  • This study was carried to investigate the biodegradability of phenol in the wastewater with the two sludge blanket-packed bed reactor in series. Each reactor had a dimension of 0.09 m i.d. and 1.5 m height and consisted of two regions. The lower region was a sludge blanket of 0.5 m height and the upper region was a packed-bed of 1 m height. The packed bed region was charged with ceramic raschig rings of 10 mm i.d., 15 mm o.d. and 20 mm length. The reactors were operated at 35$\circ$C and the hydraulic retention time(HRT) was maintained 24 hours. The synthetic wastewater composed of glucose and phenol as major components was fed into the reactor in a continuous mode with incereasing phenol concentration. In addition, the nutrient trace metals($Na^+, Mg^{2+}, Ca^{2+}, PO_4^{3-}, NH_4^+, Co^{2+}, Fe^{2+}$ etc.) were added for growing anaerobes. The phenol concentration of the effluent, the overall gas production, the composition of product gas, the efficiency of COD reduction and the duration of acclimation period were measured to determine the performance of the anaerobic wastewater treatment system as the phenol concentration of the influent was increased from 600 to 2400 mg//l. Successfully stable biodegradation of phenol could be achieved with the anaerobic treatment system from 600 to 1, 800 mg/l of the influent phenol concentration. The upper level of influent phenol loading was high enough to meet most of the practical requirement. The duration of acclimation increased with the phenol loading. At steady state of the influent phenol concentration of 1800 mg/l, the treatment performance indicated the phenol reduction efficiency of 99%, the COD reduction efficiency of 99% and the gas production rate of 37 l/day. At the influent phenol concentration of 2400 mg/l, however, the operation of the treatment system was noted unstable. While the concentration of methane in biogas decreased with increasing the influent phenol loading, the carbon dioxide was increased. However, the concentration of hydrogen was varied negligibly. The concentration of methane was high enough to be used as a fuel. As a result, it is suggested that anaerobic phenol wastewater treament was economical in the sense of energy recovery and wastewater treatment.

  • Removal of phenanthrene by electrokinetic method combined with Fenton-like process was studied in a model system. The scale of reactor was 100cm in length, 100cm in width, and 70cm in height. The distance between electrodes was 70cm. Indonesia kaoline was selected as a model soil. When constant voltage of 100 V was applied to this system, current decreased from 200 mA to 100 mA for 14 days. Total accumulated EOF was about 55,000 mL. The concentration of phenanthrene near anode was very low because direction of electroosmosis was from anode to cathode and hydrogen peroxide was supplied to anode reservoir. Phenanthrene concentration was increased as the location was far from anode because hydrogen peroxide was gradually decomposed and then the rate of hydroxyl radical production was decreased.

  • The biological nutrient removal from domestic wastewater with low C/N ratio is difficult. Therefore, this study was performed to examine effect of operational parameters such as air supply, hydraulic retention time, pH on the nitrogen removal by ammonia stripping and to increase influent C/N ratio without required carbon source. The ammonia stripping system used for the bench-scale experiment in laboratory had a dimension of 15 cm diameter and 150 cm height. The ammonia stripping reactors were classified into two types, type AS I and type AS II, according to there using or not media. Results of the research showed that the T-N removal efficiency of AS I using plastic media is slightly higher than AS II without media. In experimental condition of air supply 30 L/min and pH 12.5, T-N removal efficiencies increased as HRT of ammonia stripping reactor became longer from 8 hr to 36 hr. In experimental condition of HRT 36 hr, it was also found that the T-N removal efficiencies improved through increase of air supply. On the other hand, C/N ratio of wastewater was increased from average 3.9 to 5.4 by ammonia stripping.

  • The method of the Laplace transform has been used to obtain an analytical solution of the three-dimensional steady state advection diffusion equation for the airborne radionuclide release from any nuclear installation such as the power reactor in an area source. The present treatment takes into account the removal of the pollutants through the nuclear reaction. We assume that the pollutants are emitted as a constant rate from the area source. This physical consideration is achieved by assuming that the vertical eddy diffusivity coefficient should be a constant. The prevailing wind speed is a constant in 𝑥- direction and a linear function of the vertical height z. The present model calculations are compared with the other models and the available data of the atmospheric dispersion experiments that were carried out in the nuclear power plant of Angra dos Reis (Brazil). The results show that the present treatment performs well as the analytical dispersion model and there is a good agreement between the values computed by our model and the observed data.

  • This paper reports experimental results, demonstrating the feasibility of horseradish peroxidase(HRP) and H$_2$O$_2$ to reduce phenol transport in saturated porous media. A laboratory-scale packed column reactor(ID: 4.1 cm, sand-bed height 12 cm) column was utilized to simulate injection of HRP and H$_2$O$_2$ into an aquifer contaminated with phenol. Effluent concentrations of phenol and polymerization products were monitored before and after enzyme addition under various experimental conditions(enzyme dose: 0$\sim$2 AU/mL, [ionic strength]: 5$\sim$100 mM, pH: 5$\sim$9). The concentration of phenol in the column effluent was found to decrease by nearly 90% in the presence of HRP(2 AU/mL) and H$_2$O$_2$ in the continuous flow system at pH 7 and ionic strength 20 mM. The influent phenol was converted in the system to insoluble precipitate, which deposited in pore spaces. The remains were discharged as soluble oligomers. About 8% of total pore volume in column system was decreased by deposition of polymer produced.
