  • The effects of NOx reduction by new staged fuelling system in a small scale combustor (6.6 ㎾$_{T}$) have been investigated using propane gas flames laden with ammonia as fuel-nitrogen. The variables which had the greatest influence on NOx reduction were temperature, reducing stoichiometry( related to main combustion zone stoichiometry, air fraction and returning fuel fraction ) and residence time. The best NOx reduction was observed at the reburning zone stoichiometry of 0.85. In terms of residence time of the reburning zone, NOx reduction was effective when burnout air was injected at the Point where the reburning zone has been already established.d.

  • Experimental measurements of flame structure and soot characteristics were performed for ethene inverse diffusion flames (IDF). IDF has been considered as the excellent flow field to study the incipient soot because soot particle do not experience the oxidation process. In this study, LIF image clarified the reaction zone of IDF with OH signal and PAH distribution. laser light scattering technique also identified the being of soot particle. To address the degree of soot maturing, C/H ratio and morphology of soot sample were investigated. From these measurements, the effect of flow residence time and temperature on soot inception could be suggested, and more details on soot characteristic in the IDF was determined according to fuel dilution and flame condition. The fuel dilution results in a decrease of temperature and enhancement of residence time, but the critical dilution mole fraction is existed for temperature not to effect on soot growth. Also, the soot inception evolved on the specific temperature and its morphology are independent of the fuel dilution ratio of fuel.

  • The four-bed PSA process using a layered bed of activated carbon and zeolite 5A was studied to produce a high purity hydrogen product from SMR off-gas. At a desired product purity (99.999%+), the recovery increased with decreasing the linear velocity. However, the difference of the increasing of the recovery became smaller with the decreasing of the linear velocity and then was similar from below the linear velocity 3.9 cm/s. When the adsorbents, the feed gas composition, and the operating conditions are given, the residence time is mainly a function for design of the PSA bed size. The minimum residence time exists to obtain the maximum recovery at desired product purity.

  • In this study, we analyzed $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ removal efficiencies by a pulsed corona discharge process and investigated the effect of several process variables. The removal efficiencies of NO and $SO_2$ were measured changing the process variables of initial concentrations of NO, $H_2O$, and $NH_3$, $SO_2$, applied voltage, pulse frequency and residence time. As the applied voltage or the frequency of applied voltage or the residence time increases, the NO and $SO_2$ removal efficiencies increase. The NO and $SO_2$ removal efficiencies also increase by the addition of $O_2$ or $H_2O$, or by using the large diameter of the discharge electrode. The experimental results can be used as a basis to design the pulsed corona discharge process to remove $NO_x$, $SO_x$ and VOCs.

  • Soot particles of diesel and bunker-A with different sulfur contents were generated by pyrolysis with varying conditions of fuel flow rate and residence time in the ceramic tube at $1300^{\circ}C$. TEM and particle size analyzer were used for analysing the primary and the secondary particle size distributions. The results showed that the sulfur content in fuel influences soot inception while the fuel concentration and residence time affects the growth of incepted soot particles.

  • In this study, $CF_4$ decomposition was experimentally investigated in a high temperature flow reactor. Effects of temperature, reactant composition and concentration, and residence time on its decomposition into other stable species were analyzed. Then the results were compared to numerical results obtained using Chemkin Plug Flow Reactor model with Princeton Chemistry. As a preliminary result higher decomposition rate is obtained for higher reactor temperature and long residence time when proper reactants are supplied.

  • The effects of NOx reduction by advanced fuel staging in a small scale combustor (6.6 kWT) have been investigated using propane gas flames laden with ammonia as fuel-nitrogen. The variables which had the greatest influence on NOx reduction were temperature, reducing stoichiometry (relate to main combustion zone stoichiometry, air fraction and reburning fuel fraction) and residence time of reducing zone. NOx reduction was best at the reburning zone temperature of above 1,000 ℃ and reburning zone stoichiometry was 0.85. In terms of residence time of the reburning zone, NOx reduction was effective when burnout air was injected at the point where the reburning zone had been already established. In the advanced fuel staging NOx reduction was relatively large at the burning of higher Fuel-N concentration in the fuel. Under optimum reburning conditions, fuel nitrogen content had a relatively minor impact on reburning efficiency.

  • We consider a B/G/1 queueing with vacations, where the server closes the gate when it begins a vacation. In this system, customers arrive according to a Bernoulli process. The service time and the vacation time follow discrete distributions. We obtain the distribution of the number of customers at a random point in time, and in turn, the distribution of the residence time (queueing time + service time) for a customer. It is observed that solutions for our discret time B/G/1 gated vacation model are analogous to those for the continuous time M/G/1 gated vacation model.

  • Due to climate change, algal blooms frequently occur not only in Korea but also around the world, and the risk of toxicity of harmful algae has recently been issued. It is known that the representative harmful algae, cyanobacteria, are caused by the intersection of three factors: water temperature, residence time, and nutrients. In this study, water quality simulation was carried out using EFDC, a three-dimensional numerical model, to analyze the variations in water quality due to the decrease of residence time according to the opening of Yeongju Dam in Naeseong-Cheon. In fact, the concentration of chlorophyll-a in Yeongju Dam in the summer of 2021 was significant, exceeding the 'algae warning' for a long time based on the previous algae warning system. On the other hand, as a result of performing the simulation under the condition that the dam gate was completely opened, the concentration of chlorophyll-a was mostly reduced below the 'algae warning' level during the simulation period. It was confirmed that reducing the residence time by restoring the flow of Naeseong-Cheon is a way to immediately reduce algae in Yeongju Dam.
