  • In this paper, we propose remote navigation control for intelligent robot using particle swarm optimization(PSO). The proposed system consists of interfaces for intelligent robot navigation and user interface in order to control the intelligent robot remotely. And communication interfaces using TCP/IP socket is used. To do this, we first design the fuzzy navigation controller based on expert's knowledge for intelligent robot navigation. At this time, we use the PSO algorithm in order to identify the membership functions of fuzzy control rules. And then, we propose the remote system in order to navigate the robot remotely. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the developed controller and remote system through some experiments.

  • We are developing a shared remote control mobile robot for aerial work in nuclear power plants (NPPs); a robot consists of a mobile platform, a telescopic mast, and a dual-arm slave with a working tool. It is used at a high location operating the manual operation mechanism of a fuel changer of a heavy water NPP. The robot system can cut/weld a pipe remotely in the case of an emergency or during the dismantling of the NPP. Owing to the challenging control mission considering limited human operator cognitive capability, some remote tasks require a shared control scheme, which demands systematic software design and integration. Therefore, we designed the architecture of the software systematically.

  • This study shows a control strategy that acquires both precision and manipulation sensitivity of remote center motion with manual traction for a surgical assistant robot. Remote center motion is an essential function of a laparoscopic surgical robot. The robot has to keep the position of the insertion port in a three-dimensional space, and general laparoscopic surgery needs 4-DoF (degree-of-freedom) motions such as pan, tilt, spin, and forward/backward. The proposed robot consists of a 6-axis collaborative robot and a 2-DoF end-effector. A 6-axis collaborative robot performs the cone-shaped trajectory with pan and tilt motion of an end-effector maintaining the position of remote center. An end-effector deals with the remaining 2-DoF movement. The most intuitive way a surgeon manipulates a robot is through direct teaching. Since the accuracy of maintaining the remote center position is important, direct teaching is implemented based on position control in this study. A force/torque sensor which is attached to between robot and end-effector estimates the surgeon's intention and generates the command of motion. The predefined remote center position and the pan and tilt angles generated from direct teaching are input as a command for position control. The command generation algorithm determines the direct teaching sensitivity. Required torque for direct teaching and accuracy of remote center motion are analyzed by experiments of panning and tilting motion.

  • Embedded device that can support mobile computing environment has been popular recently. In this study, we propose a new robot application based on embedded device to control a mobile robot using a touch-based remote interface with information display of robot trajectory and sensors. We developed the robot application using Microsoft's.Net Compact Framework and Zigbee data communication with Windows CE kernel based embedded device. In experiment, we evaluated the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed system by showing a remote robot control using touch interface and a information display of the robot.

  • This paper describes a development of remote measurement robot with vision system. The developed robot consists of robot controller and host PC program. The robot and camera can move with 2 degree of freedom by independent remote controlling a user friendly designe joystick. A visual image and command data translated through 900MHz and 447MHz RF controller, respectively. To show the validity of the developed system, operations of the robot in the field area were illustrated.

  • In this paper, we introduce a robot-assisted medical diagnostic system that enables remote ultrasound (US) imaging to be applied to the conventional telemedicine, which has been possible only with interviewing or a visual exam. In particular, a master-slave robot system is developed that ultrasonic diagnosis specialist can control the position and orientation of US probe in the remote place. The slave robot is designed to be compact, lightweight, and hand-held so that it can easily transfer to the remote healthcare center. Moreover, 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) probe motion is possible by the robot design based on Stewart platform. The master device is also based on a similar structure of the slave robot. To connect master and slave system in the wide area network (WAN) environment, a hardware CODEC was developed. In this paper, we introduce the detail of each component and the results of the recent experiments conducted in the remote sites by the developed robotic ultrasound imaging system.

  • Remote Laser welding technology for manufacturing automotive body is studied. Laser welding and industrial robot systems are used for the robot based laser welding system. The laser system is used 1.6kW Fiber laser(YLR-1600) of IPG. The robot system is used HX130-02 of Hyundai Heavy Industry(payload : 130kg). The robot based laser welding system is equipped with laser scanner system for remote laser welding. The welding joints of steel plate and steel plate coated with zinc are butt and lapped joints. The quality test of the laser welding are through the observation the shape of bead on plate and cross-section of welding part. During past three years the laser system, 4kW Nd:YAG laser (HL4006D) of Trumpf was used and the robot system, IRB6400R of ABB (payload:120kg) was used. The new laser source, robot and laser scanner system are used to increase the processing speed and to improve the process efficiency. This paper introduces the robot based remote laser welding system to resolve the limited welding speed and accuracy of the conventional laser welding system.

  • Field robots are used in various fields, such as agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, and construction; their use has recently expanded to include submarine areas. Field robots can aid in various tasks, such as soil transport, ground clearance, and dismantling of buildings. As field robots are used in a variety of different areas, the difficulty of the work is also quite varied. Increased difficulty is associated with an increased risk of accidents involving the field robot. In order to reduce the accident rate of field robot workers, the need for digitalization and automation of field robots is becoming more of an issue. To this end, it is necessary to study a system that enables workers to do their work without directly contacting a field robot. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a control system for wireless remote control of a small field robot. The field robot can be wirelessly controlled by a worker in a remote location if the worker cannot be present at the work site. The implemented remote system is tested according to the type of work, and the operating characteristics of the remote system are assessed.

  • In this paper, we introduce a case study of developing a miniature humanoid robot that has 16 degrees of freedom and is able to perform statically stable walking. The developed humanoid robot is 37cm tall and weighs 1,200g. RC servo motors are used as actuators. The robot can walk forward and turn to any direction on even surface. It equipped with a small digital camera, so it can transmit vision data to a remote host computer via wireless modem. The robot can be operated in two modes; One is a remote-controlled mode, in which the robot behaves according to the command given by a human operator through the user-interface program running on a remote host computer, the other is a stand-alone mode, in which the robot behaves autonomously according to the pre-programmed strategy. The user-interface program also contains a robot graphic simulator that is used to produce and verify the robot's gait motion. In our walking algorithm, the ankle joint is mainly used lot balancing the robot. The experimental results shows that the developed robot can perform statically stable walking on even surface.

  • A mobile robot system is developed which is remotely controlled by a haptic master called ‘PHANTOM’. The mobile robot has 4 ultrasonic sensors and single CCD camera which detects the distance from a mobile robot to obstacles in the environment and sends this information to a haptic master. For more convenient remote control, haptic rendering process is performed like viscosity forces and obstacle avoidance forces. In order to show the effectiveness of the developed system, we experiment that the mobile robot runs through the maze and the time is checked to complete the path of the maze with/without the haptic information. Through this repeated experiments, haptic information proves to be useful for remote control of a mobile robot.
