  • Desertification in China, one of the source regions of yellow dust, has been worsen by industrialization and extreme land development, which increases the damage caused by yellow dust in Korea. Because the yellow dust from China affects not only their own country, but also neighboring countries, it is becoming an international problem, and China has been started afforestation projects to prevent excessive desertification with the help of the international community. However, it is only possible for identifying the results of afforestation projects to check afforestation result reports from National Bureau of Statistics of China, which makes it difficult to check out tangible results. Therefore, this study was conducted by using remote sensing technique for monitoring afforestation status of Yulin, shaanxi, China. in which an afforestation project has been carried out steadily. MODIS imagery was used as remote sensing data and it was confirmed that vegetation has been increased through vegetation indices from 2000 to 2014 and afforestation areas were estimated as same trend of ground reference data.

  • Wave observation is widely used to direct observation method for observing the water surface elevation using wave buoy or pressure gauge and remote-sensing wave observation method. The wave buoy and pressure gauge can produce high-quality wave data but have disadvantages of the high risk of damage and loss of the instrument, and high maintenance cost in the offshore area. On the other hand, remote observation method such as radar is easy to maintain by installing the equipment on the land, but the accuracy is somewhat lower than the direct observation method. This study investigates the data quality of MIROS Wave and Current Radar (MWR) installed at Dokdo and improve the data quality of remote wave observation data using the wave buoy (CWB) observation data operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. We applied and developed the three types of wave data quality control; 1) the combined use (Optimal Filter) of the filter designed by MIROS (Reduce Noise Frequency, Phillips Check, Energy Level Check), 2) Spike Test Algorithm (Spike Test) developed by OOI (Ocean Observatories Initiative) and 3) a new filter (H-Ts QC) using the significant wave height-period relationship. As a result, the wave observation data of MWR using three quality control have some reliability about the significant wave height. On the other hand, there are still some errors in the significant wave period, so improvements are required. Also, since the wave observation data of MWR is different somewhat from the CWB data in high waves of over 3 m, further research such as collection and analysis of long-term remote wave observation data and filter development is necessary.

  • The conventional remote fire image monitoring system has insufficient ability to check the video information of the fire scene in real time, so it was difficult to grasp the actual situation in case of fire and cope with it rapidly. In this paper, we propose a design of realtime fire image monitoring system using new RTSP module, which is composed of a server with RTSP function and client for transmitting and receiving images using wifi from a camera attached to such a robot system. We implemented the proposed remote fire monitoring system capable of receiving live video transmitted from a camera and confirmed, by field test, that the fire video image was normally received.

  • This paper presents a low-cost prototype for monitoring online the maximum power produced by a domestic photovoltaic (PV) system using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The most common tracking algorithms (P&O, InCond, HC, VSS InCond, and FL) were first simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and then implemented in a low-cost microcontroller (Arduino). The current, voltage, load current, load voltage, power at the maximum power point, duty cycle, module temperature, and in-plane solar irradiance are monitored. Using IoT technology, users can check in real time the change in power produced by their installation anywhere and anytime without additional effort or cost. The designed prototype is suitable for domestic PV applications, particularly at remote sites. It can also help users check online whether any abnormality has happened in their system based simply on the variation in the produced maximum power. Experimental results show that the system performs well. Moreover, the prototype is easy to implement, low in cost, saves time, and minimizes human effort. The developed monitoring system could be extended by integrating fault detection and diagnosis algorithms.

  • Along the era of "Internet of Things (IoT)" in which the physical objects can be connected to the Internet, a smart power management system is proposed in this paper. This system consists of two modules, an electrical outlet device embedding the Wi-Fi capabilities and a web server supporting the management as well as monitoring of power consumptions. Also, with the proposed system, a customer can easily check the status of power consumption and turn on/off the sockets through the developed mobile website. The proposed system is designed to avoid firewall or PC setting problems involving a user's inconvenience.

  • GK2A(GEO-KOMPSAT-2A)satellite has been operating excellently since its launch in Dec 2018. The secondary payload called KSEM (Korean Space Environment Monitor) was equipped into the GK2A satellite along with AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) sensor. KSEM is the Korea's first operational geostationary space weather sensor and has been developed collaboratively by KHU (Kyung Hee University) and KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). The interface works between KSEM and GK2A were conducted by KARI. Various interface tests, which aim for evaluating effective functionality of KSEM with the spacecraft, were intensively conducted at KARI facilities. Main tests consisted of mechanical and electrical check-up activities between the KSEM and GK2A. Interface tests of KSEM, which involve pre-launch tests such as ETB and GK2A system level tests, were conducted to evaluate functional and performance of KSEM before the launch. The tests carried out during the GK2A LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit Phase) and IOT (In Orbit Test) period (Dec 2018 ~ June 2019) showed excellent in-orbit performance of KSEM data.

  • Continuing advance in computers and MIDI devices has accelerated research on the computerized music technology, Realization of high speed computer communication networks facilitated on-line computer music systems, which needs to send a volume of multimedia data. This paper presents the design and implementation of the Remote Concert Education System which helps users practice ensemble without gathering in a room. The system maintains the music database, identifies tones and measures of the melody played with different instruments, check the correctness on-line, and finally provides the analysed results of the ensemble. The developed system can be used as a supporting system for music education if high speed communication network is available.
