  • To examine the key success factors for long-lasting restaurants, we visited 10 restaurants with 30 or more than 30 years of tradition, located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do districts, to research these restaurant menus and customer characteristics by observation and interview. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The outstanding feature noted was that each and every restaurant had its own simple and specialized menu. We found that this feature created a virtuous circle that reinforced itself through a positive feedback loop. The simple and specialized menu increased both the cooking efficiency and food quality while it reduced both food and labor costs, this enabled the customers to eat at an affordable price and have generous servings. This lead to customer satisfaction and revisits to the restaurant, which triggered word-of-mouth referral and expansion of their customer base. This in turn created higher operating profit margins that could be reinvested in the business. The secret recipes for cooking, invented by their founders, were passed on from generation to generation. Their customer base included customers of all ages from children to senior people. And their regular customers consisted of neighboring office workers and families traveling from a long distance. We hope that our findings on long-lasting restaurants, especially of the virtuous cycle created due to the simple and specialized menus with secret recipes, will contribute to the development of Korean style long-lasting restaurant model.

Lots of activities can be easily shared daily on SNS. Differing with opinions about more activated communication on SNSs, some people have viewpoints that, in some cases, communications may be decreased among SNS users. This research is to investigate whether there may be the differences among generations in the social network age. Major concerns of study are as follows. First, there may be differences in age related to the decrease of communication activities. On the other hand, there may be differences among generations related to the increase of communication. Two research steps have been adopted that the FGI (focus group interview) was to understand. Defining actual communication status was the first step, and an empirical approach, a survey to verify hypotheses, was performed as the second step. Key findings of the study were that older generations perceived communication has been decreased. Research results can provide implications regarding characteristics of SNS communication.

As a preliminary qualitative study in this field, an ethnographic study was conducted to identify factors valued by consumers when selecting a wedding planner in the wedding planner market, which has rapidly grown in recent years. An in-depth interview was performed with eight participants in terms of wedding planner utilization type and consumers' understanding of wedding preparation with a wedding planner. The collected data were analyzed through taxonomy, component analysis and decision table analysis; for validation, professional wedding planners were asked to review the items valued by consumers in selecting a wedding planner. Four factors - expense characteristic, wedding planners, wedding consulting companies, and customer characteristics - were identified, along with eight sub-factors (capability, service attitude, technical communication, personal factors, wedding planner encounter paths, spouse's satisfaction status, and companies). Out of these, price (within budget), wedding planners' capability, wedding planners' service attitude are expected to be meaningful in further research because they were found to be attributes commonly valued by every respondent. This study is significant in that it has made a new approach to understanding wedding planner selection attributes through ethnographic research and identified new wedding planner selection attributes.

A research question was set up as follows: What is the procedure of leaning Korean for international students in Korean universities? To achieve the research purpose, this study implemented a method of semi-constructed interviews. Nineteen international students participated in the interview. The collected data for this study included transcripts from each interview. The transcripts of 60 minutes of interviews with all the participants was audio-taped recorded. This study investigated the research question based on the grounded theory. The analysis of open coding, axial-coding, and selective coding was used in the study. Results indicated that international students learned Korean in a daily basis, and then they adapted to academic Korean in their majored fields. Both personality and mother tongue influenced Korean language learning positively and negatively. International students' improvement of Korean was related in studying with Korean mass media such as TV soap dramas, talk shows, and songs. International students think that TOPIK(Test Of Proficiency In Korean) is not much related with their Korean language fluency. In conclusion, the researchers suggested to give more emphasis on academic training courses for Korean language and to improve the TOPIK in general academic Korean.

  • This study attempted to explore parents'perceptions on character and character education for their children using a focus group interview method. According to previous research, the concept of character consists of wholeness of three components: relationship, individuality, and morality. This study investigated how parents' perception differ from the widely agreed concept of character. Forty-four mothers and ten fathers participated in eleven focus group interviews. The results showed that parents recognized social relationship and self realization as two most important components of character education of children. However, the parents paid less attention on morality and wholeness. The parents conceptualized character as an alternative to academic achievement. For example, they considered self realization as an alternative to academic achievement. These tendencies could be a barrier in character education in family. Based on these findings, this study recommends that parent education should take more attention on character education in family and help parents develop a balanced understanding on the concept of character.
