PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare removal torques and surface topography between laser treated and sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) treated implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Laser-treated implants (experimental group) and SLA-treated implants (control group) 8 mm in length and 3.4 mm in diameter were inserted into both sides of the tibiae of 12 rabbits. Surface analysis was accomplished using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM; Hitachi S-4800; Japan) under ${\times}25$, ${\times}150$ and ${\times}1,000$ magnification. Surface components were analyzed using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Rabbits were sacrificed after a 6-week healing period. The removal torque was measured using the MGT-12 digital torque meter (Mark-10 Co., Copiague, NY, USA). RESULTS. In the experimental group, the surface analysis showed uniform porous structures under ${\times}25$, ${\times}150$ and ${\times}1,000$ magnification. Pore sizes in the experimental group were 20-40 mm and consisted of numerous small pores, whereas pore sizes in the control group were 0.5-2.0 mm. EDS analysis showed no significant difference between the two groups. The mean removal torque in the laser-treated and the SLA-treated implant groups were 79.4 Ncm (SD = 20.4; range 34.6-104.3 Ncm) and 52.7 Ncm (SD = 17.2; range 18.7-73.8 Ncm), respectively. The removal torque in the laser-treated surface implant group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P=.004). CONCLUSION. In this study, removal torque values were significantly higher for laser-treated surface implants than for SLA-treated surface implants.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. A number of studies about the nano-treated surfaces of implants have been conducting along with micro-treated surfaces of implants. PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to get information for the clinical use of nano-treated surfaces compared with micro-treated surfaces by measuring removal torque and analyzing histological characteristics after the placement of various surface-treated implants on femurs of dogs. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Machined surface implants were used as a control group. 4 nano-treated surface implants and 3 micro-treated surface implants [resorbable blast media surface (RBM), sandblast and acid-etched surface (SAE), anodized RBM surface] were used as experimental groups. Removal torque values of implants were measured respectively and the histological analyses were conducted on both 4weeks and 8weeks after implant surgery. The surfaces of removed implants after measuring removal torque values were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 8 weeks. RESULTS. 1. Removal torque values of the nano-treated groups were lower than those of micro-treated groups. 2. Removal torque values were similar in the anodized RBM surface groups. 3. On the histological views, there was much of bone formation at 8 weeks, but there was no difference between 4 and 8 weeks, and between the types of implant surfaces as well. CONCLUSION. it is suggested that implant topography is more effective in removal torque test than surface chemistry. To get better clinical result, further studies should be fulfilled on the combined effect of surface topography and chemistry for the implant surface treatments.

Statement of problem. The use of small diameter implants having less than 3 mm in diameter were restricted because of lack of bonding strength to bone. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to observe how much resorbable blast media pin implants increase the binding force to the bone compared to machined transitional pin implants by measuring removal torque, and whether they can be used as final implants for replacement of small diameter teeth. Material and method. Fifteen rabbits were used in this study. Two kinds of implants (resorbable blast media pin implants and machined transitional pin implants) were inserted in each tibia bicortically. After healing time of 2, 4 and 8 weeks, the removal torque values were recorded and the rabbits were sacrificed for histological analysis. Linear finite element method analyses were conducted to compare bicortical fixation with monocortical fixation. Result and conclusion. Within the limitation of this in vivo study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The removal torque value of RBM pin implants showed statistically significant increase compared to machined pin implants at 2, 4, and 8 weeks respectively (p<0.05). 2) The removal torque value of RBM pin implants at 2, 4, and 8 weeks was increased statistically significantly with time (p<0.05). 3) Bicortical fixation showed better stress distribution compared with monocortical fixation in a linear finite element method analysis. 4) RBM pin implants are not recommended as transitional implants because they showed a lot of bone fracture in histologic specimens.
Background: In the osseointegration of dental implants, the implant surface properties have been reported to be some of the most important critical factors. The effect of implant's surfaces created by resorbable blast media (RBM) followed by laser ablation on bone tissue reactions was examined using the removal torque test and histomorphometric analysis. Methods: Two types of dental implants, RBM-laser implants (experimental group) and RBM implants (control group) (CSM implant system, Daegu, Korea; L=6 mm, diameter=3.75 mm) were placed into the right and left distal femoral metaphysis of 17 adult rabbits. Six weeks after placement, removal torque was measured and histomorphometric analysis was performed. Results: The mean removal torque was $24.0{\pm}10.2Ncm$ and $46.6{\pm}16.4Ncm$ for the control and test specimens, respectively. The experimental RBM-laser implants had significantly higher removal torque values than the control RBM implants (p=0.013). The mean values of total and cortical bone to implant contact (BIC) were respectively $46.3{\pm}10.8%$ and $65.3{\pm}12.5%$ for the experimental group, and $41.9{\pm}18.5%$ and $57.6{\pm}10.6%$ for the control group. The experimental RBM-laser implants showed a higher degree of total and cortical BIC compared with RBM implants, but there was no statistical significance (p=0.482, 0.225). Conclusion: The removal torque and BIC of the test group were higher than those of the control group. In this study, the surface treatment created by RBM treatment followed by laser ablation appears to have a potential in improving bone tissue reactions of dental implants.
Statement of problem. Osseointegration is important mechanism of dental implant but it is not easy to evaluate. Indirect measurement is non-invasive and clinically applicable but they need more study about correlation between indirect values and degree of osseointegration. Purpose. The aims of this study were to evaluate the coefficient of correlation between indirect measurement and direct measurement under different healing time, and assessment of effect of initial insertion torque to the implant stability. Material and Methods. 20 rabbits received 3 implants on each side of tibia. Three kinds of implants (machined surface implant, Sandblasted with Large grit and Acid etched implant, Resorbable Blast Media treated implant) were used. During the surgery implant insertion torque were measured with $Osseocare^{TM}$. After the 1, 4, 8, 12 weeks of healing time, animals were sacrificed and stability values (Implant Stability Quotient with $Osstell^{TM}$, removal torque with torque gauge) were measured. Results. The Bone quality of rabbit tibia was classified into 2 groups according to the insertion torque. Resonance frequency analysis (ISQ) and removal torque showed positive correlation until $4^{th}$ week (r=0.555, p=0.040). After $8^{th}$ week (r=0.011, p=0.970) the correlation became weak and it turned negative at $12^{th}$ week (r=-0.074, p=0.801). Insertion torque and ISQ showed changing correlation upon the healing time ($1^{st}$ week: r=0.301, p=0.033, $4^{th}$ week: r=-0.429, p=0.018, $8^{th}$ week: r=0.032, p=0.865, $12^{th}$ week: r=-0.398, p=0.029). Insertion torque and removal torque has positive correlation but it was not statistically significant ($1^{st}$ week: r=0.410, p=0.129, $4^{th}$ week: r=0.156, p=0.578, $8^{th}$ week: r=0.236, p=0.398, $12^{th}$ week: r=0.260, p=0.350). Conclusion. In this study, bone quality may affect the degree of osseointegration positively during healing time and correlation between ISQ and degree of osseointegration can be different according to the healing time and bone quality.
Statement of problem : The survival rate of wide diameter implants was lower than of 3.75-mm implants in some clinical researches. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of implant diameter on the osseointegration of implants in the rabbit femoral condyle and tibial metaphyses by means of removal torque measurements and histomorphometric analysis. Material and Method : Ten adult New Zealand White rabbits were used in this study Two 3.75-mm diameter implants were inserted through one cortical layer in the tibial metaphyses and one 3.75-mm diameter implant was inserted in the femoral condyle. 5.0-mm diameter implants were inserted in the other leg in the same manner. A total of 60 implants (3.75-mm diameter implants:30 : 5.0-mm diameter implants:30) were installed. After a healing time of 4 and 12 weeks, the peak removal torque values required to shear off the implants were recorded. From the removal torque values (Ncm) obtained, the mean shear stress ($N/mm^2$) was calculated. And the percentage of direct bone-to-implant contact and the percentage of bone area inside the thread were measured by Kappa Image Base-metreo. The Student's t-test was undertaken for statistical analysis (p<0.05). Results : The removal torque value of 5.0-mm diameter implants was higher than of 3.75-mm diameter implants (p<0.05). The difference of shear stress value between 3.75-mm and 5.0-mm diameter implants was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The percentage direct bone-to-implant contact had no statistical difference between two groups (p>0.05). The percentage of bone area inside the thread had no statistical difference between two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion It is concluded that the quality f osseointegration is not influenced by increasing implant diameter.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of microthreads on removal torque and bone-to-implant contact (BIC). Methods: Twelve miniature pigs for each experiment, a total of 24 animals, were used. In the removal torque analysis, each animal received 2 types of implants in each tibia, which were treated with sandblasting and acid etching but with or without microthreads at the marginal portion. The animals were sacrificed after 4, 8, or 12 weeks of healing. Each subgroup consisted of 4 animals, and the tibias were extracted and removal torque was measured. In the BIC analysis, each animal received 3 types of implants. Two types of implants were used for the removal torque test and another type of implant served as the control. The BIC experiment was conducted in the mandible of the animals. The $P_1-M_1$ teeth were extracted, and after a 4-month healing period, 3 each of the 2 types of implants were placed, with one type on each side of the mandible, for a total of 6 implants per animal. The animals were sacrificed after a 2-, 4-, or 8-week healing period. Each subgroup consisted of 4 animals. The mandibles were extracted, specimens were processed, and BIC was analyzed. Results: No significant difference in removal torque value or BIC was found between implants with and without microthreads. The removal torque value increased between 4 and 8 weeks of healing for both types of implants, but there was no significant difference between 8 and 12 weeks. The percentage of BIC increased between 2 and 4 weeks for all types of implants, but there was no significant difference between 4 and 8 weeks. Conclusions: The existence of microthreads was not a significant factor in mechanical and histological stability.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) abutment and prefabricated abutment in Morse taper internal connection type implants after cyclic loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study was conducted with internal type implants of two different manufacturers (Group Os, De). Fourteen assemblies were prepared for each manufacturer group and divided into 2 groups (n=7): prefabricated abutments (Os-P, De-P) and CAD/CAM abutments (Os-C, De-C). The amount of axial displacement and the removal torque values (RTVs) were measured before and after cyclic loading (106 cycles, 3 Hz with 150 N), and the tensile removal force to dislodge the abutments was measured after cyclic loading. A repeated measures ANOVA and a pattern analysis based on the logarithmic regression model were conducted to evaluate the effect of cyclic loading on the axial displacement. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Mann-Whitney test was conducted for comparison of RTV reduction% and tensile removal forces. RESULTS. There was no significant difference between CAD/CAM abutments and prefabricated abutments in axial displacement and tensile removal force; however, significantly greater RTV reduction% after cyclic loading was observed in CAD/CAM abutments. The correlation among the axial displacement, the RTV, and the tensile removal force was not significant. CONCLUSION. The use of CAD/CAM abutment did not significantly affect the amount of axial displacement and tensile removal force, but presented a significantly greater removal torque reduction% than prefabricated abutments. The connection stability due to the friction at the abutment-implant interface of CAD/CAM abutments may not be different from prefabricated abutment.
Statement of problem: Surface texture of the implant is one of the important factors of the implant success, especially in the immediate implant loading. Many methods of the surface treatment of implant have developed and introduced. Purpose : This study was to evaluate the effects of the Ca-P coating implant crystallized the hydroxyapatite on the surface by the removal torque test and the histomorphometric analysis in vivo. Material and methods: 135 screw type implants, 4.0mm in length and 3.75mm in diameter were used in this study. Implants were divided into 3 groups and treated in the different mothods. Group I was not treated, Group II was treated in the SLA method, and Group III was treated in the Ca-P coating with the anodizing method and the hydroxyapatite was crystallized on the surface with the hydrothermal treatment. Firstly, the surface roughness of each group was measured, 45 rabbits were used in this experiment. Two implants were inserted on right tibial metaphysis and one implant was inserted on left side with the alternating order. After the healing periods of 3, 5, and 12 weeks, the rabbits were sacrificed to evaluate the osseointergration by the removal torque test and the histomorphometric analysis. Results : 1. In the analysis for the surface roughness, Group II showed the highest roughness. And Group III showed higher secondly. There was a significant difference one another statistically 2. In the removal torque test, Group III and II were significantly higher than Group I. There was no statistical difference between Group III and Group II. 3. For all Groups, the removal torque values at 12th week were significantly higher than at 3rd and 5th week. 4. In histomorphometric analysis, the bone implant contact rates of Group III and II were higher than that of Group I at 3rd and 5th week. There was a significant difference at 5th week. 5. In histomorphometric analysis, the bone implant contact rate of Group III and II increased from 3rd week to 5th week, but decreased at 12th week. In Group I, the contact rate at 12th week was significantly higher than at 3rd week and 5th week.

Platelet-rich plasma(PRP) has been known to increase the rate and degree of bone formation by virtue of growth factors in concentrated platelets. Although its great healing effect on bone defect or pre-implantation site preparation in conjunction with bone substitute has been reported, the effect associated with implant is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of PRP on rapid osseointegration of endosseous dental implants in the rabbit tibiae. Twenty two adult female New Zealand white rabbits, weighing approximately 2.7-3.3kg, were used for this study. Twelve of the 22 animals were used for histomorphometric analysis and ten of the 22 were for removal torque test. Each animal received two implants in each tibia (two treated with PRP and two as control) and was given fluorochrome intramuscularly. For histomorphometric analysis, rabbits were divided into four groups according to the healing period. At 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively, each three animals were sacrificed serially and the amount and rate of bone formation around dental implant were examined on the undecalcified sections under fluorescent microscope, polarized microscope and light microscope connected to a personal computer equipped with image analysis system. For removal torque test, rabbits were divided into two groups and removal torque tests were performed at 4 weeks, 10 weeks after implant placement. In total, 88 screw shaped, commercially pure titanium implants (Neoplant, Neobiotech, Seoul, Korea) were used in this study. Labeling pattern reflected differences of two groups in bone formation rate at each period. Histomorphometrically, PRP group showed significantly higher bone volume within threads compared to control group at 2 weeks ($70.30{\pm}4.96%$ vs. $50.68{\pm}6.33%$; P < .01) and 4 weeks ($82.59{\pm}5.94%$ vs. $72.94{\pm}4.57%$; P < .05 ). PRP group at 1, 2 and 4 weeks revealed similar degree of bone volume formation comparable to control group at 2, 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. On the other hand, while PRP group showed higher bone-implant contact ($47.37{\pm}8.09%$) than control group ($33.16{\pm}13.47%$) at 2 weeks, there were no significant differences between PRP group and control group for any experimental period. Removal torque values also showed no significant differences between PRP group and control group at any experimental period (P > .05). These findings imply that PRP could induce rapid, more bone formation around implant during early healing period and get faster secondary stability for reducing healing period, though it has not induced bone maturation enough to resist functional loading.
