  • As the generation of renewable energy increases rapidly, the stability of the grid due to its intermittency becomes a problem. The most appropriate way to solve this problem is to combine and operate the renewable generators with the ESS(Energy Storage System). However, since the revenues of operating the ESS are less than the investment cost, many countries are implementing various incentive policies for encouraging investment of the ESS. In this paper we estimated optimal capacity of the ESS to maximize profits of renewable energy generation businesses under the incentive policy of Korea and analyzed the impact of the incentive policy on the future electric power system of Jeju island. The simulation results show that the incentive policy has significantly improved the profitability of the renewable energy businesses generation business. But the volatility of the net demand has increased as the energy stored in the ESS is discharged intensively at the time of the incentive application.

  • Due to the intermittency of renewable energy sources, a need to store and transport energy will increase. Hydrogen production through water electrolysis will provide an excellent way to supplement the intermittency of renewable energy sources. While alkaline water electrolysis is currently the most mature technology, it has drawbacks of low current density, large footprint, gas crossover, etc. The PEM water electrolysis has potential to replace the alkaline electrolysis. However, expensive catalyst material used in the PEM electrolysis has been the bottleneck of widespread use. In this review, we have reviewed recent efforts to reduce catalyst loading in PEM water electrolysis. In core-shell nanostructures, the precious metal catalyst forms a shell while heteroatoms form a core. In this way, the catalyst loading can be significantly reduced while maintaining the catalytic activity. In another approach, a corrosion-resistant support is utilized, which provides a stable platform to impregnate precious metal catalyst.

  • Recently, renewable energy-related power generation facilities have been surging due to the government's "Renewable Energy 3020", "Green New Deal", "2050 Carbon Neutrality" and "K-RE100" policies. Most renewable energy facilities are small and distributed, making it difficult to manage efficiently, and small distributed resources less than 1MW are having a hard time with participating in the market due to the limited sales and avoidance of trading. In particular, the intermittency of renewable energy has a significant impact on the stability of the power grid. The government is seeking to address volatility and intermittency issues through 'small distributed resource brokerage trading, and to expand the systematic resourceization and acceptability of heterogeneous large and small distributed resources. In this work, we intend to apply an AI-based power generation prediction model to a distributed resource brokerage trading system so that it can be utilized as a foundation platform for pioneering new energy business markets.

  • Although renewable power is regarded a way to active response to climate change, the stability of whole power system could be a serious problem in the future due to its uncertainties such as indispatchableness and intermittency. From this perspective, the peak time impact of stochastic wind power generation is estimated using simulation method up to year 2030 based on the 3rd master plan for the promotion of new and renewable energy on peak time. Result shows that the highest probability of wind power impact on peak time power supply could be up to 4.41% in 2030. The impact of wind power generation on overall power mix is also analyzed up to 2030 using SCM model. The impact seems smaller than expectation, however, the estimated investment cost to make up such lack of power generation in terms of LNG power generation facilities is shown to be a significant burden to existing power companies.

  • With the appearance of the climate change concerns, energy transition to renewable energy is accelerating over the world. Korea, a latecomer to the renewable energy sector, has also been unable to avoid energy transition. The government is promoting strong goals for expansion of renewable energy. However, switching from stable and controllable conventional generation to intermittent and uncontrollable renewable generation will be a big challenge for the electric power industry. Korea Power Exchange(KPX), which is responsible for the planning and operation of the electric power industry in Korea, is trying to improve measures in various fields such as the implementation of real-time unit commitment and additional real-time markets in order to cope with the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy.

  • According to the Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan announced in 2017 by the South Korean government, the electricity share of renewable energy will be expanded to 20% of the total electricity generation by 2030. Given the intermittency of electricity generation from renewable energy, realization of such a plan presents challenges to managing South Korea's isolated national electric grid and implies potentially large excess electricity generation in certain situations. The purpose of this study is: 1) to develop a model to accurately simulate the effects of excess electricity generation from renewables which would arise during the transition, and 2) to propose strategies to manage excess electricity generation through effective utilization of domestic electricity generating capabilities. Our results show that in periods of greater PV and wind power, namely the spring and fall seasons, the frequency of excess electricity generation increases, while electricity demand decreases. This being the case, flexible operation of coal and nuclear power plants along with LNG and pumped-storage hydroelectricity can be used to counterbalance the excess electricity generation from renewables. In addition, nuclear energy plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions and electricity costs unlike the fossil fuel-based generation sources outlined in the 8th Basic Plan.

  • With the advent of cutting-edge technology, renewable energy is significantly considered as alternative resources to supply electric power. However, many barriers such as energy intermittency, high initial installation cost, and low-efficiency generation challenged building new infrastructure with clean energy. Efforts reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels resulted in the decentralization of power generation like distributed energy resource (DER). This paper is to introduce and evaluate the feasibility of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) in a high-rise building in Ulsan. To optimize BIPV, a variety of methods to minimize efficiency decrease and maximize electric power generation after installing BIPV on the building's facade are suggested. The variables causing power losses are analyzed. By utilizing System Advisor Model (SAM), actual power generated from solar panels is measured by Thin-film PV, Mono-crystalline PV, and Poly-crystalline PV.

  • A sustainability of electricity supply has emerged as a critical issue for low carbon green growth in South Korea. Wind power is the fastest growing source of renewable energy. However, due to its own intermittency and volatility, the power supply generated from wind energy has variability in nature. Hence, accurate forecasting of wind speed and power plays a key role in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. This paper presents a short-term wind speed prediction method based on support vector regression. Moreover, particle swarm optimization is adopted to find an optimum setting of hyper-parameters in support vector regression. An illustration is given by real-world data and the effect of model regularization by particle swarm optimization is discussed as well.
