude determination system, this paper designs malfunction warning factors, based on the principle of ${\chi}^2$ residual verification. Mathematical simulation indicates that the information fusion strategy overwhelms the disadvantages of each sensor, acquiring global attitude estimation with precision at a 2-arcsecs level. Although a subsystem encounters malfunction, FKF still reaches precise and stable accuracy. In this process, malfunction warning factors advice malfunctions correctly and effectively.

  • An efficient numerical method is developed to estimate the elasto-plastic post-buckling strength of space-framed structures. The inelastic ultimate strength of beam-columns and frames is evaluated by the parametric study. Applying the improved plastic hinge analysis that evaluate the gradual stiffness decrease effects due to spread of plasticity, elasto-plastic post-buckling behavior of steel frames is investigated considering the various residual stress distributions. Introducing the plastification parameter that represent pread of plasticity in the element and performing parametric study of equivalent element force and member idealization, finite-element solutions for the elasto-plastic analysis of space frames are compared with the results by plastic region analysis, shell elements and experimental results.

  • This paper considers the effects of propellant mixture ratio and loading errors on the performance of a liquid rocket. Propellant residuals generated by error sources are analyzed for a launch vehicle model whose first stage consists of a cluster rocket of four 75-tonf class engines using a statistical Monte-Carlo approach and then the optimal fuel biases minimizing residuals are computed. The results are validated through comparison with analytic method using approximate formula, which have been applied for other space launch vehicles.

  • This paper can be used for GPS air navigation study on integrity monitoring algorithm as, the projected horizontal plane using GPS pseudorange residuals for fault detection satellites were suspected. Failure to remove the detected suspicious satellite, compare with threshold which is calculated using satellite deployment (PDOP) and determine whether the failure is presented. The theory that horizontal projection of the satellite failure residuals greater than residual of normal satellite is proved mathematically. Comparison with horizontal projection residuals are likely to malfunction in the satellite were presented. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, bias fault insert into GPS pseudorange, and compare with conventional parity space method about fault detection and isolation capability.

  • Most video coding systems use YCbCr color space for their inputs, but RGB space is more preferred in the field of high fidelity video because the compression gain from YCbCr becomes disappeared in the high quality operation region. In order to improve the coding performance of RGB video signal, this paper presents an adaptive frequency-selective weighted prediction algorithm. Based on the sign agreement and the strength of frequency-domain correlation of residual color planes, the proposed scheme adaptively selects the frequency elements as well as the corresponding prediction weights for better utilization of inter-plane correlation of RGB signal. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm improves the coding gain of around 13% bitrate reduction, on average, compared to the common mode of 4:4:4 video coding in the state-of-the-art video compression standard, H.264/AVC.

  • This essay criticizes Van Fraassen's argument for empirical equivalence among competing theories, which is based on his interpretation of Newtonian space-time. I argue that his misleading interpretation of the ontology of absolute space-time results in his ineffective attacks against a residual structure of space-time, absolute velocity. Van Fraassen's argument basically misleads us into empirical equivalence in that his literal reading of Newtonian space-time disregards a variety of aspects of its model.

  • Residual shear strength should be taken into consideration as well as peak one when analysing stability of slopes constituted by weathered rock or overconsolidated soils since such materials could be subjected to progressive failure mechanism. When landslide of a slope is related to progressive failure phenomenon, the failure might occur even though shear strength of the slope materials does not reach their residual shear strength over the whole slip surface. Therefore, stability of the slope concerned may be overstimated or underestimated when using only its peak or residual shear srength parameters. In this study, his theory has been extended to estimate the distance of failed zone for a plane slope and the results calculated by this extended equatio has been compared with that obtained by numerical modelling using FLAC. In addition, stress state on the slip surface has been, in detail, analysed to understand failure mechanism when a limited progressive failure occurs. Effects of mechanical and hydraulic factors on progressive failure have also been analysed.

Distributions of Local Supply and Exhaust Effectiveness according to Room Airflow Patterns

  • A pulsed tracer gas technique is applied to measure the distributions of local mean age and local mean residual-life-time of air in a half-scale experimental chamber, The airflow patterns in the chamber are visualized by a Helium bubble generator for three different exhaust locations. A supply slot is located at the top of a right wall, and an exhaust slot is at either bottom-left (Case 1), bottom-right (Case 2), or top-left (Case 3) location. Results show that the distributions of local mean age and local mean residual-life-time are different from each other, but both of them are closely related to the airflow pattern in the space. Included are discussions on explaining the variations of overall room ventilation effectiveness depending upon airflow rates for three different supply-exhaust configurations.

The Effects of Temperature Change on the Bending Strength of CF/PEEK Laminates after Impact (온도변화가 CF/PEEK 적층재의 충격 후 굽힘강도에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, when CF/PEEK laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(interlaminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/PEEK laminates and the relationship between residual lift and impact damages are experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interlaces [$0^{\circ}_4/90^{\circ}_8/0^{\circ}_4$]. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CF/PEEK laminates to generate impact damages. And then CF/PEEK specimens with impact damages are observed by a scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations are experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/PEEK laminates.
