  • Under the competitive environment of shipping industry, the improvement of the quality of shipping service could be one of the most important factors to be considered in the recent shipping industry. However, there has been little study on the clear concept of the service quality in the shipping so far. The subject of this study is to define the concept of the service quality in the shipping by way of making investigation into the related precedent literatures studied. The quality of service is recognized in general as a degree of gap between the customer's expectation and the perception. Therefore the service quality of shipping could be measured by evaluating the gaps between shipper's expectation and performance of shipping service. If the determinants of the service quality in the shipping are proved, and the discrepancies of expectations and perception between the shipping company and the shipper could be clarified, such a result would be an useful help to establish marketing strategy.

  • Today, many companies realize that the effort to develop new products / services faster that customers want and continue to purchase is crucial for their survival. As the service sector is rapidly growing, one of the challenges faced by the service industries is the lack of effective methodologies for new service development. This paper proposes a systematic framework for developing new service concepts, with an emphasis on generating innovative, convergence-type service concepts from the customer‘s perspective. The framework consists of three phases-identification of customer needs (Phase I), extraction of new service opportunities (Phase II), and generation of new service concepts (Phase III). The proposed framework is demonstrated through a case study in the telecommunications industry. In the case study, a survey was conducted on ten customers to identify the latent customer needs; 61 new service opportunities were extracted; and 129 new service concepts were generated.

Many people are looking for something to contribute to the service industry. Although there are many research topics related to service domain that human factors and ergonomics specialists can do contribute, a few researchers are studying such topics. This paper indicated how previous researches on human factors and human errors have addressed the service domain, in order to prompt human factor study on the service domain. A variety of sources were inspected for literature reviews, including books and journals of managements, medicine, psychology, consumer behavior as well as human factor and ergonomics. The characteristics of human errors in the service domain were investigated. Human error studies in several service sectors were summarized such as medical service, automotive service operation, travel agent service and call center service. Until now, human factors community was not much interested in human errors in service domain. However, there is much space to contribute to service domain; human error identification, human error analysis and control of human error. The research of human error in service domain can provide clues to improve service quality. This paper helps to guide to identify human error of service domain and to design service systems.
