  • In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

  • In this paper. we propose a new video coding scheme with multi-resolution motion compensation and residual quantization. The main functional blocks of the proposed scheme include multi-level wavelet decomposition. motion estimation and motion compensation. raster scanning within each subband. formation of block trees and blocking partitioning. and adaptive arithmetic coding. Although the proposed ceding scheme is simple and requires low computational complexity, it produces bitstreams tilth good features. such as the embedded structure and SNR scalability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed coding scheme is quote competitive to and often outperforms other wavelet-based video coding schemes in the literature.

  • The emerging high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard adopts the quadtree-structured transform unit (TU) in the residual quadtree (RQT) coding. Each TU allows to be split into four equal sub-TUs recursively. The RQT coding is performed for all the possible transform depth levels to achieve the highest coding efficiency, but it requires a very high computational complexity for HEVC encoders. In order to reduce the computational complexity requested by the RQT coding, in this paper, we propose a fast TU size decision method incorporating an adaptive maximum transform depth determination (AMTD) algorithm and a full check skipping - early termination (FCS-ET) algorithm. Because the optimal transform depth level is highly content-dependent, it is not necessary to perform the RQT coding at all transform depth levels. By the AMTD algorithm, the maximum transform depth level is determined for current treeblock to skip those transform depth levels rarely used by its spatially adjacent treeblocks. Additionally, the FCS-ET algorithm is introduced to exploit the correlations of transform depth level between four sub-CUs generated by one coding unit (CU) quadtree partitioning. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed overall algorithm significantly reduces on average 21% computational complexity while maintaining almost the same rate distortion (RD) performance as the HEVC test model reference software, HM 13.0.

  • We propose a fast inter-layer mode decision method by utilizing coding information of base layer upward its enhancement layer inscalable video coding (SVC), also called MPEG-4 part 10 Advanced Video Coding Amendment 3 or H.264 Scalable Extension (SE) which is being standardized. In this paper, when the motion vectors from the base layer have zero motion (0, 0) in inter-layer motion prediction or the Integer Transform coefficients of the residual between current MB and the motion compensated MB by the predicted motion vectors from the base layer are all zero, the block mode of the corresponding block to be encoded at the enhancement layer is determined to be the $16{\times}16$ mode. In addition, if the predicted mode of the MB to be encoded at the enhancement layer is not equal to the $16{\times}16$ mode, then the rate-distortion optimization is only performed on the reduced candidated modes which are same or smaller partitioned modes. Our proposed method exhibits the complexity reduction in encoding time up to 72%. Nevertheless, it shows negligible PSNR degradation and bit rate increase up to 0.25dB and 1.73%, respectively.

  • HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) fine-tuned many existing coding tools and adopted also many new coding techniques. As a result, HEVC has accomplished about 2 times of compression efficiency enhancement compared to the existing video coding standard of H.264/AVC. One of the newly adopted tools in HEVC is the transform skip scheme which performs quantization without transform. This technique improves coding efficiency especially with computer-generated images. However, the unavailability of global or local properties of general video signals demands encoder to decide whether performing transform or not for each TU (Transform Unit). The necessity of computing rate-distortion costs for this decision is one reason to increase encoder complexity. In this paper, a fast transform skip mode decision method is proposed, which is based on the fast decision of rate-distortion cost calculation for transform skip mode, by considering frequency characteristics of residual signal. The proposed method can reduce $4{\times}4$ TU encoding time by about 27.1% with only about 0.03% consequential decrement in BDBR.

  • In this letter, an effective scanning method based on a morphological representation of quantized coefficients is proposed for intra coding in H.264. In the proposed scanning method, the scan order for each block is adaptively reconfigured by exploiting a residual correlation beyond the border of the block. An initial scan order for the current block is determined first by using the pattern of nonzero coefficients in the adjacent block. Then, a complete scan order is obtained by performing the dilation operation at each position within the initial scan order. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the coding efficiency up to 3.7% compared to the conventional zigzag scanning method.

  • Portable multi-media products which can service the highest audio-quality by using lossless audio codec has been released and the international lossless codecs, MPEG-4 audio lossless coding(ALS) and MPEG-4 scalable lossless coding(SLS), were standardized by MPEG in 2006. The simple profile of MPEG-4 ALS, it supports up to stereo, was defined by MPEG in 2009. The lossless audio codec should have low-complexity in stereo to be widely used in portable multi-media products. But the previous researches of MPEG-4 ALS have focused on an improvement of compression ratio, a complexity reduction in multi-channels coding, and a selection of linear prediction coefficients(LPCs) order. In this paper, the complexity and compression ratio of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is analyzed in simple profile of MPEG-4 ALS, the method to reduce a complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is proposed. Based on an analysis of complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder, the complexity of short-term prediction filter of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is reduced by using the low-complexity filter that is proposed in previous research to reduce the complexity of MPEG-4 ALS decoder. Also, we propose a joint coding decision method, it reduces the complexity and keeps the compression ratio of MPEG-4 ALS encoder. In proposed method, the operation of joint coding is decided based on the relation between cross-correlation of residual and compression ratio of joint coding. The performance of MPEG-4 ALS encoder that has the method and low-complexity filter is evaluated by using the MPEG-4 ALS conformance test file and normal music files. The complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is reduced by about 24% by comparing with MPEG-4 ALS reference encoder, while the compression ratio by the proposed method is comparable to MPEG-4 ALS reference encoder.

  • In this paper, we propose an object-oriented coding method in low bit-rate channels using block-based motion vectors and residual image compensation. First, we use a 2-stage algorithm for estimating motion parameters. In the first stage, coarse motion parameters are estimated by fitting block-based motion vectors and in the second stage, the estimated motion parametes are refined by the gradient method using an image reconstructed by motion vectors detected in the first stage. Local error of a 6-parameter model is compensted by blockwise motion parameter correction using residual image. Finally, model failure (MF) region is reconstructed by a fractal mapping method. Computer simulation resutls show that the proposed method gives better performance than the conventional ones in terms of th epeak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and compression ratio (CR).
