  • Along with rapid industrial development, toxic chemicals have been discharged extensively into the environment. Many of them have flowed into the soil which is final acceptor of environmental pollutants. As a result, they have deteriorated soil and groundwater environment. Once the soil and groundwater were contaminated by pollutants, these media can not be easily restored without artificial remediation. Foreign countries which accomplished earlier industrialization compared to our country have invested enormous capital for the remediation of contaminated sites and the development of relevant technology. In our country the reserch on the development of remediation technology has been conducted for several years, but it is still in its initial stage. This report represents remediation technologies, their adaptability and clean up procedure etc. which are being used for the managenent of contaminated site in advanced countries.

  • Risk and exposure assessment for subsurface environment is very important for both aspects of health and environmental protection as well as making decision of remedial goal for engineering activities. Exposure due to hazardous chemicals in the subsurface environment is essential to assess risk lev121 to individual person, especially from soil and groundwater environmental media. In this paper, the status of soil and groundwater contamination is presented to discuss on the problem for environmental risk assessment. The methodologies of fate and exposure models are also discussed by conducting the case studies of exposure assessment for heavy metals, organic compounds, and dioxin compounds. In addition, the structure of exposure models and available data for model calculation are examined to make clear more realistic exposure scenarios and the application to the practical environmental issues. Three kinds of advanced remediation techniques for soil and groundwater contamination are described in this paper, The most practical method for VOCs is the bio-remediation technique in which biological process due to consortium of microorganisms can be applied. For more effective remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals we have adopted the soil flushing technique and clean-up system using electro-kinetic method. We have also developed the advanced techniques of geo-melting method for soil contaminated by DXNs and PCB compounds. These techniques are planed to introduce and to apply for a lot of contaminated sites in Japan.

  • Theories and concepts emerging in new media environment are influencing the field of current spatial design. Art and technology have always coexisted, not but they are differentiated in two parts. They show new communicational paradigm in terms of supplementary position each other. The fact that examining the expression method and the communicational structure of today's new media art will be an analytical tool which analyzes the concepts of contemporary spatial design. For this, we attempt to use the Bolter and Gusin's remediation theory as analytical tool. First of all, we consider its theoretical aspects, and then, classify them according to the creation method, and investigate the characteristics of expression according to their types. We prepared an framework of analysis using the Remediation theory and its traits. We reviewed the relations between new media and spaces concerning remediation. After researching, we could analyze the cognitive aspects between new media and spaces as immediacy, and recognize the operational aspects of visual image as hypermediacy. Through the analysis, we could recognize the traits that digital environmental simulacres, sense of telepresence, and non-linear hypermediacy etc. remediate with repeating of mediation of mediation.

  • Cadmium is a class 1 carcinogen classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and has a high potential for leaching into groundwater. Therefore, it is necessary to address cadmium contamination by employing adequate treatment methodologies. Although various methods have been suggested to reduce cadmium in groundwater, their applications often suffer from various limitation arising from heterogeneous field conditions and technical difficulties. In this work, several in-situ technologies to treat cadmium contaminated groundwater were reviewed and discussed by separately addressing physicochemical, chemical and biological methods. In particular, the optimum cadmium remediation strategies that involve physical removal of source area → physicochemical and chemical remediation → biological remediation were proposed by considering reduction efficiency, adsorption rate, economic feasibility and ease of field application in groundwater.

  • This paper presents preliminary laboratory investigations on the electrokinetic (EK) remediation coupled with permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system. Atomizing slag was adopted as a PRB reactive material for remediation of groundwater contaminated with inorganic and/or organic substances. A series of laboratory experiments were performed with variable conditions such as (i) type of contaminant, (ii) applied electric field strength, (iii) processing time, and (iv) the application of PRB system. From the preliminary investigations, the coupled technology of EK with PRB system would be effective to remediate contaminated grounds without the extraction of pollutants from subsurface due to the reactions between the reactive materials and contaminants.

  • Remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated organics, nitro aromatics, and heavy metals using zero valent iron (ZVI) filings has paid considerable attention in recent years. When the contaminants of high concentration leaked abundantly in subsurface environment, permeable reactive barrier technology using iron filing is taken a long time for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, The problem of contaminant shock is able to be solved using surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium, HDTMA) modified bentonite (SMB) as immobilizing material. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop the combined remediation technology using conventional permeable reactive and immobilizing barrier for the enhanced decontamination of chlorinated compounds. Four column experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with Ottawa sand, iron filing, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE reduction rates with sand/iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four column due to dechlorination of TCE by iron filing and sorption of TCE by SMB.

  • On site, In situ soil remediation technologies are very important among the remediation technologies and in general efficiency of these technologies are turned to site characterization and environmental condition. specially using of only one technology has so many limitation factors. for example, existing state of tailing and channeling and so on. actually, filled land have high concentration cation exchange capacity because of existence in abundance soil organic matter. Therefore we used various on site in Situ technologies by phase for overcome the limitation factors. Target site is petroleum (diesel) impacted filled land and using technologies are SVE(Soil Vapor Extraction), BV(Bioventing), Bioremediation, Soil flushing, Chemical oxidation.

  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hydrophobic and most are practically insoluble in water contributing to their persistence in the environment. In addition, most exist in strongly adsorbed forms when they are introduced into the soils. Their removal efficiency can be limited in low mass transfer phases, such as PAHs-contaminated soils, because most chemical and biological remediation technologies require transfer from NAPs (Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids) into the mobile phase. • We experimented on growth in light and production of hydrogen and organic matters in dark fermentation by using C. reinhardtii. In the light, growth rate of C. reinhardtii following $CO_2$ fixation was proportional to consumption rate of nitrogen source. And the starch in cell was accumulated more when the period of culture was lengthened more. But the accumulation rate of starch in cell was decreased when the growth rate of cell become dull. In the dark fermentation, the production volume and production rate of hydrogen were the highest value in the mid exponential state among other states. The utilization efficiency of substrate was better in the early exponential state than other states. In production of organic matters, acetic acid didn't change remarkably and ethanol showed the highest value in early exponential state.
