In this paper, we propose one unsupervised classification technique using the degree of polarization (DoP) and the co-polarized phase-difference (CPD) statistics, instead of the entropy and alpha. It is shown that the DoP is closely related to the entropy, and the CPD to the alpha. The DoP explains the feature how much the effect of multiple reflections is contained. Hence, the DoP could be used as an important factor for classifying classes. The CPD can also be computed from the measured Mueller matrix elements. For the smooth surface scattering, the CPD is about $0^{\circ}$, and for dihedral-type scattering, the CPD is about $180^{\circ}$. A DoP-CPD diagram with appropriate boundaries between six different classes is developed based on the SAR image. The classification results are compared with the existing Entropy-alpha diagram as well as the IPL-AirSAR polarimetric data. The technique may have capability to classify an SAR image into six major classes; a bare surface, a village, a crown-layer short vegetation canopy, a trunk-layer short vegetation canopy, a crown-layer forest, and a trunk-dominated forest. Based on the DoP and CPD analysis, a simple three-component decomposition technique was also proposed.
This paper analyzes three theories for land degradation assessment and internationl/domestic methods for land degradation monitoring and assessment. Under the guidance of absolute degradation thought, this paper proposes the technological framework for monitoring and appraising cultivated land degradation based on the 3S technique. We can apply 3S technique and analyze the nature, the environmental, the social, and the economic elements which influence the land utilization and degradation synthetically, to set up the indicator system of the cultivated land degradation monitoring and assessment based on 3S technique; to propose the degradation information extraction methods based on 3S technique; to create the quantitative assessment model and method for land degradation; to analyze the ecological environment response of land use and degradation quantitatively; and to propose the measure, policy and suggestion for solving the land degradation problem from the point of view of land utilization.
Light absorption coefficient per unit mass of particles, i.e., specific absorption coefficient, is important as one of the main parameters in developing algorithms for ocean color remote sensing. Specific absorption coefficient of chlorophyll ($a^*_{ph}$) and suspended sediment ($a^*_{ss}$) were analyzed with a spectrophotometer using the "wet filter technique" and "Kishino method" for the seawater collected in the Yellow and Mediterranean Sea. An improved data-recovery method for the filter technique was also developed using spectrum slopes. This method recovered the baselines of spectrum that were often altered in the original methods. High $a^*_{ph}({lambda})$ values in the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea and low values in the Yellow Sea were observed, ranging 0.01 to 0.12 $m^2$/mg at the chlorophyll maximum absorption wavelength of 440 nm. The empirical relationship between $a^*_{ph}$(440nm) and chlorophyll concentrations () was found to fit a power function ($a^*_{ph}$=0.039 $^{-0.369}$), which was similar to Bricaud et al. (1995). Absorption specific coefficients for suspended sediment ($a^*_{ss}$) did not show any relationship with concentrations of suspended sediment. However, an average value of $a^*_{ss}$ ranging 0.005 - 0.08 $m^2$/g at 440nm, was comparable to the specific absorption coefficient of soil (loess) measured by Ahn (1990). The morepronounced variability of $a^*_{ss}$ than $a^*_{ph}$ was determined from the variable mixing ratio values between particulate organic matter and mineral. It can also be explained by a wide size-distribution range for SS which were determined by their specific gravity, bottom state, depth and agitation of water mass by wind in the sea surface.

To overcome with large size noise source distribution network design difficulty in interferometric radiometer system, especially for sub-Y-type array, a new on-board calibration technique using noise re-radiation is proposed in this paper. The suggested calibration technique is using noise re-radiation effect of center antenna after noise source injection from matched load. This approach is especially proper to sub-Y-type array interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer in mm-wave frequency band. Compared with noise injection network of a conventional synthetic aperture radiometer, the system mass, volume, and hardware complexity is reduced and cost-effective. Only one internal noise source, matched load, is used for injection using noise re-radiation technique a small set of sub-Y receiver channels is calibrated. Detailed calibration scenario is discussed and simulation results about noise reradiation effect are presented.
Although ship's draught information onboard is substantial for both the safety of navigation and the estimation of loaded cargoes, its accuracy depends, in conventional surveying method, on the skillfulness of observers and the condition of the sea surface round the vessel. To obtain more accurate information accessibly, measuring instruments with sophisticated sensors such as mechanical, electronic and ultrasonic transducers have been developed. However, they have still limitation in accuracy and in making up a system due to the complexity of processing signal. In this paper, we propose a new technique for analyzing ultrasonic pulse signal, in order to improve the measurement accuracy and simplify a remote sensing system of draught by ultrasonic waves. In this technique, pulse signal is translated into phase curve which is composed of the phase value defined in time domain. Then, the time interval between two signals different in waveform, is waveform, is analytically determined by calculating average time difference on phase curves. Also, analytical procedure can be carried out in real time with the successive five data sampled at T/4, for high speed digital processing with computer and A/D converter. This technique is useful for measuring draught under the influence of sea condition and for interfacing its data briefly to the integrated bridge system.

The diversity, expansion of human activity and rapid urbanization make modem society to faced with problems like damage of nature and drain of natural resources. Under these circumstances rapid and accurate change detection techniques, which can detect wide range utilization changes, are needed for efficient management and utilization plan of national territory. In this study to perform change detection from remote sensing images, space analysis technique contained in Geographic Information System is applied. And from this technique, the software. that can execute new change detection algorithm, query, inquiry and analysis, is produced. This software is on the basis of graphic user interface and has many functions such as format conversion, grid calculation, statistical processing, display and reference. In this study, simultaneously change detection for multi-temporal satellite images can be performed and integrated one change image about four different periods was produced. Further more software user can acquire land cover change information for an specific area through querying and questioning about yearly changes. Finally making of every application module for change detection into one window based visual basic program, can be produced user convenience and automatic performances.
In 2-pass differential SAR interferometry(DInSAR), the topographic phase signature can be removed by using a digital elevation model(DEM) to isolate the contribution of deformation from interferometric phase. This method has an advantage of no unwrapping process, but applicability is limited by precision of the DEM used. The residual phase in 2-pass differential interferogram accounts for error of DEM used in the processing provided that no actual deformation exits. The objective of this paper is a preliminary study to improve DEM precision using low precision DEM and 2-pass DInSAR technique, and we applied the 2-pass DInSAR technique to Asan area. ERS-1/2 tandem complex images and DTED level 0 DEM were used for DInSAR, and the precision of resulting DEM was estimated by a 1:25,000 digital map. The input DEM can be improved by simply adding the DInSAR output to the original low precision DEM. The absolute altitude error of the improved DEM is 9.7m, which is about the half to that of the original DTED level 0 data. And absolute altitude error of the improved DEM is better than that from InSAR technique, 15.8m. This approach has an advantage over the InSAR technique in efficiently reducing layover effects over steep slope region. This study demonstrates that 2-pass DInSAR can also be used to improve DEM precision.
In this study the retrieval algorithms have been developed to retrieve total precipitable water (TPW) from Terra/Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) infrared measurements using a physical iterative retrieval method and a split-window technique over East Asia. Retrieved results from these algorithms were validated against Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) over ocean and radiosonde observation over land and were analyzed for investigating the key factors affecting the accuracy of results and physical processes of retrieval methods. Atmospheric profiles from Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS), which produces analysis and prediction field of atmospheric variables over East Asia, were used as first-guess profiles for the physical retrieval algorithm. We used RTTOV-7 radiative transfer model to calculate the upwelling radiance at the top of the atmosphere. For the split-window technique, regression coefficients were obtained by relating the calculated brightness temperature to the paired radiosonde-estimated TPW. Physically retrieved TPWs were validated against SSM/I and radiosonde observations for 14 cases in August and December 2004 and results showed that the physical method improves the accuracy of TPW with smaller bias in comparison to TPWs of RDAPS data, MODIS products, and TPWs from split-window technique. Although physical iterative retrieval can reduce the bias of first-guess profiles and bring in more accurate TPWs, the retrieved results show the dependency upon initial guess fields. It is thought that the dependency is due to the fact that the water vapor absorption channels used in this study may not reflect moisture features in particular near surface.

The settlement at the railroad foundation is often the leading cause of track irregularity and potential derailment. The control of such deformation is considered necessary in track maintenance practice. Nevertheless, the monitoring process performed by in situ surveying requires an excessive amount of manpower and cost. The InSAR, a remote sensing technique by RADAR satellite, is used to overcome such a burden. The PS-InSAR technique is preferred for a long-term precise monitoring method. However, this study aims to obtain relatively brief analysis results from only two satellite images using the D-InSAR technique, while a minimum of 25 images are required for PS-InSAR. This study verifies the precision of D-InSAR within a few millimeters by inspecting railroad facilities and land settlements in Korea Railroad Research Institute's test track with images from TerraSAR-X Satellite. Multiple corner reflectors were adopted and installed on an embankment and the building roof to raise the surface reflectivity. Those reflectors were slightly adjusted periodically to verify the detecting performance. The results revealed the optimum distance between corner reflectors. Further, the deformation of railway tracks, slopes, and concrete structures was analyzed successively. In conclusion, this study indicates that the D-InSAR technique effectively monitors the short-term deformation of a broad area such as railway structures.
Forest canopy height can be used for estimate of above-ground forest biomass (AGB) by means of the allometric equation. The remote locations and harsh conditions of mangrove forests limit the number of field inventory data stations needed for large-scale modeling of carbon and biomass dynamics. Although active and passive spaceborne sensors have proven successful in mapping mangroves globally, the sensors generally have coarse spatial resolution and overlook small-scale features. Here we generate a 12 m spatial resolution mangrove canopy height map from TanDEM-X data acquired over the world largest intact mangrove forest located in the Sundarbans. With single-pol. TanDEM-X data from 2011 to 2013, the proposed technique makes use of the fact that the double-bounce scattering that occurs between the water and mangrove trees yields water surface level elevation over mangrove forest areas, thus allowing us to estimate forest height with the assumption of an underlying flat topography. Our observations have led to a large-scale mangrove canopy height map over the entire Sundarbans region at a 12 m spatial resolution. Our canopy height estimates were validated with ground measurements acquired in 2015, a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and a RMSE of 0.84 m. With globally available TanDEM-X data, the technique described here will potentially provide accurate global maps of mangrove canopy height at 12 m spatial resolution and provide crucial information for understanding biomass and carbon dynamics in the mangrove ecosystems.
