  • In this study, several types of rainfall time distribution of the probabilistic rainfall amount have been applied to the Sihwa Lake, located in Gyounggi Province, Korea and their runoff characteristics, obtained by the Hec-Hms program, according to the rainfall distribution types, were compared and analysed. And then, the influences of the above rainfall distribution types of the highest water level of the reservoir, computed through the reservoir flood routing, were analysed. The tidal variation was considered, performing the flood routing and, in addition, the new program, called “IWSEA”, which can compute the reservoir water level, was developed. To conclude, when the Mononobe type of the rainfall distribution was used, the largest inflow flood discharge into the reservoir was performed and the highest reservoir water level was obtained when the Pilgrim-Cordery type of the rainfall distribution was applied.

  • Droughts can alter the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, including fish communities. This study compared the variations in fish communities in Juam reservoir before and after drought events. Fish sampling was conducted five times from April 2021 to April 2023 using three different sampling methods (kick net, cast net, and gill net). The water level in the reservoir reached its peak (103.73 EL.m, 62.2% capacity) in September 2021, before the drought, and dropped to its lowest point (88.84 EL.m, 17.6% capacity) in April 2023. The dissolved oxygen content in the reservoir decreased from 27 to 6.3 mg/L between the period with the lowest water level (April 2023) and the period with the highest water level (September 2021). In September 2021, 466 fish were collected, but after one year of drought, the number of individuals decreased to 105. Further, the number of fish collected and water levels were positively correlated. Dominant species exhibited a population decline of over 60% with decreasing water levels. These findings highlight the importance of fishery resource management during drought periods.

  • A accurate reservoir inflow is very important as providing information for decision making about the water balance and the flood control, as well as for dam safety. The methods to calculate the inflow were divided by the directed method to measure streamflow from upstream reservoirs and the indirected method to estimate using the correlation of reservoir water level and release. Currently, the inflow of multi-purpose dam is being calculated by the indirect method and the reservoir water level to calculate the storage capacity is being used by centimeters(cm) units. Corresponding to the storage volume of 1cm according to scale and water level of multi-purpose dam comes up to from several 10 thousand tons to several million tons. If it converts to inflow during 1 hour, and it comes to several hundred $m^3/sec$(CMS). Therefore, the inflow calculated on the hourly is largely deviated along the water level changes and is occurred minus value as the case. In this research, the water level gage has been developed so that it can measure a accurate water level for the improvement for the error and derivation of inflow, even though there might be various hydrology and meteorologic considerations to analyse the water balance of reservoir. Also, it is confirmed that the error and the standard derivation of data observed by the new gage is decreased by 89,6% and 1/3 & 87% and 2/3 compared to that observed by the existing gage of Daecheong and Juam multi-purpose dam.

  • This study was performed to analyze the affect of water supply capacity followed by allocating flood control volume in heightening reservoir, of which Baekgog reservoir was selected as a case study in here. Baekgog reservoir is located in Jincheon county, Chungbuk province, of which full water level will be heightened from EL. 100. 1m to EL. 102.1m, and total storage from 21.75M $m^3$ to 26.67M $m^3$. Flood inflow with 200year frequency was estimated to 997 $m^3$/s in peak flow and 22.54M $m^3$ in total volume. Reservoir flood routing was conducted to determine flood limited water levels, which was determined to have scenarios such as EL 97-98-99m in periods of 6.21.-7.20., 7.21.-8.20., and 8.21.-9.20., respectively, EL 97-97-97m, EL 98-98-98m in present reservoir, and EL 99-100-101m, EL 99-99-99m, and EL 100-100-100m in heightened reservoir. Reservoir inflow was simulated by DAWAST model. Annual paddy irrigation requirement was estimated to 33.19M $m^3$ to 2,975ha. Instream flow was allocated to 0.14mm/d from October to April. Operation rule curve was drawn using inflow, irrigation and instream flow requirements data. In case of withdrawal limit reservoir operation using operation rule curve, reduction rates of annual irrigation supply before and after flood control by reservoir were 2.0~4.3% in present size and 1.5~3.6% in heightened size. Reliability on water supply was decreased from 77.3% to 63.6~68.2% in present size and from 81.6% to 72.7~79.5% in heightened size. And reduction rates of water storage at the end of year before and after flood control by reservoir were 7.3~16.5% in present size and 7.7~16.9% in heightened size. But water supplies were done without any water deficiency through withdrawal limit reservoir operation in spite of low flood regulating water level.

  • The change of water level in reservoirs is an important factor causing failure of bank slopes, i.e. landslide. The water level of Three Gorges reservoir in China fluctuate between 145 m and 175 m, as a matter of flood control. During its normal operational state, the rate of water level fluctuation is supposed to range from 0.67 m/d to 3.0 m/d. Majiagou slope is located on the left bank of Zhaxi River, 2.1 km up from the outlet. Zhaxi River is a tributary of the Yangtze River within the Three Gorges area, of which the water level changes with the reservoir. At the back of Majiagou slope, a 20 m long and 3~10 cm wide fissure developed just after the reservoir water level rose from 95 m to 135 m in 2003. This big fissure was a full suggestion of potential failure of this slope. In this study, unsaturated-saturated seepage analyses were carried out to simulate the change of pore-water pressures in the bank slope subjected to the reservoir water level change. The obtained pore-water pressures were then used to evaluate the change in factor of safety (FS) with reservoir water level. It was found that the phreatic line showed a delayed response with respect to the change of the reservoir water level, because the seepage through soil layer was generally slower than water flows itself. During the rising and drawdown process, the phreatic lines take the shapes of concave and convex, respectively. And the fluctuation of reservoir water level just affected the front part of the bank slope, but had little influence on the back of the slope.

  • This study developed an operating rule curve (ORC) for multipurpose water supply (irrigation and environmental water) in heightened agricultural reservoir. Among the 20 reservoirs in improvement project of agricultural reservoir dam heightening, the 4 representative reservoirs (Ungyang, Gungchon, Yongam and Unam) were selected for the study according to the analysis of statistical characteristics. Available environmental water supply amounts during irrigation and non-irrigation periods, which is the range from release restricted water level to high water level were estimated by water balance analysis using reservoir operation model. Reliability, resiliency and vulnerability criteria for water system performance were used to assess the multiple water supply capacity. The ORC was presented as the percentile rank for the daily reservoir water level from the results of reservoir operation using the past couple of decades weather data. The water levels for each percentile were divided into 3 buffer sections representing drought (5~25%), normal (25~75%), and flood (75~95%) year to operate the heightened agricultural reservoir with ORC.

  • The change of rainfall pattern and hydrologic factors due to climate change increases the occurrence probability of agricultural reservoir water shortage. Water supply assessment of reservoir is usually performed current reservoir level compared to historical water levels or the simulation of reservoir operation based on the water budget analysis. Since each reservoir has the native property for watershed, irrigation district and irrigation water requirement, it is necessary to improve the assessment methods of agricultural reservoir water capability about water resources system. This study proposed a practical methods that water supply vulnerability assessment for an agricultural reservoir based on a concept of probabilistic reliability. The vulnerability assessment of water supply is calculated from probability distribution of water demand condition and water supply condition that influences on water resources management and reservoir operations. The water supply vulnerability indices are estimated to evaluate the performance of water supply on agricultural reservoir system, and thus it is recommended a more objective method to evaluate water supply reliability.

  • This study was carried out to analyze characteristics of water quality and correlation among water quality parameters in Idong reservoir used for agricultural water. The pH and concentrations of DO, SS, BOD, COD, TP, Chl-a in Idong reservoir almost met the water quality standards for agricultural water, but TN concentration exceeded the water quality standards for agricultural water. All of water quality items had no significant difference between horizontal points at 95% confidence level and the Idong reservoir was possible to be treated as the single water body. As NIP ratio of the Idong reservoir is 52, TP is a limiting nutrient salt. As TN exceeds the water quality standards, it is required to preserve TP below current state to prevent water bloom by eutrophication. Therefore, reduction of phosphorus from the watershed is necessary for controlling the eutrophication of Idong reservoir.

  • This study refers to the development of a hydrologic model simulating daily inflow and release rates for irrigation reservoirs. A daily - based model is needed for adequate operation of an irrigation reservoir sufficing the water demand for paddy fields which is closely related to meteorological conditions. And the objective or this study is to develop a Daily Irrigation Reservoir Operation Model(DIROM) combining the inflow and the release models which depicts the daily water level fluctuations of an irrigation reservoir, and to evaluate the applicability of the model. DIROM was applied to four reservoirs and daily water levels were simulated and compared to the observed data. The model behaviour was also compared with that of a ten - day based model, Reservoir Operation Study(ROS) which has been applied for determining the design capacity of reservoirs. Various combinations of measured and simulated inflow and release rates for tested reservoirs were used to define the daily water level fluctuations. Simulated release rates and measured inflow data resulted in larger errors, and simulated inflow and release rates produced the smallest errors in water level comparison. Two resevoir operation models, DIROM and ROS were applied to the same reservoir and the simulation results compared. The computational errors of DIROM ware smaller than those of ROS, and DIROM was more sensitive to meteorological conditions. DIROM demonstrated its potenial applicability in water management and operation.

  • For optimal reservoir operation during flood period, a general and systematic policy is suggested to make balance of the conflicting purposes between water conservation and flood control. The purpose of this study is to decide the restricted water level of the reservoir during flood period specially to meet water demand in non-flood period. The optimal policy is derived by reallocation of storage capacity through the application of variable restricted water level(VRWL) and minimum required water level(MRWL) for shorter intervals. This study also suggests water level dconditions to secure conservation storage capacity at the end of the flood period estimated by reservoir operation study. This paper illustrates an application of the Daecheong Dam and Chungju Dam respectively during flood and the results are reviewed.
