The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic capacity of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers before and after applying a seismic retrofitting method using stainless steel wire mesh. Total nine circular section RC piers were constructed. Different lap splice longitudinal reinforcement details were adapted for four specimens and various types of stainless steel wire mesh were applied for the remaining five specimens. Harmonic cyclic lateral load was applied on each specimen under a constant axial load. The test results indicated that the existing circular piers have low seismic capacity while the stainless steel wire mesh retrofitting method improves the seismic capacity considerably. In addition, test results revealed that the circular section piers could have a considerable amount of ductility if longitudinal bars are not lap-spliced in potential plastic hinge zone. Based on this experimental study it could be concluded that the seismic performance, that is ductility and energy absorption capacity, of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers would be increased by applying the stainless steel wire mesh seismic retrofitting method.
Most of steel structures in various industries are subjected to corrosion due to environmental exposure. Corrosion damage is a serious problem for these structures which may reduce their carrying capacity. These aging structures require maintenance and in many cases, replacement. The goal of this research is to consider the effects of corrosion by developing a model that estimates corrosion loss as a function of exposure time. The model is formulated based on average measured thickness data collected from three severely corroded I-beams (nearly 30 years old). Since corrosion is a time-dependent parameter. Analyses were performed to calculate the lateral buckling capacity of steel beam in terms of exposure time. Minimum curves have been developed for assessment of the remaining lateral buckling capacity of ordinary I-beams based on the loss of thicknesses in terms of exposure time. These minimum curves can be used by practicing engineers for better estimates on the service life of corrosion damaged steel beams.
Scour vulnerability evaluation for shallow foundations was performed to assure bridge safety against scour in the national capital region. The case studies for 26 shallow foundations consisted of site investigation including boring test, bridge scour analysis for the design flood, bearing capacity evaluation of the bridge foundation before and after scour, and comprehensive evaluation of bridge scour vulnerability. Bridge scour vulnerability was determined based on the interdisciplinary concept considering predicted scour depth for the design floods and bearing capacity of foundation as well as dimensions of foundation. Nine of 26 shallow foundations showed the potential future vulnerability to scour with significant decrease in the bearing capacity of foundations due to scour and the remaining 17 were expected to maintain their stability against scour.
In the present study, optimization of throttle margin for high pressure turbine to be retrofitted or partially modified for power uprating or life extension in nuclear power plant, has been performed to increase the electrical output. Throttle margin for high pressure turbine is required to maintain all the time the rated power by opening more of governor valves whenever inlet pressure is decreased due to the tube plugging of steam generator. If throttle margin of high pressure turbine is too much compared to remaining lifetime, loss of electrical output due to pressure drop of governor valves is inevitable. On the contrary, if it is too little, the rated power operation can not be accomplished when inlet pressure of high pressure turbine is dropped after many years operation. So, throttle margin for high pressure turbine in nuclear power plant is compromised considering for the degradation of steam generator, governor valve capacity, manufacturing tolerance of high pressure turbine, future plan of power uprating, and remaining lifetime of power plant.
This paper develops the theory for a fault-tolerant, permanent magnet biased, homopolar magnetic bearing. If some of the coils or power amplifiers suddenly fail, the remaining coil currents change via a novel distribution matrix such that the same magnetic forces are maintained before and after failure. Lagrange multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrix that maximizes the load capacity of the failed bearing. Some numerical examples of distribution matrices are provided to illustrate the theory. Simulations show that very much the same dynamic responses (orbits or displacements) are maintained throughout failure events (up to any combination of 3 coils failed for the 6 pole magnetic bearing) while currents and fluxes change significantly. The overall load capacity of the bearing actuator is reduced as coils fail. The same magnetic forces are then preserved up to the load capacity of the failed.
The k most vital arcs (k-MVA) of a maximum flow problem is defined as those k arcs whose simultaneous removal from the network causes the greatest decrease in the throughput capability of the remaining system between a specified pair of nodes. In this study, we present a method for determining all the k-MVA in maximum flow problem using a minimal cardinality cut algorithm and k-th minimal cut ranking algorithm. For ranking cardinality cuts, we use Hamacher's ranking algorithm for cut capacity and by comparing present residual capacity of cardinality cut with expected residual capacity of next cardinality cut, we also present termination condition for this algorithm. While the previous methods cannot find all the alternatives for this problem, a method presented here has advantage of determining all the k-MVA.
The deterioration of RC deck slabs has been a serious problem and high portion of budget has been a spent for repair and strengthening of deck slab. The concrete deck slabs are subject to direct application of vehicle loading and accumulation of fatigue damage. Besides, various environmental causes. In this paper, an probabilistic study is carried out to predict exact load effects and structural capacity of deck slab during its service life, and estimate an appropriate remaining life of deck slab. To achieve this purpose the live load model is developed using by influence line including deterioration of deck slab, and deterioration model of bridge deck slab is developed. In addition, the fatigue life of reinforced concrete deck slabs considering corrosion of reinforcement are estimated based on experimental formula. This study will help rational decisions for the management and repair of reinforced concrete deck slabs.
Background and objective: Particulate matter (PM) has a fatal effect on health. There have been many studies on the use of plants such as trees and shrubs as eco-friendly and sustainable biofilter for the removal of PM. In forming more green space, ground cover plants play an important role in multi-layered planting. This study was conducted to investigate the ability of plants to reduce PM, targeting Korean native ground cover plants with high availability in urban green spaces. Methods: For 4 species of Asteraceae, 4 species of Liliaceae, and 3 species of Rosaceae, one species of plants at a time were placed in an acrylic chamber (800 × 800 × 1000 mm, L × W × H) modeling an indoor space. After the injection of PM, the amount of PM remaining in the chamber over time was investigated. Results: For all three types of PM (PM10, PM2.5, PM1), significant difference occurred in the amount of PM remaining between plant species after 1 hour in the Liliaceae chamber, 3 hours in the Asteraceae chamber, and 5 hours in the Rosaceae chamber. With Liliaceae, the leaf area and the amount of PM remaining in the chamber showed a negative (-) correlation. With the Asteraceae and Rosaceae, there was a weak negative correlation between the leaf area and the amount of PM remaining in the chamber. Conclusion: When using ground cover plants as a biofilter to remove PM, it is considered effective to select a species with a large total leaf area, especially for Liliaceae.
