In order to present the scientific information of organic emissions from consumer products available, the current study examined the emissions composition for three different types of consumer products being used in Korea in an environmental chamber: air freshener (AF), mosquito repellents (MSQR), and moth repellents (MTHR). Emission rates were evaluated by determining emission rates of the target compound from the selected products using an electropolished stainless steel (SS) test chamber $(40{\times}25{\times}50cm^3)$. A time-dependent empirical relationship developed in this study agreed well with the test results. As same with the emission concentrations, MSQR exhibited the highest emission rate for all target compounds except for limonene and naphthalene. MTHR ($9,200\;{\mu}g\;h^{-1}$) showed the highest emission rate of naphthalene followed by MSQR ($8,300\;{\mu}g\;h^{-1}$). Moreover, the concentrations in residential bedroom conditions for target compounds emitted from three types of consumer products were estimated. This estimation suggests that the uses of consumer products can elevate indoor levels of target compounds. In particular, any types of the consumer products may increase the indoor level of m, p-xylene.
The effects of water-and oil-repellent finishes on the deposition and removal of oily soils from polyseter fabrics were investigated in this study. The polyester fabrics treated with three kinds of fluoropolymers(TG-410H, TG-990) were soiled with mixed oily soils and washed by using Terg-O-Tometer at various conditions. It was found that TG-410H and TG-527 treated polyester fabrics reduced significantly the deposition of oily soils than untreated and TG-990 treated polyester fabrics. The removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was increased in porportion to increasing of surfactant concentration up to a certain point(0.2% owb) but it levelled off above the point. The removal effect was high in the order of TG-990 treated polyester fabrics > untreated polyester fabrics > TG-527 treated polyester fabrics > TBG-410H treasted polyester fabrics. Especially the removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was more effectively removed in triton X-100 solution. In general the removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics treated with fluoropolymers was increased up to a miximum near 6$0^{\circ}C$ and than decreased above 6$0^{\circ}C$. And efficient removal could be achieved within relatively short time (30min) The removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was increased in proportion to increasing of pH range up to a certain point(9.5 or 11.0) but it began to decrease above the point. Furthermore the removal of oily soils was increased with th increase of mechanical agitation, but it began to decrease above 160 rpm.
The effects of DMDHEU alone and DMDHEU/Fluorochemical(FC) combined treatment on the physical properties of 75%/25% cotton/polyester(CP) blended fabrics were investigated. FC water repellent and DMDHEU durable press finishes were applied in combination to CP fabrics to provide good water repellency as well as great durable press(DP) performance. The physical properties of the fabrics were evaluated by wrinkle recovery angle(WRA), DP performance, contact angle, demand wettability, and water repellency. The durable press/water repellent finished(DP/WR) CP fabrics show considerably improved WRA and DP performance. The DP/WR finishes do not change the water contact angie of polyester fibers significantly, while the DP finishes increase it. Both DP and DP/WR finishes increase the contact angle of cotton fibers. The water uptake amount increases in the following order : DP/WR cotton, DP/WR CP<DP cotton, DP CP < Control CP, Control cotton. The water uptake amount increases in the following order DP/WR CP, DP/WR cotton <DP cotton <DP CP<Control CP, Control cotton. Considerable improvements for water repellency are imparted to the CP fabrics treated with DP/WR, and the level of improvement is not significantly different from that of the DP/WR cotton fabrics. These results lead to the conclusion that DP/YVR treatments a single pad bath on CP are effective finishes for improving both DP performance and water repellency.
DEET, N,N'-diethyl-m-toluamide, is the most commonly used mosquito repellent. However, it can easily permeate through skin leading to toxic effects. A recent study showed that the ortho analogue of DEET showed enhanced repellency with reduced permeation compared to the commercially used meta analogue. Thus, in order to understand the differences in properties and effectiveness among the m-, o- and p-analogues of DEET, an HPLC-UV method was developed for separately analyzing the three analogues. Moreover, stability profiles at temperatures ranging from $30^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ as well as pH ranging from pH 3 to pH 9 have been determined. All three analogues were stable with no degradation observed during the 5 day period. o-DEET therefore could be further developed into a safer and more effective mosquito repellent.
Durable softening water-repellenting agent such as PODCW, PDDCW and PEDCW were prepared by blending cationized compound such as poly(octadecyl methacrylate-co-2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)[PODC], poly(2-dodecyl methacrylate-co-2-diethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate)[PDDC] and poly(2-ethylhexyl methacrylate-co-2-diethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate)[PEDC], and cationized compound of fatty carbamide, of which synthetic methods were reported in the previous paper, waxes, and emulsifiers. The results of physical tests of the P/C blended fabrics treated with PODCW, PDDCW and PEDCW with and without textile finishing resin, showed a remarkable improvement of the physical properties. The prepared water-repellenting agents, PODCW-6 and PDDCW-1, were treated on P/C blended fabrics with and without resin. For any cases, there are a little changes between initial water repellency and repellency after 3 times washing of the fabrics. Therefore, the water-repellenting agents proved to be a durable agents, and initial water $100^{+}$ and $90^{+}$ point, respectively.
Precise scientific-diagnosis for preserving stone cultural properties has been well-advanced, but research on proper methods for conservation, restoration and repair is still in early stage. Accordingly it is quite difficult to establish conservation treatment methods compatible to unique characteristics and environments of each cultural property. We tried to select most compatible conservation materials through thorough assessment of conservation materials in current use. This research is focused on conservation and restoration materials except cleaner, which are used as adhesive, filler, repellent and consolidant. Conservation treatments for stone cultural properties were first tested in 1960's and have been carried out by various methods under relevant organizations and conservation treatment companies since. We investigated present status of conservation materials being used for cultural properties. Based on these data, we will look through types and properties of the conservation materials to figure out existing problems. Among many kinds of resins, the ratio of conservation materials used in cultural properties is very low. Therefore, new conservation materials equipped with proved long-term stability should be developed as soon as possible.
We have treated polyester fabric with $CF_4,\;C_2F_6,\;SF_6\;and\;C_3F_6$ glow discharge plasmas to develop functional fabrics which preserve moisture transportation and water proofing nature. Modified properties were evaluated by water vapor permeation rate and breakthrough water pressure. The change of surface morphology was observed by SEM. Fiber interstice of the plasma treated fabric was calculated as $0.32{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and this value was sufficiently ideal as water repellent material. The moisture transportation of ${CF_4}-treated$ fabric was good as much as untreated fabric, and those of $C_2$F(sub)6-treated, SF(sub)6-treated fabrics were reduced by 1~3%, and that of ${C_3F_6}-treated$ fabric was reduced by 15%. The best treatment condition were 0.06 torr 120 seconds in $CF_4$, 0.05 torr 30 seconds in $SF_6$, 0.08~0.15 torr 90 seconds in $SF_6$ and 0.1 torr 45 seconds in $C_3F_6$ respectively. The grade of moisture transportation effect was $CF_4>C_2F_6>SF_6>>C_3F_6$, and water proofing effect was $C_2F_6{\approx}CF_4>C_3F_6>SF_6$. It was observed by SEM that the thin film was formed on the surface of the treated substrate by the fluorocarbon plasma treatment.
Decoctions of two Korean indigenous crude drugs. Radix Jingyu(the dried root of Aconitum pseudo-laeve Nakai var. erectum Nakai form. Genuinum Nakai) and Fructus ponciri (the transversely sliced and dried unripe fruit of Poncirus trifoliata Rafinesque), are being utilized by the inhabitants in certain parts of southeastern district of Korea with an empirical belief that these serve as effective insecticides for cattle ticks. Of the two species of cattle ticks so far identified in Korea, Boophilus microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosum, the former was employed in this experiment as the species occupies nearly 99 percent of the tick population. The results of the experiments herein reported seen to indicate that although the killing power of aqueous extracts of the drugs is minimal, the repellent effect against the ticks, especially of Radix Jingyu, is excellent. It may be of interest to note that the aqueous extract of Radix Jingyu has not proved to be inferior to any of the most effective cattle repellents commercially available. Further studies on these Korean indigenous crude drugs as cattle tick repellents are indicated to find whether active ingredients can be extracted in a hope to materialize an extensive application of these drugs in the field.
Recently, the protection of construction is demanded with environmental pollution. These protect modes are use of concrete admixture, coat of protective polymer and impregnate of surface with chemicals etc. The most widely used impregnation is economical and effective. The define of Impregnation for construction protect is reacted in and consolidated substrate after absorbed. The impregnation agents are Polyesters, Acrylic monomers, Epoxy and Silicone derivatives. Commonly, because the Silane has good water repellency and environmental advantages that it widely used to water proofing agents, dampproofing agents and absorption reducer for concrete of bridges. When application of Silane, it occurs pollution and harmfulness as included organic solvent. The manufactures have tired to emulsification of Silane for the reducing of the defects. The Silane emulsion is vary unstable and does not stored long periods, and it is diminished in good properties with internal reaction. In this study we tried to emulsification of Silane for effectiveness improvement and reduce pollution and hazard and discussed properties variation of emulsion. The Silane emulsions are achieved emulsifying with W/O and O/W type surfactants. It used 0.24% PVA as protective colloid and stable phase is creamy. The creamy Silane emulsion performance as the penetration depth and water absorption rate are above 4 mm and below 0.1. It stable about 6 month at room temperature.
