Prediction of Residual Tension of Securing Rope by Oscillation Test

  • A lot of cargo accidents occurred due to insufficient securing in the case of marine transportation. If the residual tension of securing rope can be predicted, it will be very useful in the handling of cargo securing work of operators. It was confirmed in the previous study that the fluctuation tension cf securing rope by oscillation could be predicted. In this paper, in order to the prediction of residual tension of securing rope, the experiments were carried out to measure the residual tension of securing rope under the oscillation and cyclic loadings. The residual tensions of two tests were in good agreement with each other. It can be predicted through the cyclic loading test in the estimated fluctuation tension without oscillation test by ship motion simulator.

  • Tension leveling is the process that removes the shape defects such as edge waves and center buckles, which may be formed in the rolled strip. The main purpose of tension leveling is to eliminate the differences in elongation in order to reduce the residual stresses. In this paper, a new approach for the optimization of the process conditions in tension leveling is presented. This new approach is an analytic model that predicts the residual stresses from the strip curvature. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from a finite element model.

Taper Tension Logic for Optimization of Residual Stresses in Roll-to-Roll Winding Systems (롤투롤 시스템에서 감김롤 내부 잔류응력 최소화를 위한 테이퍼 장력 설정 기법)

  • In a roll-to-roll continuous system, winding is one of the most important processes since it determines the quality of the final manufactured products such as flexible film and printed electronic devices. Since an adequate winding tension can reduce the incidence of the defects that are derived from the inner stress of the wound roll such as starring and telescoping, it is necessary to determine the optimal taper-tension profile. In this study, an algorithm for the setting of an optimal taper-tension profile in consideration of the residual stress in the wound roll is suggested; furthermore, the algorithm was adjusted for the determination of an optimal taper-tension profile regarding the winding process of $10{\mu}m$ polypropylene (PP) film. As a result of the algorithm-generated, optimal taper-tension profile, the residual stress and radial stress in a PP wound roll were decreased to 27.37 % and 40.05 % (mean value), respectively.

Redistribution of Welding Residual Stress and its Effects on Fatigue Crack Propagation (피로균열이 진전할 때 용접잔류응력의 재분포와 그 영향)

  • Redistribution of residual stress and its effects during fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region in weldment are investigated. Tests are performed by using welded CCT specimens of structual rolling steel (SS400) and it makes fatigue crack propagate from tensile residual stress region. For this study tension-tension loading type is selected by external loading condition and magnetizing stress indicator is used correctly to measure redistribution of residual stress according to fatigue crack growth and number of loading cycles. From this result, it is proved that redistribution of residual stress is mainly consist of residual stress released by fatigue crack growth. When fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region residual stress are redistributed and it makes fatigue crack growth rate largely increase. Fatigue crack growth rate is low in case of redistributed residual stress compare with initial distributed residual stress.

A Study on the Behavior Characteristics of Residual Stress of the Thin Butt Weldment by Mechanical Tensioning Method (인장법에 의한 박판 판계 용접부의 잔류 응력 거동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • For thin panel welded structure, the various welding distortions were found due to the low resistance against welding deformation. Especially, buckling distortion induced in the thin panel welded structure produce severe problems related to cost in production stage and safety in service life. So, many researches including mechanical and thermal tensioning method for preventing the occurrence of buckling distortion in the production stage have been performed. The purpose of this study is to identify the behavior of longitudinal residual stress at the SA butt weldment with thin plate of 6mm thickness under tension load by 3 dimensional FEA. For it, mesh design for 3D FEA was constructed with 20 nodes brick element for butt weldment and 8 nodes shell element for base metal. According to FEA results, the longitudinal compressive strain inducing tensile residual stress at the butt weldment decreased. It was because the compressive thermal strain in way of weldment was reduced by tension load. The control effect of residual stress increased with an increase in tension load. So, if the amount of tension load applied to the weldment exceeds 1.5 times of longitudinal shrinkage force, the amount of longitudinal residual stress decreased below the critical value inducing the buckling distortion at the SA butt weldment. Its validity was verified by experiment.

  • In this study, theoretical stress field analysis near the crack tip under tension-compression loading was performed. The results of the theoretical stress analysis were compared to the results of Finite Element Method(FEM). From this study, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip was proved after 1-cycle of tension-compression loading, and the fracture toughness and the fracture load of a structure can be decreased by the residual stress.

Analysis of Deformation and Residual Curvature of Steel Sheets in Strip Process Lines (박강판 제조공정에서의 소재 굽힘변형과 잔류만곡 발생 해석)

  • In order to analyze the deformation and residual curvature of steel sheets in the strip processing lines, a program for calculating curvature and work hardening of sheet was developed. Strip deformation caused by repeated bending under tension in the process lines was analyzed on the basis of the incremental-plasticity theory with the mixed hardenting model for the purpose of predicting the strip shape and the yield stress change. The developed calculation program was applied to predict curl and gutter of sheets within a 10% difference. The yield stress increment was also predicted with the similar accuracy. Application of the model to tension legvelling process showed that gutter could be controlled by intermesh and elongation. The yield stress increment in the electro-galvanizing line calculated by the developed program was found to be dependent on the yield strength, the applied tension and the diameter of the smallest roll.

Impact Damge and Residual Bending Strength of CFRP Composite Laminates Subjected to Impact Loading Fracture Mechanism and Impact Damage of Orthotropy Laminated Plates (충격하중을 받는 CFRP 적층판의 충격손상과 굽힘 잔류강도 직교 이방성 적층판의 충격손상과 파과메카니즘)

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the decreasing problems of residual bending strength, and the fracture machanism experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign Object Damage. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [O/sub 6//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o/]sub sym/ and four-interfaces [O/sub 3//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o//O/sub 3//sup o]/sub sym/. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the delamination area generated by impact damage is observed by using SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope). also, Thefracture surfaces obtained by three-point bending test were observed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Then, fracture mechanism was investigated based on the observed delamination area and fracture surface. The results were summarized as follows; (1) It is found that for the specimen with more interface, the critical delamination energy is increased while delamination-development energy is decreased. (2) Residual bending strength of specimen A is greater than that of Specimen B within the impact range of impact energy 1. 65J (impacted-side compression) and 1. 45J (impacted-side tension). On the other hand, when the impact energy is beyond the above ranges, residual bending strength of specimen A is smaller than that of specimen B. (3) In specimen A and B, residual strength of CFRP plates subjected to impact damage is lower in the impacted-side compression than in the impacted-side tension. (4) In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generat-ed near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.

A Proposal of Parameter Determination Method in the Residual Strength Degradation Model for the Prediction of Fatigue Life (I) (피로수명예측을 위한 잔류강도 저하모델의 파라미터 결정법 제안(I))

  • The static and fatigue tests have been carried out to verify the validity of a generalized residual strength degradation model. And a new method of parameter determination in the model is verified experimentally to account for the effect of tension-compression fatigue loading of spheroidal graphite cast iron. It is shown that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction on the statistical distribution of fatigue life by using the proposed method is very reasonable. Furthermore, it is found that the correlation between the theoretical prediction and the experimental results of fatigue life in case of tension-tension fatigue data in composite material appears to be reasonable. Therefore, the proposed method is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter than maximum likelihood method and minimization technique.

Residual stresses and viscoelastic deformation of an injection molded automotive part

  • Injection molding is one of the most common operations in polymer processing. Good quality products are usually obtained and major post-processing treatment is not required. However, residual stresses which exist in plastic parts affect the final shape and mechanical properties after ejection. Residual stresses are caused by polymer melt flow, pressure distribution, non-uniform temperature field, and density distribution. Residual stresses are predicted in this study by numerical methods using commercially available softwares, $Hypermesh^{TM},\;Moldflow^{TM}\;and\;ABAQUS^{TM}$. Cavity filling, packing, and cooling stages are simulated to predict residual stress field right after ejection by assuming an isotropic elastic solid. Thermo-viscoelastic stress analysis is carried out to predict deformation and residual stress distribution after annealing of the part. Residual stresses are measured by the hole drilling method because the automotive part selected in this study has a complex shape. Residual stress distribution predicted by the thermal stress analysis is compared with the measurement results obtained by the hole drilling method. The molded specimen has residual stress distribution in tension, compression, and tension from the surface to the center of the part. Viscoelastic deformation of the part is predicted during annealing and the deformed geometry is compared with that measured by a three dimensional scanner. The viscoelastic stress analysis with a thermal cycle will enable us to predict long term behavior of the injection molded polymeric parts.
