The rate of softening is an important factor to determine whether the failure occurs along localized shear band or in a more diffused manner. In this paper, strength loss and softening rate effect depending on sensitivity are investigated for weakly cemented clays, for both artificially cemented high plasticity San Francisco Bay Mud and low plasticity Yolo Loam. Destructuration and softening behavior for weakly cemented sensitive clays are demonstrated and discussed through multiple vane shear tests. Artificial sensitive clays are prepared in the laboratory for physical modeling or constitutive modeling using a small amount of cement (2 to 5%) with controlled initial water content and curing period. Through test results, shear band thickness is theoretically computed and the rate of softening is represented as a newly introduced parameter, ${\omega}_{80%}$. Consequently, it is found that the softening rate increases with sensitivity for weakly cemented sensitive clays. Increased softening rate represents faster strength loss to residual state and faster minimizing of shear band thickness. Uncemented clay has very low softening rate to 80% strength drop. Also, it is found that higher brittleness index ($I_b$) relatively shows faster softening rate. The result would be beneficial to study of physical modeling for sensitive clays in that artificially constructed high sensitivity (up to $S_t=23$) clay exhibits faster strain softening, which results in localized shear band failure once it is remolded.
In this study, a constant rate of strain test (CRS) and oedometer test was performed in order to study the consolidation characteristics to the liquid limit using a re-shaped clay which was preconsolidated at a constant pressure. Consolidation samples were made of kaolinite which was mixed with bentonite of 6 %, 9 %, 12 % and 15 % of it by weight and the test value of liquid limit of samples were appeared in 77 %, 84 %, 88 % and 91 % respectively. And then consolidation samples which were agitated sufficiently adding distilled water 2 times of liquid limit were preconsolidated in the condition of a constant pressure of 0.2 MPa. The oedometer test which is commonly used recently and the consolidation test of constant rate of strain which were applied in 0.001 %/min, 0.004 %/min, 0.01 %/min rate of strain according to ASTM, D4186-82 were performed and the preconsolidation pressures were compared and analyzed at 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure. As a result, in the case of low value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the high speed strain rate, and in the case of high value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the low speed strain rate.

After clay particles have been sedimented isotropically, the clay deposits have been consolidated under $K_0$-stress system. Therefore, in order to predict the behavior in-situ of normally consolidated clays, the effect of $K_0$-consolidation should be considered. A series of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both $K_0$-and isotropic stress systems and the effect of $K_0$-consolidation was investigated. $K_0$-consolidation has much effect on the deviator stress, especially at initial deformation stage of consolidated-undrained tests, but has little effect on the principal effective stress ratio. Thus, the undrained strength behavior of $K_0$-consolidated samples can not be predicted from isotropically consolidated test data. However, the failure envelop, provided by the maximum principal effective stress ratio failure criterion, is unique and curved.
As the permeability of soil adjacent to the vertical drain has a decisive effect on the rate of consolidation, the permeability of smear zone governs the rate of radial consolidation of PVD installed soft ground. In this study, a method was suggested to analyze the radial consolidation, based on consolidation characteristics of remolded clay, and was used to evaluate the consolidation of soft clay layer in Busan Newport. The suggested method provides more reliable consolidation behaviors than the conventional approach, which is based on the consolidation characteristics of undisturbed clay. The suggested method is also observed to be relatively insensitive to the uncertainty of $k_h/k_s$. The comparison between the analysis and field measurement revealed that the suggested method provided a reliable prediction on the rate of consolidation of PVD installed Busan new port clay and that an appropriate extent of smear zone was evaluated as about $3d_w$ by back analysis.
A series of laboratory tests, which can show how different curing conditions influence an aging effect on clay, were carried out for the clay samples collected in the area of Kwangyang Bay and Mokpo. Clay samples were remolded and reconsolidated under three different curing temperatures (20, 50, and 80 degree Celsius) and low different curing durations (1, 7, 14, and 40 days). To find out an aging effect and geotechnical characteristics between undisturbed samples and reconsolidated samples, laboratory tests, consisting of uniaxial compression tests, CU triaxial test, and consolidation tests, were preformed. Results showed that the compression index ratio is very useful factor to indicate the aging effect of natural clays. Also geotechnical characteristics of clays reconsolidated at high temperature were very similar to those of undisturbed clays. Finally, curing temperature and curing duration influenced an aging effect on clays. The best curing condition was 80 degree Celsius and 27 days.

In this study, a series of triaxial compression tests(CU) were performed with artificially remolded sand-pack-clay and sand-clay composite soils at 10% and 20% replacement ratio to compare the shear strength and behavior characteristics between sand compaction pile and pack pile. From the test results, the shear strength of the pack pile is much higher than the that of the sand compaction pile.

This study aims at investigating the undrained behavior of the normally consolidated clay foundation using single hardening constitutive model based on elasticity and plasticity theories. The specimen employed was sampled at Mooan near the down stream of Young San river and remolded into consolidation apparatus. 11 soil parameters for the model was determined from simple tests such as isotropic compression and consolidation undrained triaxial compression tests. FEM program to predict the undrained behavior of the foundation was developed and back analysis was performed to verify prediction ability of the FEM program. Finally plate load test on the 2-dimensional model foundation was carried out in order to compare numerical analysis and observed values on the foundation.

The study is closely relevant to Lade's single work hardening model. This model has been shown to have good applicability to cohesive soils. However the validation of this model on the clayey soils has not been satisfactorily reported. To scrutinize the applicability of this model on clayey foundation the laboratory tests for Kwangyang clayey soils were performed using the improved cubical triaxial test apparatus designed originally by Lade. A computer program was developed by which soil parameters for the single work-hardening model can be rationally determined by deleting some dispersed test data generated usually at the initial stage of laboratory tests. And using the program numerical analysis of the cubical clayey specimens using intermediate principal stress was carried out and a good agreement between observed values and numerical results was found.
The object of this paper is to study the general characteristics of overconsolidated silty clays subjected to repeated loading. The samples are first remolded. overconsolidated and a series of strain - controlled triaxial repeated tests are carried out. Generally the relationship of deviator stress - axial strain of overconsolidated clay is similar in pattern to the normally consolidated clay under single load. But the behavior of the pore water pressure build up in the sample subjected to repeated loading is dependent upon the consolidation history and the level of repeated stress. Therefore through the series of the tests, the characteristics of stress -strain relationship of soils which are differentlly overconsolidated are investigated, analysed and then compared with each soils. And also, from the relationship of test results, the strength and strain characteristics of soils are obierved. The equilibrium lines which presents the critical repeated stress and equilibrium state in the sample under repeated loading, are often straight, but may be curved. And the tendency of the equilibrium lines is observed as to the variation of overconsolidation ratio.
Recently, the case to construct the structure on the soft clayey ground has increased and in order to the reduction of the cost of construction and maintenance on the social infrastructure facilities we have been trying to improve the soft clayey ground using the existing methods such as the pre-loading method and the vertical drain method. Like this, when various ground improvement methods are applied on the soft clayey ground, a long-term consolidation settlement will be key issue due to low permeability coefficient of cohesive soil. According to existing research results that relate to the consolidation settlement, the loading periods for existing the standard consolidation test (Oedometer test) to obtain the consolidation parameters are needed for minimum ten days or more. Therefore, in this study, the standard consolidation test (24 hours step-loading) and constant strain rate consolidation test changed by strain rate was performed using the remolded marine clay on Gwangyang bay composed of a soft clayey ground of the south-west coast. From the laboratory test results, the characteristics of compression, strain-effective stress relations by constant strain rate and the variation characteristic of the pore water pressure by different of loading speed and the relation between consolidation parameters and constant strain rate are compared and analyzed.
