  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate representativeness of fuel-based emission factors. Twelve light-duty diesel vehicles which meet Euro-3 to 5 legislative emission limits were selected for emission tests. Second-by-second modal emission rates of vehicles were measured on a standard laboratory chassis dynamometer system. An off-cycle driving cycle was developed as a representative Korean real-world on-road driving cycle. Fuel-based emission factors were developed for short trip segments that involved in the selected driving cycle. Each segment was defined to have unit travel distance, which is 1 km, and characterized by its average speed and Relative Positive Acceleration (RPA). Fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factors demonstrate relatively good representativeness in terms of vehicle operation conditions. $NO_x$ emission factors are estimated to be within ${\pm}20%$ of area-wide emission factor under more than 40% of total driving situations. This result implies that the fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factor could be practically implemented into the on-road emission management strategies, such as a remote sensing device (RSD). High emitting vehicles as well as high emitting operating conditions heavily affect on the mean values and distributions of CO and THC emission factors. Few high emitting conditions are pulling up the mean value and biasing the distributions, which weaken representativeness of fuel-based CO and THC emission factors.

  • The characteristics of SST variability in the East Sea are analyzed using NOAA/AVHRR weekly SST data with about $0.18^{\circ}{\times}0.18^{\circ}$ resolution ($1981{\sim}2000$) and reconstructed historical monthly SST data with $2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$ resolution $(1950{\sim}1998)$. The distinct feature of wintertime SST is high variability in the western and eastern parts of $38^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$ latitudinal band, which are the northern boundary of warm current in the East Sea during winter. However, summertime SST exhibits variability with similar magnitude in the entire region of the East Sea. The analysis of remote correlation also shows that SST in the East Sea is closely correlated with that in the region of Kuroshio in winter, but in summer is related with that in the western and eastern regions of the same latitudes. From these results it is postulated that the SST variability in the East Sea may be related with the variations of East Korean Warm Current and Tsushima Warm Current in winter, but in summer probably with the variations of atmospheric components. In the analysis of ENSO related SST anomaly, a significant negative correlation between SST anomalies in the East Sea and SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific is found in the months of August-October (ASO). The SST in the ASO period shows more significant cooling in E1 $Ni\~{n}o$ events than warming in La $Ni\~{n}a$ events. Also, the regional analysis shows by the Student's t-test that the negative SST anomalies in the E1 $Ni\~{n}o$ events are more significant in the southwestern part of the East Sea.

  • Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights are compared to tide gauge sea levels in the South Indian Ocean in the period of January 1993 to December 1995. A user's handbook (AVISO) for processing sea surface height data was used in this study. Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights were obtained from satellite data at the proximity of tide gauge stations. These data were reproduced by a linear interpolation with the interval of 10 days and were processed by the Gaussian filter with a 60-day window. The tide gauge sea levels were obtained in the same manner as the satellite data. The main results on RMS (Root-Mean-Square) and CORR (CORRelation coefficient) in our study were shown as follows: 1) on the characteristics between two data (in-situ and model data), the results (RMS=2.96 cm & CORR=$92\%$ in the Amsterdam plateau, and RMS=3.45 cm & CORR=$59\%$ in the Crozet plateau) of the comparison of Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights with tide gauge sea levels, which was calculated by in-situ data of obsewed station showed generally low values in RMS and high values in CORR against to the results (RMS=4.69 cm & CORR=$79\%$ in the Amsterdam plateau, and RMS= 6.29 cm & CORR= $49\%$ in the Crozet plateau) of the comparison of Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights with tide gauge sea levels, which was calculated by model data of ECMWF (European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting), and 2) on the characteristics between two areas (Kerguelen plateau and island), the results (RMS=3.28 cm & CORR= $54\%$ in the Kerguelen plateau) of open sea area showed low values in RMS and high values in CORR against to the results (RMS= 5.71 cm & CORR=$38\%$ in the Kerguelen island) of coast area, respectively.

  • DaVinci processors are popular media processors for implementing embedded multimedia applications. They support dual core architecture: ARM9 core for video I/O handling as well as system management and peripheral handling, and DSP C64+ core for effective digital signal processing. In this paper, we propose our efforts for optimal implementation of object tracking algorithm in DaVinci-based smart camera which is being designed and implemented by our laboratory. The smart camera in this paper is supposed to support object detection, object tracking, object classification and detection of intrusion into surveillance regions and sending the detection event to remote clients using IP protocol. Object tracking algorithm is computationally expensive since it needs to process several procedures such as foreground mask extraction, foreground mask correction, connected component labeling, blob region calculation, object prediction, and etc. which require large amount of computation times. Thus, if it is not implemented optimally in Davinci-based processors, one cannot expect real-time performance of the smart camera.

  • Atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone $(O_3)$ play the important trace gases in tropospheric chemistry, through its concentration in the troposphere directly influences the concentrations of tropospheric hydroxyl (OH). Understanding the impact of CO and $O_3$ on the global tropospheric chemistry requires measurements of the global atmospheric CO and $O_3$ distributions. This study focuses on the identification of CO and O3 released in the East Asia between March 2000 and February 2004. During the period, the MOPITT instrument onboard the Earth Observing System (EOS)-Terra platform collected extensive measurement of CO. So we have used MOPITT data at 700hPa to analyze seasonal distribution of CO concentration. And the O3 measurements for this study were Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and Dobson spectrometer provided NASA/GSFC and Yonsei University, Korea. During springtime, the CO and O3 concentrations were increased over East Asia for April, May, and June. CO and O3 transport and chemistry in the springtime in East Asia are studied by use of the HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model.

  • The use of an obturator prosthesis for patients with maxillary defects is a common treatment method to improve their oral function and achieve esthetic satisfaction. However, due to various difficulties and complexities, conventional methods for fabricating dental obturators continue to pose a challenge for dentists and patients, as well as laboratory technicians. CAD-CAM technologies may make it simple to fabricate maxillofacial prostheses including hollow obturators, which could improve comfort for clinicians by reducing burdensome manipulations. In addition, patients without a specialist in their vicinity will be able to be treated via cooperation between a nearby general practitioner and a distant prosthodontist. The aim of this clinical report is to investigate the possibility of using digitally fabricated maxillofacial prostheses that can be designed in one location, and manufactured in another in clinical situations.

  • Enhancing the positioning precision is the primary pursuit of GPS users. To achieve this goal, most studies have focused on the relationship between GPS receiver clock errors and GPS positioning precision. This study utilizes undifferentiated phase data to calculate GPS clock errors and to compare with the frequency of cesium clock directly, thus verifying estimated clock errors by the method used in this paper. The relative frequency offsets from this paper and from National Standard Time and Frequency Laboratory of Taiwan match to $1.5{\times}10^{12}$ in the frequency instability, suggesting that the proposed technique has reached a certain level of quality. The built-in quartz clocks in the GPS receivers yield relative frequency offsets that are 3 to 4 orders higher than those of rubidium clocks. The frequency instability of the quartz clocks is on average two orders worse than that of the rubidium clock. Using the rubidium clock instead of the quartz clock, the horizontal and vertical positioning accuracies were improved by 26-78% (0.6-3.6 mm) and 20-34% (1.3-3.0 mm), respectively, for a short baseline. These improvements are 7-25% (0.3-1.7 mm) and 11% (1.7 mm) for a long baseline. Our experiments show that the frequency instability of clock, rather than relative frequency offset, is the governing factor of positioning accuracy.

  • Objective: The extensive breeding of commercial chickens has led to a sharp decrease in the resources of many indigenous chickens, especially the indigenous chickens in the southeastern coastal region, which are on the verge of extinction, and the indigenous chickens in the northwestern region of China, which are also at risk. However, there are few reports on the evaluation of genetic diversity and conservation of genetic resources of indigenous chickens in remote areas in the Northwest of China. Methods: In the present study, the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship of six indigenous chickens from different regions were studied based on variation in mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop), and the degree of introgression from commercial breeds into these chickens was determined by the amount of haplotype sharing between indigenous and commercial breeds. Results: Twenty-five polymorphic sites and 25 haplotypes were detected in 206 individuals. Principal component analysis showed that the Jingning chicken had the highest genetic diversity among the six indigenous chickens. According to the degree of introgression, the six indigenous breeds may be involved in haplotype sharing with commercial breeds, and the introgression from commercial chickens into the Haidong chicken is the most serious. Conclusion: The genetic uniqueness of indigenous chickens has been eroded, so it is necessary to consider the protection of their genetic resources. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the six indigenous chickens have two major matrilineal origins: one from Yunnan or its surrounding areas in China and the other from the Indian subcontinent.

  • The reflectance of chlorophyll was measured using UV-VIS spectrophotometer with the reflectance integrator in the laboratory in order to define its spectral characteristics. Sharp peaks appear at around 485nm and 655nm due to fluorescence and scattering, and the reflectance of chlorophyll increases at 580nm. With the increase in the chlorophyll concentration, the reflectance also increases. We have applied TM data to the reflectance spectrum of chlorophyll and have developed two formula with which one can estimate the chlorophyll concetration. Satellite re sensing, with its synoptic overage, is used to obtain the chlorophyll concentration in Daecheong reservoir. The approach involved acquisition of water quality samples front boat simultaneous with Landsat 5 satellite overpass. The remotely-sensed data and the ground truth data were obtained oil 20 June 1995 and on 18 March 1996. Regression models have been developed between the chlorophyll concentration and Landsat Thematic Mapper digital data. As the regression model was determined based on the correlation coefficient which was higher than 0.7 and the spectral characteristics of chlorophyll, and we have applied it to the entire study area to genelate a distribution map of trophic state. According to the trophic state map made based upon Aizaki's TSI and chlorophyll a concentration, the area where Okchun stream was flowing into was shown to be polluted the most all over the Daechung reservoir by showing an eutrophic state in June 1995 and a mesotrophic state in March 1996.

  • Route projection of forest road involves several constraints ranging from construction cost to environmental impacts. This study is designed to assess the capability of computer-assisted map analysis techniques for deriving several alternatives of forest road planning. Three cartographic models are presented to address the limit of slope, soil erosion, and aesthetic value in designing forest roads over a relatively small size of mountainous forest. Primary spatial analysis techniques used are distance measurements and connectivity analysis. The fundamental approach used was to generate a set of friction maps in which each friction map represents a combined restriction for a forest road projection. Products of the spatial analysis are compared by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results demonstrate that computer-assisted map analysis has a potential to solve rather complex problems of forest road planning by providing several alternatives effectively.
