  • The spatial distribution of snow cover area is a crucial input to models of hydrology and climate in alpine and other seasonally snow covered areas. The objective in our study is to develop a rapidly automatic and high accuracy snow cover mapping algorithm applicable for the Tibetan Plateau which is the most sensitive about climatic change. Monitoring regional snow extent reqires higher temoral frequency-moderate spatial resolution imagery. Our algorithm is based AVHRR and MODIS data and will provide long-term fraction snow cover area map.We present here a technique is based on the multiple endmembers approach and by taking advantages of current approaches, we developed a technique for automatic selection of local reference spectral endmembers.

Remote sensing has been regarded as one of effective tools for crop condition monitoring and crop type classification. Since 2010, RDA (Rural Development Administration) has been developing technology for monitoring on crop condition using remote sensing and model. These special papers address recent state-of-the-art of remote sensing and geospatial technologies for providing operational agricultural information, such as, crop yield estimation methods using remote sensing data and process-oriented model, crop classification algorithm, monitoring and prediction of weather and climate based on remote sensing data, system design and architecture of crop monitoring system, history on rice yield forecasting method.

  • The real-time reception and recording of down-link mission data from a satellite requires the highest reliability because the data lost in receiving process cannot be recovered. The data receiving and recording system has moved from a set of dedicated hardware and software components to commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components in order to reduce the system cost as well as to upgrade the system easily for handling other satellite data. The use of COTS hardware and middleware components prevents the system developer from correcting or modifying the internal operations of the COTS components, and hence, instant performance degradation of the COTS components which affects the reliable data acquisition must be covered by a software algorithm. This paper introduces the instant performance problem of a COTS data recording device which leads to the data loss in the real-time data reception and recording process. As a result, the requirement of the modification of the conventional data read/write technique is issued. In order to overcome the data loss problem due to the use of COTS components and the conventional software technique, a new algorithm called a software buffering technique is proposed. The experiments show that the application of the proposed technique results in reliable real-time reception and recording of high speed serial data.

  • The Studying is on developing precision of the moisture information on a soil. We used the data of AQUA AMSR-E which were obtained by Direct Receiving System in Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA). Although we know the Soil Moisture Information(SMI) helps the numerical weather model to produce the realistic results, we couldn't do it for the problem on a spatial resolution of the data is too low to apply. So we've tried to develop in a spatial resolution by using the AMSR-E data with a Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and Normal Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) from AQUA MODIS and compared the difference between their information in statics. The result is more precise than the simple algorithm by a polarization ratio, and we could get the better result to use in forecast practically, if it's apply to get more detail in the vegetation temperature.

  • In this study, Helikite, Low Altitude Remote Sensing (LARS) platform, was used to acquire coastal images. In the obtained image, the land and water masses were divided using four types of region clustering algorithms, and then waterline was extracted using edge detection. Quantitative comparisons were not possible due to the lack of in-situ waterline data. But, based on the image of the infrared band where water masses and land are relatively clear, the waterlines extracted by each algorithm were compared. As a result, it was found that each algorithm differed significantly in the part where the distinction between water masses and land was ambiguous. This is considered to be a difference in the process of selecting the threshold value of the digital number that each algorithm uses to distinguish the regions. The extraction of waterlines through various algorithms is expected to be used in conjunction with a Low Altitude Remote Sensing system that can be continuously monitored in the future to explain the rapid changes in coastal shape through several years of long-term data from fixed areas.

  • A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. It lastly is shown that based on ship information extracted from JERS data, a qualitative evaluation method of environmental stress is introduced.

  • DEM(digital elevation map) is a very useful information in various applications. In this paper, we have studied on the terrain matching algorithm using the DEM, which was proposed by Rodriguez and Aggarwal(1990) for an aircraft navigation system. We evaluated its performance using syntactic images. Cliff maps and critical points are used for the reduction of computation time and information size to be processed. The computer simulation shows that though the computational complexity is high, the technique is efficient even to noisy images.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the Automatic Fingerprint Verfication System by digital computer based on specially in PC level. Fingerprint is used as means of personal identity verification in view of that it has the high reliability and safety. Fingerprint pattern recognition algorithm is constitute of 3 stages, namely of the preprocessing, the feature extraction and the recognition. The preprocessing stage includes smoothing, binarization, thinning and restoration. The feature extraction stage includes the extraction of minutiae and its features. The recognition stage includes the registration and the matching score calculation which measures the similarity between two images. Tests for this study with 325 pairs of fingerprint resulted in 100% of separation which which in turn is turned out to be the reliability of this algorithm.

  • Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) to be launched in year 2008 will be the first Korean multi-purpose geostationary satellite aiming at three major missions, i.e.: communication, ocean, and meteorological applications. The development of systems for the meteorological mission sponsored by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) consists of payloads, ground system, and data processing system. The program called COMS Meteorological Data Processing System (CMDPS) has been initiated for the development of data processing system. The primary objective ofCMDPS is to derive the level-2 environmental products from geo-Iocated and calibrated level 1.5 COMS data. Preliminary design for the level-2 data processing system consists of 16 baseline products and will be refined by end of 3rd project year. Also considered for the development are the necessary initial information such as land use and digital elevation map, algorithms for the vicarious calibration and procedures for the calibration monitoring, and radiative transfer model. Here, we briefly introduce the overall development strategy, flow chart for the intended baseline products, a few preliminary algorithm results and future plans.

  • It is often necessary to observe the working environment of a robot to control it efficiently in the remote location. The remote sensing data and control commands are transmitted via various media such as radio, microwave, and computer network. The World Wide Web can be used as the infrastructure for teleoperation of mobile robots. In this paper we propose an advanced technique of the remote control of mobile robots on the web. For the real-time control, the image separation algorithm is proposed to transmit the current positions of mobile robots instead of transmitting the full frame image. It is shown by experiments that the proposed algorithm is effective.
