In this paper, when CF/EPOXY laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(inter laminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/EPOXY laminates and the relationship between residual life and impact damages ale experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_6/90^{\circ}_6]S$ and four-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_3/90^{\circ}_6/0^{\circ}_3]S$. CF/EPOXY specimens with impact damages caused by a steel ball launched from the air gun were observed by the scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations were experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/EPOXY laminates. And as the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delaminaion areas of impact-induced damages decrease linearly. A linear relationship between the impact energy and the delamination areas were observed. As the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delamination areas decrease because of higher initial delaminatin damage energy.
The reinforced concrete (RC) structures usually suffer large residual displacements under strong motions. The large residual displacements may substantially reduce the anti-seismic capacity of structures during the aftershock and increase the difficulty and cost of structural repair after an earthquake. To reduce the adverse residual displacement, several self-centering energy dissipation braces (SCEBs) have been proposed to be installed to the RC structures. To investigate the seismic responses of the RC structures with SCEBs under the earthquake excitation, an extended Bouc-Wen model with degradation and self-centering effects is developed in this study. The extended model realized by MATLAB/Simulink program is able to capture the hysteretic characteristics of the RC structures with SCEBs, such as the energy dissipation and the degradation, especially the self-centering effect. The predicted hysteretic behavior of the RC structures with SCEBs based on the extended model, which used the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for parameter identification, is compared with the experimental results. Comparison results show that the predicted hysteretic curves can be in good agreement with the experimental results. The nonlinear dynamic analyses using the extended model are then carried out to explore the seismic performance of the RC structures with SCEBs. The analysis results demonstrate that the SCEB can effectively reduce the residual displacements of the RC structures, but slightly increase the acceleration.
Wire electrical discharge machining experiments in conducted to investigate characteristics of acoustic emission (AE) and electrical discharge energy due to current peak (I$_{p}$), pulse on time($\tau$/on/). The AE signals are obtained with a sensor attached to workpiece side. Machining states are identified with scanning electron microscopy and residual stress analyzer. It is demonstrated that the residual stress provide reliable informations about the machining states. Moreover, machining states can be detected successfully using both the residual stress and AE count rate.e.

In this paper, a simple method to measure the residual stress in microstructure is presented. In order to find the residual stress in micro-machined beam, the first natural frequency of the beam that has the residual stress inside is analyzed using Rayleigh's energy method. Micro gold electroplated structure is fabricated by surface micro-machining process including electroplating. The made structure is an approximate shape of clamped-clamped beam and its 1 st natural frequency is measured by resonance method. For the better estimation of the residual stress, an equivalent length of micro-fabricated beam to ideal beam is calculated by FEM. The residual stress was estimated from the equivalent length and the measured natural frequency. It was found that a tensile stress was residue in the micro beam structure.
In this study, a method to remove residual powder on a multi-layered graphene and a new approach to transfer multi-layered graphene at once are studied. A graphene one-step transfer (GOST) method is conducted to minimize the residual powder comparison with a layer-by-layer transfer. Furthermore, a residual powder removing process is investigated to remove residual powder at the top of a multi-layered graphene. After residual powder is removed, the sheet resistance of graphene is decreased from 393 to 340 Ohm/sq in a four-layered graphene. In addition, transmittance slightly increases after residual powder is removed from the top of the multi-layered graphene. Optical and atomic-force microscopy images are used to analyze the graphene surface, and the Ra value is reduced from 5.2 to 3.7 nm following residual powder removal. Therefore, GOST and residual powder removal resolve the limited application of graphene electrodes due to residual powder.
Critical literature review in this study revealed that there can be a significant influence of the residual stress on the engineering properties of rock. The review also showed that few number of research works on the quantification of the influence was attributed to the limitation of the two classical measurement techniques, viz, X-ray diffraction and mechanical relaxation method. In this study, a new way of approach was sought based on the assumption that residual stress up to the failure. A series of hoop tests conducted onthe samples from the limb of Carboniferous Limestone in Clevedon, England, revealed that (i) there is no preferential orientations of microcracks and minerals which have been widely believed as the main source of the strength anisotropy of rock; (ii) the anisotropy of the tensile strength of the limestone results from the influence of the residual stress; (iii) since jointing commenced within the fold, residual stored strain energy has been released preferentially in the direction perpendicular to the major joints(o$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$); (ⅳ) during the hoop test making it much easier to create tensile fracture in these directons, viz 45$^{\circ}$ and 135$^{\circ}$)was released during the hoop test making it much easier to create tensile fracture in these directions, viz 45$^{\circ}$and 135$^{\circ}$;(v) the direction in which the stored strain energy may be presumed to be the least, required the greatest work to cause failure.
Epoxy-amine liquid prepolymers are extensively applied onto metallic substrates and cured to obtain painted materials or bonded joint structures. Overall performances of such systems depend on the created interphase between the organic layer and the substrate. When epoxy-amine liquid mixtures are applied onto more or less hydrated metallic oxide layer, concomitant amine chemical sorption and hydroxide dissolution appear lending to the chelate formation. As soon as the chelate concentration is higher than the solubility product, these species crystallize as sharp needles. Moreover, intrinsic and thermal residual stresses are developed within painted or bonded systems. When residual stresses are higher than the organic layer/substrate adhesion, buckling, blistering, debonding may occur leading to a catastrophic drop of system performances. Practical adhesion can be evaluated with either ultimate parameters (Fmax or Dmax) or the critical strain energy release rate, using the three point flexure test (ISO 14679-1997). We observe that, for the same system, the ultimate load decreases while residual stresses increase when the liquid/solid time increases. Ultimate loads and residual stresses depend on the metallic surface treatment. For these systems, the critical strain energy release rate which takes into account the residual stress profile and the Young's modulus gradient remains quite constant whatever the metallic surface treatment was. These variations will be discussed and correlate to the formation mechanisms of the interphase.
Recently, there has been an increased interest in the remanufacturing of mechanical parts using metal additive manufacturing processes in regards to resource recycling and carbon neutrality. DED (directed energy deposition) process can create desired metallic shapes on both even and uneven substrate via line-by-line deposition. Hence, DED process is very useful for the repair, retrofit and remanufacturing of mechanical parts with irregular damages. The objective of the current paper is to investigate the effects DED process parameters, including the effects of power and the scan speed of the laser, on deposition and residual stress characteristics for remanufacturing of mechanical parts using experiments and finite element analyses (FEAs). AISI 1045 is used as the substrate material and the feeding powder. The characteristic dimensions of the bead shape and the heat affected zone (HAZ) for different deposition conditions are obtained from the experimental results. Efficiencies of the heat flux model for different deposition conditions are estimated by the comparison of the results of FEAs with those of experiments in terms of the width and the depth of HAZ. In addition, the influence of the process parameters on residual stress distributions in the vicinity of the deposited region is investigated using the results of FEAs. Finally, a suitable deposition condition is predicted in regards to the bead formation and the residual stress.
High nickel layered oxide cathodes are gaining increasing attention for lithium-ion batteries due to their higher energy density and lower cost compared to LiCoO2. However, they suffer from the formation of residual lithium on the surface in the form of LiOH and Li2CO3 on exposure to ambient air. The residual lithium causes notorious issues, such as slurry gelation during electrode preparation and gas evolution during cell cycling. In this review, we investigate the residual lithium issues through its impact on cathode slurry instability based on deformed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as well as its formation and reduction mechanism in terms of inherently off-stoichiometric synthesis of high nickel cathodes. Additionally, new analysis method with anhydrous methanol was introduced to exclude Li+/H+ exchange effect during sample preparation with distilled water. We hope that this review would contribute to encouraging the academic efforts to consider practical aspects and mitigation in global high-energy-density lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
This study aims to determine the sunlight exposure according to depositional environment to improve the accuracy of optically simulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Sufficient sunlight exposure during transportation of sediment is a basic assumption of the OSL dating, and if the process does not occur enough, the results may be overestimated compared to the actual depositional age. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to establish a correction method by determining residual or unbleachable dose after sunlight exposure in the actual deposition process, not in the laboratory measurement. Four samples from two sites were collected according to the depositional environment from rivers and coasts, and various OSL signals, including the size of residual dose, degree of dispersion between grains, and OSL signal sensitivity, were measured. As a result, it was confirmed that sediments formed under temporarily high energy environments, such as floods and surges, had relatively high residual dose or large dispersion of residual dose between particles. In further studies, the OSL signal characteristics of river sediments by flow velocity will be identified and the relationship between energy and OSL signal characteristics will be identified in more detail. Moreover, a method of reconstructing the paleo-environment at the time of deposition for existing sediments will be devised. It is expected to provide important information for the frequency of disaster recurrence and prediction of future climate change.
