  • In this study, the model enhancing the safety of reservoirs and reducing the downstream flood damage by reservoirs system operation during abnormal flood was developed. Linear programming was used for the optimal reservoirs system operation during an abnormal flood and fuzzy inference system was introduced to solve the uncertainty problem which is included in hydrological factors like inflow, water level and inflow variation of reservoir operation. The linear programming model determined the optimal reservoir system operation rules and could be used in situation where water demands varies rapidly during the abnormal flood events using fuzzy control technique. In this study, the optimal reservoirs system operation for Andong and Imha reservoirs located in the upper basin of Nakdong river was performed in order that the design flood discharge at Andong city would not be exceeded for the design flood of 100 year and PMF(Probable Maximum Flood). And the model that determines the release according to the downstream flow discharge, the reservoir storage, the inflow and the inflow variation of each reservoir was developed using the optimal system operation result and fuzzy control technique. The developed model consisted of 224 fuzzy rules according to the conditions of Andong reservoir, Imha reservoir and Andong city. And the release from each reservoir could be determined when the current data are used as input data through the developed GUI.

  • This study examined the intensity of the association of factors affecting major burns by statistical analysis for patients injured by the release of chemical hazards. A total of 446 patients were evaluated as chemical injury patients, who had visited the emergency room from 1/Jan/2010 to 31/Dec/2014. The major burn was used as a dependent variable representing the severity of chemical injury. A chi-square test (CST) and binary logistic regression test (BLRA) were used as the statistical analysis method for determining the association between major burns and the independent variables. In CST, female and their presence at an incident scene, multiple site injury were associated with major burn (p<0.05). In BLRA, the presence at an incident scene and spills (comparing explosion), discharge (comparing admission) were associated with major burns (p<0.05). In this study, the presence at an incident scene was the most significant factor concerning major burns. Furthermore, gender and injury number, exposure mechanism (spill comparing explosion), and disposition (discharge comparing admission) were also associated with major burns.

  • Accurate drought outlook and drought monitoring have been preceded recently to mitigate drought damages that further deepen. This study improved the limitations of the previous MSWSI (Modified Surface Water Supply Index) used in Korea and carried out probabilistic drought forecasts based on ensemble technique with the improved MSWSI. This study investigated available hydrometeorological components in Geum river basin and supplemented appropriate components (dam water level, dam release discharge) in addition to the four components (streamflow, groundwater, precipitation, dam inflow) usedin the previous MSWSI to each sub-basin. Although normal distribution was fitted in the previous MSWSI, the most suitable probabilistic distributions to each meteorological component were estimated in this study, including Gumbel distribution for precipitation and streamflow data; 2-parameter log-normal distribution for dam inflow, water level, and release discharge data; 3-parameter log-normal distribution for groundwater. To verify the improved MSWSI results using historical precipitation and streamflow, simulated drought situations were used. Results revealed that the improved MSWSI results were closer to actual drought than previous MSWSI results. The probabilistic forecasts based on ensemble technique with improved MSWSI were performed and evaluated in 2006 and 2014. The accuracy of the improved MSWSI was better than the previous MSWSI. Moreover, the drought index of actual drought was included in ranges of drought forecasts using the improved MSWSI.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the risk-adjusted mortality model using Korean Hospital Discharge Injury data and US National Hospital Discharge Survey data and to suggest some ways to manage hospital mortality rates through comparison of Korea and United States Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratios(HSMR). This study used data mining techniques, decision tree and logistic regression, for developing Korea and United States risk-adjustment model of in-hospital mortality. By comparing Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio(HSMR) with standardized variables, analysis shows the concrete differences between the two countries. While Korean Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio(HSMR) is increasing every year(101.0 in 2006, 101.3 in 2007, 103.3 in 2008), HSMR appeared to be reduced in the United States(102.3 in 2006, 100.7 in 2007, 95.9 in 2008). Korean Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratios(HSMR) by hospital beds were higher than that of the United States. A two-aspect approach to management of hospital mortality rates is suggested; national and hospital levels. The government is to release Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio(HSMR) of large hospitals and to offer consulting on effective hospital mortality management to small and medium hospitals.

  • The quantitative analysis on the pollutants loads (PL) has hardly been carried out and calibration-verification process of the water quality modeling has been conducted under the restricted condition because the observed PL data are not sufficient. In this study, the PLs were measured at the 22 streams and the effluents site in the Masan-Changwon watersheds. The release rates from sediment were also measured at the three points in the Bay. The PLs from the Masan and Changwon cities and from multi-port diffuser(effluents discharge) amount to 80∼90% and 20∼25% of the PL in Chinhae-Masan Bay, respectively. As the amounts of the sediment released pollutants are the same order of the PLs form the watersheds, the pollutants released from the sediment is one of the main factors that might cause the seasonal variation of the water quality, which is degraded in summer and relatively good in winter.

  • The purpose of this study are to develop a realistic methodology to estimate agricultural water supply for rice paddy fields from reservoirs, pumping stations, intake structures, and tube wells on river basin scale. Agricultural water supply from irrigation reservoirs are estimated using the daily or ten day's storage rate data and DIROMmaily Inigation Reservoir Operation Model) model. Estimation of daily water supply from pumping station are carried out from the annual water use with typical water supply patterns. The daily groundwater withdrawn are investigated from the gross water requirement for rice and the design capacity of tube well. And, the daily intake discharge are estimated the minimum amount from the gross water requirement, stream discharge, and the design capacity. During 1993 to 1997, the annual water supply for irrigation in the Han river basin ranged from 569 to 709 million $\textrm{m}^3/yr$, and the mean was estimated to be 640 million $\textrm{m}^3/yr$.

  • North Han River is a very unique type of water system, where Hwacheon, Chuncheon, Soyanggang, Euiam and Cheongpyeong Dams are located consecutively. These dams are operated differently in the amount of discharge and release schedule according to their structure and purpose of use. They have different water quality characteristics depending on external pollutant inflow and internal mixing condition. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between the upper dam and down stream river with respect to water quality indicators, such as water temperature, electrical conductivity, BOD, COD, TN and TP of the North Han River. The similarities and correlations representing the relationship were analyzed by Pearson's correlation r and t-test. The data was taken from the Ministry of Environment's water quality monitoring from 1999 to 2018. The results show that water temperature and electrical conductivity of the dam and river are similar and correlated. However, it turned out that there was no similarities and correlations in BOD, COD, TN and TP that are significantly affected by subaqueous reaction mechanism. The results of this study present the impact of the dam on the water quality of North Han River, which can be used as useful data for management of water quality.

  • Applying the method of quantitative analysis of pycnidiospore from the detached warts produced by the infection of Botryosphaeria dothidea on apple stems, repeated productivity of spores within the detached warts, variations in the amount of spores within the detached warts, variations in the amount of spores by the length of induction time for sporulation, and the effects of temperature and moisture on the sporulation were investigated. In addition to these experiment, the changes in the state of spores within the pycnidia contained in the warts accompanied by the induction of sporulation and dispersal of spores were also investigated. When detached warts were kept in moist conditions, the sporulation and discharge of spores were also investigated. When detached warts were kept in moist conditions, the sporulation and discharge of spores could be repeated several times, and the amount of spores were almost constant after each repeat of sporulation induction and dispersal of spores in a given period. The fact that the pycnidia filled with spores were observed at considerable rates within the warts which were subjected to the shaking in the water to release spores indicated that the spores might never be released until the pycnidia were fully matured. From the high rate of empty pycnidia even in the warts which were kept in moist conditions for induction of sporulation, the pycnidiospores might be produced through the development of new pycnidia. A considerable amount of pycnidiospores were produced at $5^{\circ}$, and the sporulation was accelerated with the rise of temperature until $35^{\circ}$. When the warts were supplied with sufficient moisture, sporulation was further accelerated. The results obtained in these experiment will be applied in developing the method for assessing the inhibitory efficacies of fungicides on the sporulation of this fungus, with which a new control measure would be developed.

  • A variety of safety issues were investigated for chemical reactors using a toluene solvent in case of a fire at small to middle scale chemical plants. The issues covered the operation of pressure-relieving valves and the subsequent discharges of the toluene to the atmosphere either directly or through an absorber, which represent the current practice at most small chemical plants. It was shown that the safety valve on the reactor may not operate within about twenty minutes after an external fire breaks out, but, once relieved, the toluene vapor released directly to the atmosphere may form a large explosion range on the ground. It was also shown that if the discharge is routed to an existing absorber used for the scrubbing of volatile organic compounds or dusts, the column may not operate normally due to excessive pressure drops or flooding, resulting in the hazardous release of toluene vapors. This study proposed two ways of alleviating these risks. The first is to ruduce the discharge itself from the safety valve by using adequate insulation and protection covers on the reactor and then introduce it into the circulation water at the bottom of the absorber through a dip linet pipe equipped with a ring-shaped sparger. This will enhance the condensation of toluene vapors with the reduced effluent vapors treated in the packing layers above. The second is to install a separate quench drum to condense the routed toluene vapors more effectively than the existing absorber.

  • A cylindrical secondary Li-ion cell is a device in which stored chemical energy is converted to electrical energy via an electrochemical reaction. These cells are widely used for applications that require high capacity and rate power, such as notebooks, power tools, and electric vehicles. The role of a center pin is to retain the channel for gas release, preventing blockage of the hollow of the jelly roll during a charge-discharge cycle, and to prevent an internal short circuit for tearing of separator under mechanical free fall. In this paper, two experiments are conducted with and without the center pin to experimentally verify the importance of the role of the center pin. The first experiment is a 50-cycle charge-discharge cycle test, and the second is a free fall test conducted according to the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards. Based on these experiments, we demonstrate that the center pin in a cylindrical cell is a very important component in terms of safety.
