Cooperative communications can significantly improve the wireless transmission performance with the help of relay nodes. In cooperative communication networks, relay selection and power allocation are two key issues. In this paper, we propose a relay selection and power allocation scheme RS-PA-PSACO (Relay Selection-Power Allocation-Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) based on PSACO (Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) algorithm. This scheme can effectively reduce the computational complexity and select the optimal relay nodes. As one of the swarm intelligence algorithms, PSACO which combined both PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) algorithms is effective to solve non-linear optimization problems through a fast global search at a low cost. The proposed RS-PA-PSACO algorithm can simultaneously obtain the optimal solutions of relay selection and power allocation to minimize the SER (Symbol Error Rate) with a fixed total power constraint both in AF (Amplify and Forward) and DF (Decode and Forward) modes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the system performance significantly both in reliability and power efficiency at a low complexity.
We propose a link adaptation and selection method for the links constituting an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless relay network. The proposed link adaptation and selection method selects the forwarding, modulation, and channel coding schemes providing the highest end-to-end throughput and decides whether to use the relay or not. The link adaptation and selection is done for each sub-channel based on instantaneous signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) conditions in the source-to-destination, source-to-relay and relay-to-destination links. The considered forwarding schemes are amplify and forward (AF) and simple adaptive decode and forward (DF). Efficient adaptive modulation and coding decision rules are provided for various relaying schemes. The proposed end-to-end link adaptation and selection method ensures that the end-to-end throughput is always larger than or equal to that of transmissions without relay and non-adaptive relayed transmissions. Our evaluations show that over the region where relaying improves the end-to-end throughput, the DF scheme provides significant throughput gain over the AF scheme provided that the error propagation is avoided via error detection techniques. We provide a frame structure to enable the proposed link adaptation and selection method for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-time division duplex relay networks based on the IEEE 802.16e standard.

In dual-hop relaying systems, the conventional partial relay selection is based on the channel information only for the first hop. On the other hand, the efficient partial relay selection is based on the channel information for the hop with the minimum of the average channel powers for the first and second hops at each end-to-end link since the correlation coefficient between the end-to-end link quality and the link quality of the hop with the minimum of the average channel powers for the first and second hops is larger than that between the end-to-end link quality and the link quality of the other hop. In this paper, the outage probability of the conventional partial relay selection and the efficient partial relay selection in dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying systems is analyzed for non-identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels. Through numerical investigation, the outage performance of the efficient partial relay selection is compared with the outage performances of the conventional partial relay selection and the best relay selection based on all the channel information for the first and second hops.

In this paper, considering the superposition transmission-based wireless cooperative multicast communication system (ST-CMS) with multiple relays and destinations, we propose a relay selection scheme to improve the data rate of multicast communication. In addition, we adopt the optimal power allocation coefficient for the superposition transmission to maximize the data rate of the proposed relay selection scheme. To propose the relay selection scheme, we derive an approximate expression for the data rate of the ST-CMS, and present the relay selection scheme using only partial channel state information based on the approximate expression. Moreover, we derive an approximate average data rate of the proposed relay selection scheme. Through numerical investigation, comparing the average data rates of the proposed relay selection scheme and the optimal relay selection scheme using full channel state information, we show that the proposed scheme provides extremely similar performance to the optimal scheme in the high signal-to-noise power ratio region.

This paper studies relay selection and power allocation for amplify-and-forward (AF) based two-way relay networks (TWRN) with asymmetric traffic requirements (ATR). A joint relay selection and power allocation algorithm is proposed to decrease the outage probability of TWRN with ATR. In this algorithm, two sources exchange information with the help of the relay during two time slots. We first calculate the optimal power allocation parameters based on instantaneous channel state information (CSI), and then derive a tight lower bound of outage probability. Furthermore, we propose a simplified relay selection criterion, which can be easily calculated as harmonic mean of instantaneous channel gains, according to the outage probability expressions. Simulation results verified the theoretical analyses we presented. It is shown that the outage probability of our algorithm improves 3-4dB comparing with that of other existing algorithms, and the lower bound is tight comparing with actual value for the entire signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region.

In this paper, we investigate traffic scheduling for a delay-sensitive multi-hop relay network, and aim to minimize the priority-based end-to-end delay of different data packet via joint relay selection, subcarrier assignment, and power allocation. We first derive the priority-based end-to-end delay based on queueing theory, and then propose a two-step method to decompose the original optimization problem into two sub-problems. For the joint subcarrier assignment and power control problem, we utilize an efficient particle swarm optimization method to solve it. For the relay selection problem, we prove its convexity and use the standard Lagrange method to deal with it. The joint relay selection, subcarriers assignment and transmission power allocation problem for each hop can also be solved by an exhaustive search over a finite set defined by the relay sensor set and available subcarrier set. Simulation results show that both the proposed routing scheme and the resource allocation scheme can reduce the average end-to-end delay.

In this paper, we propose a new relay selection scheme which can decrease the secrecy outage probability in a relay communication network with multiple relays and an eavesdropper. In the conventional relay selection scheme, a relay transmits jamming signal toward an eavesdropper to decrease the successful decoding probability of the eavesdropper. The coventional scheme has a critical problem that the successful decoding probability of a receiver also decreases. The new relay selection scheme proposed in this paper can significantly enhance the secrecy outage probability by selecting a pair of relays which can increase the successful decoding probability of the receiver while decreasing the successful decoding probability of the eavesdropper. We performed extensive computer simulation based on Monte-Carlo. The simulation results reveal that the proposed relay selection scheme can improve the secrecy outage probability by 10 to 50 times compared to the existing relay selection scheme.
We study relay selection in decode-and-forward (DF)-based relay networks consisting of a source, a destination, an eavesdropper, and multiple relays, where each terminal has a single antenna and operates in a half-duplex mode. In these networks, it is desirable to protect the confidential message from the source to the destination against the eavesdropper with the help of a single selected relay. Specifically, we begin by investigating DF-based networks for the scenario instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) related to the eavesdropper are available. For the scenario, we propose relay selection to maximize the secrecy rate of DF-based networks with and without direct-paths, and we derive the exact secrecy outage probabilities in closed-form.
In this paper, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes for physical layer security. Generally, high operational complexity is required for cooperative beamforming withmultiple relays because of the required information exchange and synchronization among the relays. On the other hand, while it is desirable to reduce the number of relays participating in cooperative beamforming because of the associated complexity problem, doing so may degrade the coding gain of cooperative beamforming. Hence, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes, where only two of the available relays are selected for beamforming and data transmission. The proposed schemes introduce a selection gain which partially compensates for the decrease in coding gain due to limiting the number of participating relays to two. Both the cases where full and only partial channel state information are available for relay selection and cooperative beamforming are considered. Analytical and simulation results for the proposed schemes show improved secrecy capacities compared to existing physical layer security schemes employing cooperative relays.

In this paper, for a cooperative communication system with multiple relays, we consider a relay selection method by exploiting the trust degree information of relay nodes. In the cooperative communication system, we interpret the trust degree of relays as the probability that relay helps the communication between the transmitter and receiver. We first provide an expected achievable rate at the receiver by taking into account the both cases that the relay helps the transmission of transmitter and the relay does not help the transmission of transmitter according to its trust degree. For given trust degree information, we propose an efficient relay selection method to maximize the expected achievable rate at the receiver. For the various configurations, the simulation results confirm that the proposed relay selection method outperforms the conventional relay selection method, which does not consider the trust degree of relay nodes.
