DNA isolation for PCR-based short tandem repeat (STR) analysis is essential to recover high yields of amplifiable DNA from low copy number (LCN) DNA samples. There are different methods developed for DNA extraction from the small bloodstain and gloves, commonly found at crime scenes. In order to obtain STR profiles from LCN DNA samples, DNA extraction protocols, namely the automated $iPrep^{TM}$$ChargeSwitch^{(R)}$ method, the automated $QIAcube^{TM}$ method, the automated $Maxwell^{(R)}$ 16 DNA $IQ^{TM}$ Resin method, and the manual $QIAamp^{(R)}$ DNA Micro Kit method, were evaluated. Extracted DNA was quantified by the $Quantifiler^{TM}$ Human DNA Quantification Kit and DNA profiled by $AmpFISTR^{(R)}$$Identifiler^{(R)}$ Kit. Results were compared based on the amount of DNA obtained and the completeness of the STR profiles produced. The automated $iPrep^{TM}$$ChargeSwitch^{(R)}$ and $QIAcube^{TM}$ methoas produced reproducible DNA of sufficient quantity and quality trom the dried blood spot. This two automated methods showed a quantity and quality comparable to those of the forensic manual standard protocols normally used in our laboratory. In our hands, the automated DNA extraction method is another obvious choice when the forensic case sample available is bloodstain. The findings of this study indicate that the manual simple modified $QIAamp^{(R)}$ DNA Micro Kit method is best method to recover high yields of amplifiable DNA from the numerous potential sources of LCN DNA samples.
In order to produce a specific bombesin antiserum far very sensitive radioimmunoassay, synthetic $[lys^3]-bombesin$ conjugated to bovine serum albumin was subcutaneously injected into guinea pigs. The conjugation was performed using either carbodiimide or gIutaraldehyde as a coupling agent. The antisera were characterized by analysis of Scatchard and Sips plots. The antiserum LBE 2G/2 raised by repeat injection of the immunogen conjugated with carbodiimide showed the titer of 1 : 188,000, very low cross-reactivity to bombesin-like peptides except bombesin, with high affinity constant $(1.64{\times}10^{11}\;M^{-1})$ and high heterogeneity index (0.91). The antiserum LBG 1G/2 produced by repeat injection of the immunogen conjugated with glutaraldehyde possessed the titer of 1 : 43,000, high cross-reactivity to some bombesin-like peptides, high affinity constant $(1.19{\times}10^{11}\;M^{-1})$ and high heterogeneity index (0.79). These results indicate that the antiserum LBE 2G/2 is specific only to bombesin and that the antiserum LBG IG/2 binds to some bombesin-like peptides such as alytesin, gastrin releasing peptide and neuromedin C. The antiserum LBE 2G/2 is sufficient for the very sensitive radioimmunoassay of bombesin.
In order to evaluate the repeatability of nutrient values estimated from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire(SFFQ) for elderly Korean, a sample of 100 participants(45 men, 55 women) were interviewed to complete a SFFQ developed by this study twice at an approximately 3 month interval. The mean age of subjects was 70.4 years. Males(mein=8.75 years) had more education thu females(1.4 years). In males, Nutrient values calculated from the repeat questionnaire were not significantly different from the baseline results by paired t test. Correlation coefficients of most nutrients ranged from 0.4-0.6. For most nutrients,60-73% males classified into the lowest tertile in baseline data belonged to the same tertile in a repeat questionnaire, but these values appeared to be less than 50% for females. These results were comparable to previously published results and confirm that repeatability of nutrient intakes estimated using SFFQs was acceptable. The repeatability of SFFQ was higher for males than females, which implies that years of schooling should be considered in the development of SFFQ for the elderly. Only f3r males, Mean Adequacy Ratio(MAR) of nutrient intake was higher for those who were less nutritionally at risk and less depressed, and physically functioned better. Considering the educational level of the Korean elderly overall, more studies on the development of simpler dietary assessment methods f3r this population are needed.(Korean J Nutrition 31(7) : 1183-1191, 1998)
E-business managers must make a profit on the goods and services they sell. But e-business retailers are still searching for strategies that work. To test current practices, we became 'phantom shoppers' and bought a randomly chosen set of CDs from a variety of E-business manager. Our findings suggest that order management and logistics skills are pivotal for selling profitably on the Website. In this article, we show how e-business managers can deploy resources creatively to attract the right shoppers, convert these shoppers into buyers, and improve the chances of repeat purchase while maintaining profit margins.

When using a higher-order modulation scheme, there are variations in bit-reliability depending on the bit position in a modulation symbol. Variations of bit-reliability in the codeword block lower the decoding performance. Also, the decoding performance increases as the sum of the bit-reliabilities in the codeword block increases. This paper presents a novel hybrid automatic repeat request scheme that increases the sum of the reliabilities of the transmitted bits by lowering the modulation order, and decreases the variations of bit-reliability in the codeword block by preferentially retransmitting bits with low reliability. The proposed scheme outperforms the constellation rearrangement scheme. Furthermore, the proposed scheme also provides a good solution in cases where the size of the retransmission block is smaller than the size of the initial transmission block.

Currently most practical vibration and structural problems in automotive suspensions require the use of the finite element method to obtain their structural responses. When the finite element model has a very large number of degrees of freedom the harmonic and dynamic analyses are computationally too expensive to repeat within a feasible design process time. To alleviate the computational difficulty, this paper presents a moment-matching based model order reduction (MOR) which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of the original finite element model and speeds up the necessary simulations with the reduced-size models. The moment-matching model reduction via the Arnoldi process is performed directly to ANSYS finite element models by software mor4ansys. Among automotive suspension components, a knuckle is taken as an example to demonstrate the advantages of this approach for vibration simulation. The frequency and transient dynamic responses by the MOR are compared with those by the mode superposition method.
Splanchnic nerve block (SNB) is performed to relieve intractable upper abdominal pain caused by carcinoma of the upper G-I tract. Not all patients achieve satisfactory pain relief; therefore, a second or third nerve block trial may need to be performed. In this study, an attempt was made to analyze the possible factors which might affect the result of repeated SNB in 42 the patients among 264 patients who received SNB at Severance Hospital during the period from January 1985 to December 1989. The results are as follows: 1) Among the 42 patients, including 30 males and 12 females, the fifties and forties were the major age groups. 2) Among the underlying diseases, stomach cancer was the most common (18 cases) and pancreatic cancer was next (14 cases). 3) The main locations of pain were the upper abdomen, epigastrium and entire abdomen in decreasing order. 4) Among the thirty-nine cases of first SNB combined with ascites, 13 cases received a repeat block, 81.0% of whom had had metastatic lesion. 5) There were 54.2% who had had single or combined treatment, operation, chemotherapy or radiotherapy before SNB. 6) Twently seven cases (64.3%) had received opioid medication for pain control. 7) In the 75% alcohol group, 11.7% of patients required a second block, and in the pure and 50% alcohol group, 9.6% of patients required a second block within two weeks of the first block. Three cases in both of these repeated block groups required a third block; representing 3.9%, of the 75% alcohol group and 1.6% of the pure and 50% alcohol group. 8) The volume of alcohol used was more than 16 ml bilaterally in both cases. 9) The points of the inserted needle were positioned in the upper and anterolateral part of the $L_1$ vertebra on both sides on the anteroposterior roentgenogram. The contrast media was spread upward along the anterior margin of the vertebral body and posteriorly in repeat block. The frequency of repeat block was higher in cases with ascites or metastasis. The instance of repeat block within 2 weeks of the first block was lower in the pure and 50% alcohol group than in the 75% alcohol group. Thus, alcohol concentration and patient status may be considered factors which influence the result of repeated SNB. We suggest early application of SNB in upper abdominal cancer patients.
Objectives Previous studies suggest that the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) gene could be an important candidate gene for schizophrenia. According to linkage studies, this gene is located on chromosome 6q14-q15, which is known to harbor the schizophrenia susceptibility locus (locus 5, SCZ5, OMIM 803175). The pharmacological agent delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (${\Delta}$-9-THC) seems to elicit the symptoms of schizophrenia. The association between CNR1 polymorphisms and schizophrenia is actively being investigated, and some studies have linked the AAT-trinucleotide repeats in CNR1 to the onset of schizophrenia. In this study, we have investigated the association between the AAT-trinucleotide repeats in CNR1 and schizophrenia by studying schizophrenia patients and healthy individuals from Korea. Methods DNA was extracted from the blood samples of 394 control subjects and 337 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition criteria). After polymerase chain reaction amplification, a logistic regression analysis, with age and gender as the covariates, was performed to study the variations in the AAT-repeat polymorphisms between the two groups. Results In total, 8 types of trinucleotide repeats were identified, each containing 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 repeats, respectively. $(AAT)_{13}$ allele was most frequently observed, with a frequency of 33.6% and 31.6% in the patient and control groups, respectively. The frequency of the other repeat alleles in the patient group (in the decreasing order) was as follows : $(AAT)_{13}$ 33.6%, $(AAT)_{14}$ 21.6%, $(AAT)_{12}$ 18.5%, and $(AAT)_{7}$ 11.1%. The frequency of the repeat alleles in the control group (in the decreasing order) was as follows : $(AAT)_{13}$ 31.6%, $(AAT)_{14}$ 24.5%, $(AAT)_{12}$ 17.2%, and $(AAT)_{7}$ 11.6%. However, there were no significant differences in the AAT-repeat polymorphisms of the CNR1 gene between the patient group and the control group. Conclusions Although our study revealed no significant association of the AAT-repeat polymorphism of the CNR1 gene with schizophrenia, it will serve as a good reference for future studies designed to examine the cannabinoid hypothesis of schizophrenia.

We developed an insider threat detection model to be used by organizations that repeat tasks at regular intervals. The model identifies the best combination of different feature selection algorithms, unsupervised learning algorithms, and standard scores. We derive a model specifically optimized for the organization by evaluating each combination in terms of accuracy, AUC (Area Under the Curve), and TPR (True Positive Rate). In order to validate this model, a four-year log was applied to the system handling sensitive information from public institutions. In the research target system, the user log was analyzed monthly based on the fact that the business process is processed at a cycle of one year, and the roles are determined for each person in charge. In order to classify the behavior of a user as abnormal, the standard scores of each organization were calculated and classified as abnormal when they exceeded certain thresholds. Using this method, we proposed an optimized model for the organization and verified it.
This paper focuses on a model order reduction (MOR) for large-scale rotordynamic systems by using finite element discretization. Typical rotor-bearing systems consist of a rotor, built-on parts, and a support system. These systems require careful consideration in their dynamic analysis modeling because they include unsymmetrical stiffness, localized nonproportional damping, and frequency-dependent gyroscopic effects. Because of this complex geometry, the finite element model under consideration may have a very large number of degrees of freedom. Thus, the repeated dynamic analyses used to investigate the critical speeds, stability, and unbalanced response are computationally very expensive to complete within a practical design cycle. In this study, we demonstrate that a Krylov subspace-based MOR via moment matching significantly speeds up the rotordynamic analyses needed to check the whirling frequencies and critical speeds of large rotor systems. This approach is very efficient, because it is possible to repeat the dynamic simulation with the help of a reduced system by changing the operating rotational speed, which can be preserved as a parameter in the process of model reduction. Two examples of rotordynamic systems show that the suggested MOR provides a significant reduction in computational cost for a Campbell diagram analysis, while maintaining accuracy comparable to that of the original systems.
