  • This research aims to develop biofilm process for the nutrient removal of piggery wastewater. The developed process is the four stage anoxic-oxic biofilm process with recirculation of the final effluent. In summery, the results are as follows: 1. Nitrification in the piggery wastewater built up nitrite because of the high strength ammonia nitrogen. The nitrification of nitrobacter by free ammonia was inhibited in the total ammonia nitrogen loading rate with more than 0.2 kgNH$_{3}$-N/m$^{3}$·d. 2. The maximal total ammonia nitrogen removal rate was obtained at 22$\circ $C and without being affected by the loading rate. But total oxidized nitrogen production rate was largely affected by loading rate. 3. Autooxidation by the organic limit was a cause of the phosphorus release in the aerobic biofilm process. But the phosphorus removal rate was 90 percent less than the influent phosphorus volumetric loading rate of above 0.1 kgP/m$^{3}$·d. Therefore, the phosphorus removal necessarily accompanied the influent loading rate. 4. On the anoxic-oxic BF process, the total average COD mass balance was approximately 67.6 percent. Under this condition, the COD mass removal showed that the cell synthesis and metabolism in aerobic reactor was 42.8 percent and that the denitrification in anoxic reactor was 10.7 percent, respectively.

  • In this study the removal possibility of nutrients of T-P, NH3-N, NO3-N and T-N is examined through a positive experimental study using submerged biofilter of media packing channel method. From the analysis of nutrients removal efficiency for each run of the collected sample following results are obtained. Firstly the result of N/P surveying for inflow shows serious value that excess the limit value of 20 as the values are in the range of 12.0~42.7 and the average is 25.73. Secondly the highest concentration of the incoming NH3-N reaches double of the standard since the concentrations of NH3-N and NO3-N for inflow shows 0.06mg/$\ell$ and 2.5~3.8mg/$\ell$ respectively and the average removal rate which passed the submerged biofilter adopted in this study is a satisfactory level. Next the average removal rate of T-P of 51.5% shows the possiblity of entrophication removal since the removal rate of T-P of 66.8~68.8% in relative low temperature period of RUN 1~2 appeared higher than in RUN 3~6 and T-N shows relatively poor result with the average removal rate of 34.1% And it is known that the bigger BOD/P and BOD/N are the more removal rate increases from the examination result of the relation between BOD/P and BOD/N and the treatment water T-P and T-N to decide the relation with the concentration of organic matters and though that the appropriate proportion is necessary for effective removal of nitrogen and phsophorus.

  • This study investigated the removal performance of a foam fractionator under seawater conditions. The foam fractionator was tested using a 3×3×3 factorial design for operating conditions by combining different solids concentrations (SS; 1, 5, and 10 mg·L-1), surface air velocities (SAV; 1.1, 1.5, and 2.1 cm·sec-1), and hydraulic residence times (HRT; 1, 3, and 6 min) at 16℃. Performance parameters such as daily solids removal rate and efficiency were measured, and a multi-regression model equation was developed accordingly. The daily solids removal rate and removal efficiency varied with the experimental conditions and ranged from 0.14-2.33 g-solids·m-3-air·day-1 and 8.9-96.7 %, respectively. Overall, the daily solids removal rate increased with increasing SS and SAV and decreasing HRT, whereas the removal efficiency increased with increasing SAV and HRT and decreasing SS. The daily solids removal rate (g-solids·m-3-air·day-1) of the foam fractionator for SAV (cm·sec-1), SS (mg·L-1) and HRT (min) were described by the following multi-regression model: Daily solids removal rate [f(z)]=-0.118+0.422SAV+0.094HRT+0.141SS (r2=0.873).

  • The continuous industrial growth increases the volume of pollutants discharged into the water, which induces Cyanobacteria in the receiving bodies. The removal of various cyanobacteria such as Microcystis, Anabaena, and Oscillatoria was explored to analyze their removal characteristics using different chemical and mineral coagulants. The chemical coagulants, including poly aluminium chloride (PACl), Alum, and mineral coagulants such as Loess and Illite, were tested to remove selected cyanobacteria. Results indicated that the removal rate increased with coagulant dosage regardless of the type of coagulant. The removal of selected cyanobacteria using chemical coagulant was found in the order: Microcystis > Anabaena > Oscillatoria. The PACl coagulant showed the most efficient removal rate for Microcystis, Anabaena, Oscillatoria. Removal rate of Microcystis conducted by PACl showed 92% at 100,000 cells/mL and 98.4% at 1,000,000 cells/mL whereas Illite showed lower 70% and Loess showed lower 50% in both 100,000 cells/mL and 1,000,000 cells/mL. The removal rate of Anabaena and Oscillatoria by PACl and Alum was higher 80%, while the other coagulants exhibited lower than 75% at 1,000,000 cells/mL. The removal rate of Oscillatoria by PACl was 80.1%, while the other coagulants exhibited lower than 70% at 1,000,000 cells/mL. Moreover, the mineral coagulants showed better removal efficiency at a higher concentration than low concentration during experiments. Therefore, removing cyanobacteria from water streams can be improved through coagulation by selecting a specific coagulant for a particular type of algae.

  • SBR process used to evaluate the removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus on the basis of a report of research on a precedence at various operation cycle and condition change. Effluent concentration of COD were 50mg/l, 50mg/l, 90mg/l respectively, The removal rates of COD were nearly over 95% at Run 1, 2 and 4. But at Run 3, Effluent concentration of COD was 255.0mg/l, The removal rate of COD was 87% at Run 3. As Oxic/Anoxic rate was fixed and operating cycle of Oxic/Anoxic was changed, the removal rates of T-N were 74.7%, 46.9%, 28.5%, 63.3% respectively at Run 1~4. The case of Run 1 was best result. The removal rates of T-P was appeared in proportion to T-N removal rates and rest of $NO_2-N$. The removal rates of T-P were 51.2%, 35.5%, 41.5%, 51.9% respectively. The removal rates of COD, T-N, T-P were influenced on the change of SBR operation cycle. As organic loading rate was $1.43kgCOD/m^3day$ and C/N ratio was 3.0, operation cycle of Run 1 was best condition of T-N removal rates and T-P removal.

  • In order to examine the availability and effectiveness of crab shell for the removal of heavy metals in aqueous solution the crab shell was compared with cation exchange resin(CER), zeolite granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon(PAC) on aspects of heavy metal removal capacity rate and efficiency. In the removal of Pb, Cd and Cr, the heavy metal removal capacity of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents (CER, zeolite, GAC, PAC) and the order of heavy metal removal capacity was crab shell>CER>zeolite>PAC GAC. However in the removal of Cu, the result of crab shell was slightly lower than that of CER. The initial heavy metal removal rate was affected by the sorts of sorbents and metals. In all heavy metals the heavy metal removal rate of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents. Under the heavy metal concentration of 1.0 mmole/$\ell$ the heavy metal removal efficiency of crab shell was maintained as 93~100% which was much higher than those of any other sorbents.

  • In a batch mode treatment process, which electrolyzes the wastewater after derivation of N-P crystal formation and recovery, the characteristics of pollutant removal induced with the changes of loading rate and hydraulic retention time were studied. $MgCl_2$ was used as Mg source for the formation of struvite and the molar ratio of $MgCl_2$ to $PO_4^{3-}$ in influent was 1.3. When analyzing the average treatment efficiencies and removal characteristics obtained from four separate operations (Run I, II, III, IV), removal efficiencies of PO43- was not function of its loading rate. Under a condition of sufficient aeration and Mg source provided, over 88% of $PO_4^{3-}$ was eliminated by the formation of MAP without any pH adjustment, in spite of loading rate variation. An optimum-loading rate of NH4-N to achieve high removal efficiency was approximately $100g/m^3/d$. Below that loading rate, the removal of NH4-N was proportional to the loading rate into the system, and hence stable and high removal efficiency, over 90%, was achieved. However, when the loading rate increased over that rate, removal efficiency began to drop and fluctuate. Removal efficiency of TOCs was dependant upon the hydraulic retention time ($r^2$=0.97), not upon the loading rate. Stable and high color removal (94%) was obtained with 2 days of HRT in electrolysis reactor.

  • As circuits become increasingly complex and devices sizes shrinks, the demands placed on global planarization of higher level. Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) is an indispensable manufacturing process used to achieve global planarity. In the CMP process, Diamond Disk (DD) plays an important role in the maintenance of removal rate. According to studies, the cause of removal rate decrease in the early or end stage of diamond disk lifetime comes from pad surface change. We also presented pad cutting rate (PCR) as a useful cutting ability index of DD and studied PCR trend about variable parameters that including size, hardness, shape of DD and RPM, pressure of conditioner It has been shown that PCR control ability of pressure and shape is superior to RPM and size. High pressure leads to a decrease of cell open ratio of pad surface because polyurethane of pad is destroyed by pressure. So low pressure high RPM condition is a proper removal rate sustain. By examining correlations between RPM and pressure of conditioner, it has been shown that PCR safe zoneto satisfy proper removal rate has the range 0.06mm/hr to 0.12mm/hr.

  • Microcystin-LR, one of algal toxins induced by the eutrophication of a reservoir, is known to be harmful to human by adversely affecting our liver and brain. Hypochlorous acid is very efficient to remove Microcystin-LR in a clear well. The previous researches showed that CT, pH and temperature affected removal rate in batch tests. It was noted that hydrodynamic properties of clear well could also influence its removal rate. A mathematical model was built using an axial dispersion reactor model and software was used to simulate the removal rate. The model consisted of the second order differential equations including dispersion, convection, Microcystin-LR reaction with chlorine. Kinetic constants were obtained through batch tests with chlorine. They were $0.430{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ and $0.143{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ for pH 7.0 and 8.1, respectively. The axial dispersion reactor model was shown to be useful for the numerical model through conservative tracer tests. The numerical model successfully estimated the removal rate of Microcyctin-LR in a clear well. Numerical simulations showed that a small dispersion number, low pH and long hydraulic retention time were critical for higher removal rate with same chlorine dosage. This model could be used to optimize the operation of a clear well during an eutrophication season.
