  • The leaf temperature is principally regulated by the opening and closing of stomata that is sensitive to various kinds of plant physiological stress. Thus, the analysis of thermal imagery, one of remote sensing technique, will be useful to detect crop physiological condition on smart farm system and phenomics platform. However, there are few case studies using a thermal imaging camera on the agricultural application. In this study, three cases are presented: the effect of lime fertilizer on the rice, the different physiological properties of soybean under shading condition, and the screening of soybean breeds for salinity tolerance characteristic. The leaf temperature measured by thermal imaging camera on the three cases was used effectively to the physiological change and characteristics. However, the thermal imagery analysis requires considering the accuracy of measured temperature and the weather conditions that affects to the leaf temperature.

  • The irrigation schedule system using early detection of crop water stress is required to maintain crop production and save water resource. However, because previous studies focused on the crop under stress dominant condition, the crop physiological properties, which can be measured by remote sensing technique, on early crop water stress condition are not well known. In this study, the canopy temperature, MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI), and Chlorophyll/Carotenoid Index (CCI) are observed on the soybeans given the early water stress using thermal imaging camera and hyperspectral camera. The increased canopy temperature and decreased MTCI are consist with the previous studies which are for the crop of stress dominant-sign. However, the CCI was increased contrary to expectation because it may faster the reduction of carotenoid than chlorophyll in early stage. These behaviors will be useful to not only develop the irrigation system but also using the early detection of crop stress.

  • Recently, forest fires have frequently occurred due to climate change, leading to human and property damage every year. The forest fire monitoring technique using remote sensing can obtain quick and large-scale information of fire-damaged areas. In this study, the Gangneung and Donghae forest fires that occurred in March 2022 were analyzed using the spectral band of Sentinel-2, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the normalized difference water index (NDWI) to classify the affected areas of forest fires. The U-net based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) model was simulated for the fire-damaged areas. The accuracy of forest fire classification in Donghae and Gangneung classification was high at 97.3% (f1=0.486, IoU=0.946). The same model used in Donghae and Gangneung was applied to Uljin and Samcheok areas to get rid of the possibility of overfitting often happen in machine learning. As a result, the portion of overlap with the forest fire damage area reported by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS) was 74.4%, confirming a high level of accuracy even considering the uncertainty of the model. This study suggests that it is possible to quantitatively evaluate the classification of forest fire-damaged area using a spectral band and indices similar to that of the Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500-4) in the Sentinel-2.

  • Due to unpredictable climate change, the frequency of occurrence of water-related disasters and the scale of damage are also continuously increasing. In terms of disaster management, it is essential to identify the damaged area in a wide area and monitor for mid-term and long-term forecasting. In the field of water disasters, research on remote sensing technology using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite images for wide-area monitoring is being actively conducted. Time-series analysis for monitoring requires a complex preprocessing process that collects a large amount of images and considers the noisy radar characteristics, and for this, a considerable amount of time is required. With the recent development of cloud computing technology, many platforms capable of performing spatiotemporal analysis using satellite big data have been proposed. Google Earth Engine (GEE)is a representative platform that provides about 600 satellite data for free and enables semi real time space time analysis based on the analysis preparation data of satellite images. Therefore, in this study, immediate water disaster damage detection and mid to long term time series observation studies were conducted using GEE. Through the Otsu technique, which is mainly used for change detection, changes in river width and flood area due to river flooding were confirmed, centered on the torrential rains that occurred in 2020. In addition, in terms of disaster management, the change trend of the time series waterbody from 2018 to 2022 was confirmed. The short processing time through javascript based coding, and the strength of spatiotemporal analysis and result expression, are expected to enable use in the field of water disasters. In addition, it is expected that the field of application will be expanded through connection with various satellite bigdata in the future.

  • The MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) is one of quality assesment factors to evaluate the performance of satellite images. Image restoration is needed for MTF compensation, but it is an ill-posed problem and doesn't have a certain solution. Lots of filters were suggested to solve this problem, such as Inverse Filter(IF), Pseudo Inverse Filter(PIF) and Wiener Filter(WF). The most commonly used filter is a WF, but it has a limitation on distinguishing signal and noise. The L-curve-based Modified Wiener Filter(MWF) is a solution technique using a Tikhonov regularization method. The L-curve is used for estimating an optimal regularization parameter. The image restoration was performed with Dubaisat-1 images for PIF, WF, and MWF. It is found that the image restored with MWF results in more improved MTF by 20.93% and 10.85% than PIF and WF, respectively.

  • Desertification in China, one of the source regions of yellow dust, has been worsen by industrialization and extreme land development, which increases the damage caused by yellow dust in Korea. Because the yellow dust from China affects not only their own country, but also neighboring countries, it is becoming an international problem, and China has been started afforestation projects to prevent excessive desertification with the help of the international community. However, it is only possible for identifying the results of afforestation projects to check afforestation result reports from National Bureau of Statistics of China, which makes it difficult to check out tangible results. Therefore, this study was conducted by using remote sensing technique for monitoring afforestation status of Yulin, shaanxi, China. in which an afforestation project has been carried out steadily. MODIS imagery was used as remote sensing data and it was confirmed that vegetation has been increased through vegetation indices from 2000 to 2014 and afforestation areas were estimated as same trend of ground reference data.

  • On-site remote sensing technique by using single lens reflex(SLR) digital camera will be expected as the useful tool for the vegetation measurement field such as a crop growth management, the monitoring of revegetation slope and the evaluation of environment. We reviewed the availability of the vegetation measurement using a digital camera which is sailed for general-purpose. As a result, we could analysis relationship with the illuminance of image plane and incidence energy of multitemporal observation images by doing gamma correction and exposure compensation. And also, we proposed the model formulas for the correction of influences of capturing angle and illuminance. In addition, we obtained high correlation of normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) between digital camera and spectral photometer.

  • Recently, environmental issues such as climate warming, ozone layer depletion, reduction of tropical forests and desertification are emerging as global environmental problems beyond national problems. And international attention and effort have been carried out in many ways to solve these problems. In this study, the growth of green was calculated quantitatively using the technique of remote sensing and temperature change was figured out through temperature extraction in the city. The land-cover changes and thermal changes for research areas were analyzed using Landsat TM images on May 2002 and May 2009. Surface temperature distribution was calculated using spectral degree of brightness of Band 6 that was Landsat TM thermal infrared sensor to extract the ground surface temperature in the city. As a result of research, the area of urban green belt was increased by $2.87km^2$ and the ground surface temperature decreased by $0.6^{\circ}C{\sim}0.8^{\circ}C$ before and after tree planting projects. Henceforth, if the additional study about temperature of downtown is performed based on remote sensing and measurement data, it will contribute to solve the problems about the urban environment.

  • Very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery provide valuable information on urban change monitoring due to multi-temporal observation over large areas. Recently, there has been increased interest in the urban change detection technique using VHR Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging system, because it can take images regardless of solar illumination and weather condition. In this paper, we proposed a texture-based urban change detection method using the VHR SAR texture features generated from Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM). In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method, the result was compared, visually and quantitatively, with the result of Non-Coherent Change Detection (NCCD) which is widely used for the change detection of VHR SAR image. The experimental results showed the greater detection accuracy and the visually satisfactory result compared with the NCCD method. In conclusion, the proposed method has shown a great potential for the extraction of urban change information from VHR SAR imagery.

  • Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique using multi master interferograms can be effective to detect surface deformation in forest area. In this paper, The analysis reveals area of 2-dimension surface deformation at Seguam Island in Aleutian Arc., Alaska. We acquired ERS-1/2 data from track 201 and 473 datasets on Seguam Island from 1992 to 2008. This study analyze surface deformation applying Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) and SBAS time series method using two adjacent tracks. As a results, it was calculated that subsidence -1~2 cm in LOS direction and - 2~3 cm in vertical direction. The horizontal direction was repeated contraction and expansion. The observation of 2-dimension displacements explained the volcanic activity on Seguam island. Also, it is believed to be used for basic data to estimate movements of magma source.
