  • In this paper, a virtual force is generated and fed back to the operator to make the teleoperation more reliable, which reflects the relationship between a slave robot and an uncertain remote environment as a form of an impedance. In general, for the teleoperation, the teleoperated mobile robot takes pictures of the remote environment and sends the visual information back to the operator over the Internet. Because of the limitations of communication bandwidth and narrow view-angles of camera, it is not possible to watch certain regions, for examples, the shadow and curved areas. To overcome this problem, a virtual force is generated according to both the distance between the obstacle and the robot and the approaching velocity of the obstacle w.r.t the collision vector based on the ultrasonic sensor data. This virtual force is transferred back to the master (two degrees of freedom joystick) over the Internet to enable a human operator to estimate the position of obstacle at the remote site. By holding this master, in spite of limited visual information, the operator can feel the spatial sense against the remote environment. It is demonstrated by experiments that this collision vector based haptic reflection improves the performance of teleoperated mobile robot significantly.

  • Recently, the necessity of predicting changes for monitoring ocean is widely recognized. In this study, we performed a time series prediction of remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs), which can indicate changes in the ocean, using Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data. Using GOCI-I data, we trained a multi-scale Convolutional Long-Short-Term-Memory (ConvLSTM) which is proposed in this study. Validation was conducted using GOCI-II data acquired at different periods from GOCI-I. We compared model performance with the existing ConvLSTM models. The results showed that the proposed model, which considers both spatial and temporal features, outperformed other models in predicting temporal trends of Rrs. We checked the temporal trends of Rrs learned by the model through long-term prediction results. Consequently, we anticipate that it would be available in periodic change detection.

  • A nonlinear attitude model of a satellite with thrusters, magnetic torquers and a reaction wheel cluster is developed. Then the linearized version of this satellite attitude model is derived far the attitude hold mode. For comparison purpose, various control methods are considered for attitude control of a satellite. We consider a proportional derivative controller which is actually used in the remote sensing satellite, KOMPSAT. Then a comparison is made with an H$_2$controller, an H$\sub$$\infty$/ controller, and a mixed H$_2$/ H$\sub$$\infty$/ controller. The analysis and numerical studies show that the proportional derivative controller's performance is limited in the sense that the pitch angle cannot approach zero. The simulations also show that among three control methods (H$_2$control, H$\sub$$\infty$/ control, and mixed H$_2$/ H$\sub$$\infty$/ control) H$_2$control has the fastest response time, H$\sub$$\infty$/ control has the slowest and mixed H$_2$/ H$\sub$$\infty$/ control comes in between the first two control methods. On the other hand, H$\sub$$\infty$/ control used least amount of control effort while H$_2$control required the most.

  • Recent improvements of satellite remote sensing sensors which are represented by hyperspectral imaging sensors and high spatial resolution sensors provide a large amount of data, typically several hundred megabytes per one scene. Moreover, increasing information exchange via internet and information super-highway requires the developments of more active service systems for processing and analysing of remote sensing data in order to provide value-added products. In this sense, an advanced satellite data processing system is being developed to achive high performance in computing speed and efficieney in processing a huge volume of data, and to make possible network computing and easy improving, upgrading and managing of systems. JAVA internet programming language provides several advantages for developing software such as object-oriented programming, multi-threading and robust memory managent. Using these features, a satellite data processing system named as GeoPixel has been developing using JAVA language. The GeoPixel adopted newly developed techniques including object-pipe connect method between each process and multi-threading structure. In other words, this system has characteristics such as independent operating platform and efficient data processing by handling a huge volume of remote sensing data with robustness. In the evaluation of data processing capability, the satisfactory results were shown in utilizing computer resources(CPU and Memory) and processing speeds.

  • This paper reports design and demonstration of optical systems for reflective-type remote optical displacement sensors. Optical systems for light illumination sources and a position sensitive detector (PSD) for the displacement sensor were developed to sense displacement of bridges and instability of skyscrapers in a distance range from 10 m to 250 m to an accuracy better than a few mm. Performance of the optical systems was verified by composing a displacement sensor and by using it in measurement of displacement of a remote target with proper reflective optics depending on distance. The displacement sensor was composed of two LED light sources, each with collimating optics, and a two-dimensional PSD with telescope-type optics. Its displacement resolutions was measured to be 0.1 mm at a distance of 10 m and less than 3 mm at a distance of 250 m.

  • This paper defines the telepresence as a particular type of experience, rather than a collection of hardware. Defining telepresence in this way provides a means for examining telepresence in relation to other types of mediated experience. Presence refers to the natural perception of an environment, and telepresence refers to the mediated perception of an environment. Factors influencing whether a particular mediated environment will induce a sense of telepresence include the following: the combination of sensory stimuli employed in the environment, the ways in which participants are able to interact with the environment, and the characteristics of the individual experiencing the environment. Telepresence art invites the people from remote worlds to networked cyber space and creates the experience of 'being there' by making participants control the virtual reality system and receive feedback from their teleactions. It is the way to produce an open and engaging experience that manifests the cultural changes brought about by remote control, remote vision, telekinesis, and real-time exchange of audiovisual information. The principal determinants of telepresence are sensory immersion, sensory fidelity, cognitive fidelity and personal factors. This paper applies the 4 determinants to telepresence art works such as Ken Goldberg's Telegarden, Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss' The Home of the Brain, Paul Sermon's Telematic Dreaming, Telematic Vision, Eduardo Kac's Uriapuru, Simon Penny's Traces and Paul Sermon & Andrea Zapp's A Body of Water.

  • Cyber-Physical Systems are tight integration of computation, networking and physical objects to sense, monitor, and control the physical world. This paper presents a novel architecture that combines two next generation technologies i.e. cyber-physical systems and Cloud computing to develop a ubiquitous healthcare based infrastructure. Through this infrastructure, patients and elderly people get remote assistance, monitoring of their health conditions and medication while living in proximity of home. Consequently, this leads to major cost savings. However, there are various challenges that need to be overcome before building such systems. These challenges include making system real-time responsive, reliability, stability and privacy. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an architecture that deals with these challenges.
