  • A common geoboard puzzel serves as the point of departure for an investigation that lends itself to whole-group discussion with a class of prospective secondary school teachers. Students are provided with opportunities to devise and carry out problem-solving strategies (called 'heuristics' by Polya); exploit inerrelationships among geometry, arithmetic and algebra; formulate generalizations and conjectures; plan and execute an computational project; construct mathematical arguments to establish theorems; and find counter-examples to dispose of a false conjecture.   • Nepal is one of the least urbanized countries in the world where more than 80% of the total population live in rural areas. In recent years, the rate of urbanization became rampant which ultimately accelerated immense pressure on municipal services, especially on managing the ever increasing amount of wastes. Due to lack of technology, infrastructure and financial capacity management of increasing amount of solid waste has become a major challenge in municipalities of Nepal. The indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes already affected the urban environment by creating a serious occupational health and environmental hazard to the vicinity of the dumping sites. However, there is great possibility of recovering methane from the landfill sites since the typical Nepalese municipal solid waste contains more than 65% of organic wastes. Despite having enormous potential of generating electricity from hydropower, Nepal is facing acute shortage of energy. Therefore, comprehensive scientific research and development is necessary for making solid waste to environmentally friendly by converting waste to the energy.

  • Si:Ge alloy semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer challenging opportunities for integrated optoelectronics/optoplasmonics, since they potentially allow unprecedentedly strong light-matter interaction in the wavelength range of the optical communication. In this talk, we discuss the recent research efforts of my laboratory to develop optoelectronic components based on individual group IV NCs. We present experimental demonstration of the individual NC optoelectronic devices, including broadband Si:Ge nanowire (NW) photodetectors, intra NW p-n diodes, Ge NC electrooptical modulators and near-field plasmonic NW detectors, where the unique size effects at the nanometer scales commonly manifest themselves. In particular, we demonstrated a scanning photocurrent imaging technique to investigate dynamics of photocarriers in individual Si:Ge NWs, which provides spatially and spectrally resolved local information without ensemble average. Our observations represent inherent size-effects of internal gain in semiconductor NCs, thereby provide a new insight into nano optoplasmonics.

Isocitrate dehydrogenase mutations: new opportunities for translational research

  • Over the last decade, comprehensive genome-wide sequencing studies have enabled us to find out unexpected genetic alterations of metabolism in cancer. An example is the identification of arginine missense mutations of isocitrate dehydrogenases-1 and -2 (IDH1/2) in glioma, acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chondrosarcomas, and cholangiocarcinoma. These alterations are closely associated with the production of a new stereospecific metabolite, (R)-2-hydroxyglutarate (R-2HG). A large number of follow-up studies have been performed to address the molecular mechanisms of IDH1/2 mutations underlying how these events contribute to malignant transformation. In the meanwhile, the development of selective mutant IDH1/2 chemical inhibitors is being actively pursued in the scientific community and pharmaceutical industry. The present review article briefly discusses the important findings that highlight the molecular mechanisms of IDH1/2 mutations in cancer and provides a current status for development of selective mutant IDH1/2 chemical inhibitors. Building on successful existing collaborations with the University of Arizona

  • Scientific collaborations and observational programs have been on-going between astronomers in Korea and the Steward Observatory/University of Arizona. I will present such existing collaboration models/examples between research groups or individuals and astronomers in KASI or in other institutions and universities in Korea. Building on existing collaborations we would like to further develop opportunities for future scientific collaborations and encourage scholarly exchanges between students, researchers, and faculty members in Korea and Steward Observatory/University of Arizona. In this talk I will also discuss current status of observational programs of Korean astronomers using U of A facilities (MMT and Magellan), as well as successful collaboration examples between Steward Observatory and astronomical institutions in other countries.

On The Full-Text Database Retrieval and Indexing Language

  • The recent growth of full-text database operations has brought new opportunities for subject access. The fundamental problem of subject access in the online environment is the indexing language and technology. The purpose of this paper is to identify the characteristics and capabilities of full-text retrieval as compared to traditional bibliographic retrieval. Retrieval performance of indexing languages, full-text systems features achieved so far, and the new role of a controlled vocabulary, are examined. This paper also includes a review of the research on full-text retrieval performance.

Pedagogical Functions of Teachers' Conversational Repair Strategies in the ESL Classroom

  • The present study examines various pedagogical functions of conversational repair strategies employed by the teacher in the ESL classroom. As part of interactional resources, conversational repair is defined as the treatment of trouble occurring in interactive language use and is originally designed to deal with communication problems. Research on conversational repair has focused on ordinary conversation and organization of repair practices. Studies on more pedagogical functions of repair sequences initiated by the teacher are very few. The data were from five hours of ESL structure classes in an intensive English institute at a large U.S. university. They were closely transcribed and microanalyzed following the conversation-analytic methodology. The analysis found that ESL teachers' repair techniques not only resolve communication problems but they are also designed to serve several important instructional purposes of teaching the target language. They include creating opportunities of comprehensible input, inducing modified comprehensible output from students, guiding and controlling student output, and initiating corrections by initiating repair.

Contribution of institutional shocks to Tunisian macroeconomic fluctuations: Structural VAR approach

  • Purpose: The objective of this paper is to identify and assess the contribution of budgetary, monetary and institutional shocks affecting the Tunisian economy over the period 1976-2003. The methodology used is vector autoregressive models and structural recent techniques for the analysis of time series related. The empirical results show a significant relationship between the supply shock and institutions on the one hand, and between institutional shocks and economic activity on the other hand. Research Design, Data and Methodology: As part of this section we will try to identify and assess the contribution of various shocks to macroeconomic variables' fluctuations for the Tunisian economy. The study period is: 1976-2003 and observations are annual. Results: The real business cycle theory argues that fluctuations in aggregate economic activity are the result of the interaction of the only real factors namely agents' preferences, technological opportunities, factor endowments and possibly certain institutional constraints. Conclusions: The lowest contribution to the variability of these rights is the monetary shock. As for "civil liberties", the largest share of their variability is the shock relating to the "political rights" during the first four periods .

  • There is always a risk of injury in sports. With the recent development of the economy, there have been more opportunities to be exposed to risks, and safety issues to prevent accidents have emerged as a central task. However, intensive research on trauma is lacking in the oral & maxillofacial area associated with sports. It has only been partially introduced, with a comprehensive survey of whole-body trauma or mixed with various trauma in the oral & maxillofacial area. In this paper, the overall content of trauma in the oral & maxillofacial area caused by sports activities will be reviewed for clinicians.

  • Inherent opportunities on research for restoring high resolution image from low resolution images are increasing in these days. Super resolution image reconstruction is the process of combining multiple low resolution images to form a higher resolution one. To achieve super resolution reconstruction, proper observation model which is based on subpixel shift information is required. In this context, the importance of the subpixel registration cannot be estimated because subpixel shift information cannot be obtained from original image. This paper presents a regularized adaptive super resolution reconstruction method based on phase correlated subpixel registration, where the Constrained Least Squares(CLS) Restoration is adopted as a post process.
