  • Purpose: This study measures the effect of Information Technology (IT) on both cost and profit efficiency of State-owned Commercial Banks (SOCBs) in Bangladesh. Research design, data and methodology: Yearly Non-IT and IT data are collected from the annual report of SOCBs of Bangladesh from 2008 to 2017. Variable Return to Scale (VRS) cost Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Profit DEA are employed to measure the efficiency of SOCBs and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) is used to investigate the impacts of ICT components on operating cost and profit efficiency for SOCBs. Results: The average cost efficiency (74.4%) was noticed higher than the average profit efficiency (20.6%) for SOCBs. SOCBs were more affordable and less profitable for both cost and profit efficiency. Rupali bank was the most cost efficient while Sonali bank was the most profit efficient. IT Investment and IT personnel expenses were positively significant for cost efficiency. IT income, IT personnel, IT personnel expenses, ATM expenses, and Credit card expenses were negatively significant for profit efficiency. Conclusion: The further studies can combine DEA with machine learning algorithms to study the impact of IT on banks' performances. The results could aid government to remove the hindrance of progress in Bangladesh.

  • Pistia stratiotes(Water Lettuce) can be applied to remove inorganic pollutants from the wastewater for the advanced treatment. This study attempts to remove heavy metals from the secondary treated wastewater. Three different initial concentrations of heavy metals were applied as 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/L for Lead(Pb) and Chromium(Cr(VI)). In addition, the removal efficiency for the mixture of Lead and Chromium was also observed. The removal efficiency of Pb was in the range of 41.0~72.0% for Pb and it was in the range of 25.0~30.0% for Cr(VI) by Pistia stratiotes. The plants placed in static systems were able to remove the heavy metals in a few days of exposure. However, it was observed that the heavy metals affected produce phytotoxic effects on plants resulting in inhibition of chlorophyl synthesis, decrease in biomass production, and finally plant necrosis. The removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr(VI) by Pistia stratiotes were increased with plant growth.

  • This paper reports on the experimental investigation carried out to evaluate the physical optimal conditions in the absorption column to remove odorous hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas, as a highly undesirable contaminant, is most widely emitted from environmental treatment facilities. The absorbent mixed with natural second metabolites extracted from conifer trees and chemical absorbent of 2-aminoethanol was applied to remove it via chemical neutralization. The absorbent of natural second metabolites was achieved by a removal efficiency of 20-40% by itself depending on the treatment conditions, but the complex absorbent mixed with 0.1% amine chemical provides the removal efficiency of 98%. The optimal removal efficiencies have been examined against the two major parameters of temperature and pH. This study shows that the aqueous solution by natural second metabolites can be used as an appropriate absorbent in the column absorbed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide gas.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain the optimal conditions to remove hydrogen fluoride (HF) generated from a variety of F-gas treatment processes. First, we selected $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ as a reactant among the various alkali salts which have a high removal efficiency and a competitive price by forming a calcium fluoride precipitate. Additionally, various factors were investigated to improve the removal efficiency of HF. The conditions such as the settling time, agitating time and intensity, reaction temperature, and pH were considered as main factors. As a result, in the treatment process to remove HF through Ca-based alkali salts, the optimal conditions were a 120 min settling time, 30 min of agitation at 100 rpm, a pH of 4-8, and a reaction temperature of $40^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, lots of methods have been studing to utilize energy and decrease contaminated effluents. There has been great progress on IGCC (Integrated gasification combined cycle) to reduce thermal energy losses. The following results have been conducted from desulfurization experiments using waste shell to remove H$_2$S. Fixed bed desulfurization experiments, to obtain basic data for scale-up was indicated. Oyster was the best among the various sorbents, like the results of TGA. Especially, H$_2$S removal efficiency of uncalcined oyster was the highest. When use oyster as desulfurization sorbents, calcination process was not needed. Thus, high desulfurization efficiency would be expected. Fixed bed reactor experiments were indicated particle size of sorbents. These had influenced on desulfurization capacity. As smaller particle size was found better desulfurization capacity. Large capacity difference was found between 0.613 mm and 0.335 mm. But, differences between 0.335 mm and 0.241 mm was relatively small. As bed temperature increased, H$_2$S removal capacity increased. Therefore, both particle size and bed temperature should be considered to remove H$_2$S by sorbents.

  • Dyeing wastewater contains recalcitrant organics which can not be easily treated by conventional biological treatment. Therefore it has to be treated by other advanced oxidation process in order to remove COD and Color more efficiently. Fenton oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes in removal of COD and color for the dyeing wastewater. However it increase the treatment cost and the production of sludge by the use of the excessive chemical reagent. Ozonation is not suitable in Single treatment process because it is not effective in organics removal compared with Color removal. The purpose of this research in order to evaluate the comparable removal efficiency of COD and color by the combination of advanced oxidation processes for the dyeing wastewater. The sequential treatment processes of Fenton process and ozonation was more effective to remove organics and color than ozonation and Fenton process. The result of Fenton process for the pretreatment presented as the 81% removal of organics whereas ozonation process for the pretreatent presented as the 22.1% removal of organics. The removal of colour was higher as 81.3% for the ozonation as the pretreatment than 77.7% for the Fenton process as the pretreatment.

  • Magnetic multi-granule nanoclusters (MGNCs) were investigated as an inexpensive means to effectively remove arsenic from aqueous environment, particularly groundwater sources consumed by humans. Various size MGNCs were examined to determine both their capacity and efficiency for arsenic adsorption for different initial arsenic concentrations. The MGNCs showed highly efficient arsenic adsorption characteristics, thereby meeting the allowable safety limit of $10{\mu}g/L$ (ppb), prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and confirming that 0.4 g and 0.6 g of MGNCs were sufficient to remove 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L of arsenate ($AsO_4{^{3-}}$) from water, respectively. Adsorption isotherm models for the MGNCs were used to estimate the adsorption parameters. They showed similar parameters for both the Langmuir and Sips models, confirming that the adsorption process in this work was active at a region of low arsenic concentration. The actual efficiency of arsenate removal was then tested against 1 L of artificial arsenic-contaminated groundwater with an arsenic concentration of 0.6 mg/L in the presence of competing ions. In this case, only 1.0 g of 100 nm MGNCs was sufficient to reduce the arsenic concentrations to below the WHO permissible safety limit for drinking water, without adjusting the pH or temperature, which is highly advantageous for practical field applications.

  • In order to remove the heavy metals from synthetic wastewater containing Pb, Cr, and Cd, the experiment was conducted with a variety of concentration and pH by using the washed and dried coffee grounds as adsorbent. Almost of the heavy metals were removed in thirty minutes and the removal efficiency was maximized to the 80 percents following the different pH conditions. Furthermore, in the case of Cr, the removal efficiency was declined with the increasing of pH. As a result of this study, coffee grounds is proved to be a very good adsorbent to remove the heavy metals.

  • In recent years, researchers have put a considerable effort to decrease the emission of harmful gaseous pollutants to the atmosphere. In order to remove simultaneously $SO_2$ and $NO_X$ from the flue gas of small and medium-sized ship, we designed minimal wet scrubber inside a compact multistage modular system. In this study we proceed experiment of elemental technology at each stage of the scrubber. The each stage is oxidation of NO which is the main component of $NO_X$, and removal of $SO_2$, respectively. $NaClO_2$ was used to oxidize NO gas, and NaOH was used to remove $SO_2$ gas. The maximum NO conversion efficiency and the $SO_2$ removal efficiency are both indicate 100%.

  • Catalyst-assisted plasma system with a DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor was used to remove hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the odorous species in this study. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts impregnated by Ag, Cu and Mn species were employed as catalysts and their $H_2S$ removal characteristics under plasma irradiation were investigated. From the experimental study, we found that the $H_2S$ removal efficiency increases with decreasing space velocity in the system and increasing specific input energy. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts are efficient to remove $H_2S$ than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts. Especially, the catalysts impregnated by Ag have higher removal efficiency than other catalysts (Cu, Mn).
