The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptation of light cured glass ionomer cement and composite resin using all- etch technique to tooth structure. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 10 extracted human premolar teeth with cementum margin and teeth were randomly assigned 2 groups of 5 teeth each. The cavities of glass ionomer cement group were filled with the light cured glass ionomer cement(Fuji II LC) and the cavities of composite resin group were filled with the light cured composite resion(P - 50) using all- etch technique with All- Bond 2. The restored teeth were stored in 100 % relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. And then, the roots of the teeth were removed with the tapered fissure bur and the remaining crowns were sectioned occlusogingivally through the center of restorations. Adaptation at tooth - restoration interface were assessed occlusally, gingivally, and axially by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. The adaptation to enamel walls of composite resin restorations using All - Bond 2 showed better than glass ionomer restorations. 2. The adaptation to gingival and axial walls of glass ionomer restorations showed better than composite resin restorations using All - Bond 2. 3. In both groups, occlusal margins of restorations showed better adaptation than gingival margins of restorations.
A rationale and compendium of treatment for a specific situation of cases have been presented. It consists of a cast metal bar called a truss bar joint removable denture which is soldered to crowns and dowel core on a few remaining teeth, i.e., cuspids or bicuspids. This system gives additional support and retention to the individual teeth and makes possible a more stable removable denture. It is my opinion that the prognosis of the chosen cases may be obtained Successful results when applied on the teeth of less favorable crown-root ratio.
After a vital pulpotomy in human permanent teeth, the responses of the remaining pulp tissue under formocresol was studied histologically. The class I cavity was prepared on the teeth and the pulp was amputated. Formocresol was placed over the amputated tissue and the cavity was sealed with zinc phosphate cement and amalgam. The teeth were extracted after 1, and 3 weeks following the operation and were decalcified, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and losin. Microscopic examination reveals as follows; I. Healing of the pulp at the amputated site did not occur in the pulps treated with formocresol. 2. At one week the pulps were normal except only slight inflammatory reaction. 3. At three weeks, the pulps showed the most serious inflammation, bleeding and necrotic state.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of moisture on apical sealing properties of root canal. Fifty five single rooted human teeth were selected from maxillary and mandibular teeth. After removing crown portion at the cemento-enamel junction, all teeth were routinely prepared with step-back method. And then, the canals were dried with paper point and the teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups of 15 teeth each, and remaining 10 teeth were used as positive and negative control teeth : Group 1 were irrigated with 1ml of 95% alcohol and dried with air and paper point. Group 2 and 3 were intentionally contaminated with 0.05ml of 3.5% NaOCl or saliva, respectively. All the teeth were obturated with sealapex and gutta percha cone by lateral condensation technique, and covered with two coat of nail varnish after 48 hours of obturation. The teeth were immersed in india ink for 1 week and cleaned with methyl salicylate and then the degree of dye penetration were measured with stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA. The results were as follows : 1. All experimental groups showed varying degrees of dye penetration, and the mean degree of dye penetration was 0.1mm to 0.7mm. 2. Saliva contamination group(group 3) showed the highest amount of dye penetration, followed by NaOCl contamination group, then alcohol dried group, but there was no significant difference among three experimental groups. * This results suggest that there was no significant differences of apical leakage after canal obturation between alcohol dried canal and moisture present canals and the use of alcohol instead of paper point is unnecessary to dry the canals prior to canal filling. But other factors such as bacterial contamination and sealer discoloration by moisture must be considered in application of this results to clinical practice.
Eating supports to gain energy and nutrition and improves quality of life. Ageing affects the food intake ability due to loss of natural teeth and the progressive muscle degeneration. Our objective was to investigate how the food intake ability (FIA) and the remaining teeth could influence on oral health related quality of life in the elderly. This study was performed with 503 elderly subjects living in Daejeon, Korea. The questionnaire with the FIA with 30 Korean food and Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) and oral examination were surveyed. The five groups according to cluster analysis of FIA had the different numbers of remaining teeth and functional posterior teeth with opposing teeth or prosthesis significantly: group 1, $21.78{\pm}8.27$ and $2.80{\pm}2.63$; group 2, $16.75{\pm}7.87$ and $2.16{\pm}2.44$; group 3, $14.68{\pm}9.77$ and $1.73{\pm}2.30$; group 4, $9.93{\pm}8.13$ and $0.78{\pm}1.68$; group 5, $10.18{\pm}8.37$ and $0.51{\pm}1.22$. The more foods the subjects could masticate, the better oral health related quality of life they had. The medium FIA, soft FIA and the number of remaining teeth could explain 46% of OHIP-14, but hard FIA could not in the multiple regression model. We suggested to develop the oral health program for the elderly to be able to eat the food with medium physical property at least be helpful to improve oral health related quality of life.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate interaction of restorative method according to amount of remaining clinical crown length. For the study, sixty healthy mandibular premolars with no dental caries were chosen. Specimens with clinical crown length of 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm above the cemento-enamel junction(CEJ) were prepared and root canal treatment was conducted using Ni-Ti rotaty files. Thirty specimens were restored with $LuxaCore^{(R)}$ and thirty were restored with casting posts. All specimens were restored with full coverage crowns and the fracture strength was teseted with the MTS universal testing marchine. The fracture pattern was observed by measuring the distance between CEJ and fracture line. From the results above, the fracture strength seems to be influenced more by amount of remaining clinical crown length than restorative method. Good prognosis could be expected, when more than 2mm of clinical crown length is retained. In the future, the further studies on restorative method, to increase fracture strength of teeth will be necessary.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: 50 postmenoposal women between the age of 41.8 and 78.5 were classified as normal and osteoporosis groups according to the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae. Panoramic radiographs were taken. Age, body mass index, remaining mandibular teeth, mandibular cortical thickness and morphology, and fractal dimensions at periapical areas of mandibular first molars were evaluated to differentiate the two groups. Results: The age of osteoporotic group was statistically significantly higher than that of normal group (p<0.05), but not the body mass index or number of remaining mandibular teeth. The mean fractal dimension of osteoporotic group was $1.391{\pm}0.085$, and was significantly lower than that of the normal group, which was $1.523{\pm}0.725$ (p<0.01). Thick mandibular cortical thickness was common in normal group, whereas thin or very thin mandibular cortical thickness was common in osteoporotic group and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). C2 pattern was common in normal group followed by C1, whereas C2 was common in osteoporotic group followed by C3. The difference was statistically significant (p< 0.0 1). Conclusion: Age, mandibular cortical thickness and shape, fractal dimension on panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis.
The purpose of present study was to compare the speed of coronal leakage before and after post space preparation using Streptococcus mutans. Forty straight extracted human teeth were selected. The crowns were removed to a uniform remaining root length 14 mm. Canals were enlarged by 06 taper $Profiles^{(R)}$ to a size $\#40$ as a master apical file. And these were filled with gutta percha point and $Tubuliseal^{(R)}$ sealer, using continuous wave technique. Groupings are as follows. Group 1 - These teeth were obturated without sealer. Group 2 - These teeth were obturated and covered the surface of the root completely with sticky wax. Group 3 - These teeth were obturated. Group 4 - These teeth were obturated and prepared for post space remaining 5 mm of gutta percha. The teeth were suspended in plastic tubes. The upper chamber received the bacterial suspension everyday to simulate clinical situation. The lower chamber consisted of BHI added Andrade's indicator. All roots in the positive control group (Group 1) turned yellow within 24 h and those of negative control group (Group 2) remained red throughout the experimental period (70 days) The samples of group 3 were contaminated within an average of 27.2 days. The samples of group 4 were contaminated within an average of 15.7 days, ranging from 9 to 22 days. There was significant difference between group 3 and group 4 statistically (p < 0.05).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pulpal responses of S. mutans (6715, serotype A) in relation to the remaining dentin thickness. The material was consisted of 72 teeth from 6 dogs. Cl. V cavities were prepared into 2 different thickness (0.5mm, 1.0mm) of remaining dentin. In the control groups, the cavities were filled with filter paper of broth, tin foil, and IRM$^{(R)}$ cement. In the experimental groups, the cavities were filled with filter paper of S. mutans, filter paper of broth, tin foil, and IRM$^{(R)}$ cement. The intervals of observation period were 1 week, 3 weeks, and 8 weeks respectively after the experiment. The specimens were fixed with 10% formalin and decalcified in 5% nitric acid. All specimens were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and examined histopathologically under the microscope. The results were as follows. 1. The changes and congestion of odontoblastic layers were more frequent and lasting in the control group of 0.5mm than in that of 1.0mm remaining dentin thickness. 2. There was no characteristic difference between the control group of 1.0mm and the experimental group of 1.0mm in all pulp responses. 3. Acute and chronic inflammatory cells were seen in the experimental group of 0.5mm, but not seen in the control group of 0.5mm.
PURPOSE. The objective of this literature review was to analyze the cumulative survival rates (CSRs) of rigid and non-rigid double-crown-retained removable dental prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Screening of the literature published from January 1995 to December 2019 was performed by using electronic data base (Pubmed) and manual search. The CSRs of rigid and non-rigid double crown removable dental prostheses were investigated. RESULTS. A total of 403 articles were reviewed and 56 relevant articles of them were selected. Subsequently, 25 articles were included for data extraction. These articles were classified according to rigid and non-rigid type double crowns and further subdivided into teeth, implants, and teeth-implant combination types. The CSRs of rigid type double crown ranged from 68.9% to 95.1% of 5 to 10 years in tooth abutments, 94.02% to 100% over a 3-year mean observation periods in implant abutments, and 81.8% to 97.6% in tooth-implant combination. Non-rigid type double crowns had various CSR ranges from 34% to 94% maximum during 10 years observation in teeth abutment. The CSRs of non-rigid type had over 98% in implant abutments, and ranged from 85% to 100% in tooth-implant combination. CONCLUSION. The CSRs of double crowns varies according to types. With accurate evaluation of the remaining teeth and plan of the strategic implant placement, it could be successful treatment alternatives for partially or completely edentulous patients.
