This study undertook research on the sections of 90 harbor structures which applied a pile-type soil improvement using the soil-cement pile and then, determined the minimum replacement rate for each section, showing sufficient stability in all relevant studies including numerical analysis. The reliability of the numerical analysis was verified by a centrifuge model test. As a result of the study, it was revealed that when the foundation soil is too soft ($s_u$ = under 15 kPa), it is unsuitable to apply a pile-type ground improvement to a soil improvement regardless of types of super structures. And a pile-type soil improvement was found to be suitable for a harbor structure with the relative stiffness ratio (n) of less than 50~75 at a maximum and the 2~3 MPa strength of the soil-cement pile. Furthermore the governing factor for the minimum replacement rate for the pile-type soil improvement was turned out to be the allowable horizontal displacement. Therefore, the primary review to see the applicability of the pile-type soil improvement requires the evaluation of horizontal displacements.

In the implementation of most civil structures, especially underground, deep excavations with a vertical slope are required. Using flexible retaining walls is applied as one of the ways to stabilize vertical holes. Therefore, it is necessary to know the parameters affecting the performance of such walls in reducing their horizontal movement. In this research, by building a suitable laboratory model, the parameters of the amount of flexibility, the embedment depth of the wall, the type and number of tieback in the wall were investigated for 42 static laboratory models. The purpose of this research is to study the flexible retaining wall with helical tieback compared to simple tieback at different heights, which shows the best performance in terms of reducing horizontal displacement in proportion to increasing or decreasing flexibility. On the other hand, one of the parameters affecting the flexibility of the wall, which is its bending stiffness, was extracted by numerical software outputs and studied on the results such as relative flexibility, stiffness, safety and numerical stability of the wall. The results of this study show that among the parameters, in the first place, the effect of the type of tieback is inhibited and in the second place, the ratio of thickness to wall height is known as the most important parameter. the best performance for walls with the helical tiebacks in reducing their horizontal displacement can be economically, flexibly and stability assigned to a wall that tiebacks is in the range of H2/t to H4/t and its flexibility ratio is 2/3.
The buckling behavior of the web of steel girders are largely dependent on the size and the location of stiffeners and the restraining effect of top and bottom flanges. Elastic and inelastic buckling analyses based or the Spline Finite Strip Method were executed to study the stiffening effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders and to find how the top and bottom flanges had effects on the web, where geometric boundary conditions were limited by both hinged, both fixed and the flange sections. The basic assumption for the longitudinal end boundary conditions was that the vertical stiffeners had the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the junction line between web and vertical stiffener was assumed to be hinged boundary conditions. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffener of the plate and box girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1995) and AASHTO Specifications(1994 LRFD) were compared with the results obtained numerically for the various longitudinal stiffener size of box girders. Simple equations and design curves for the longitudinal stiffener of the web were proposed for the practical use.
One of the prevailing structural systems in high-rise buildings is the core-wall system. On the other hand, the existence of one or more underground stories causes the perimeter below-grade walls with the diaphragm of grade level to constitute of a very stiff box. In this case or a similar situation, during the lateral response of a tall building, underground perimeter walls and diaphragms that provide an increased lateral resistance relative to the core wall may introduce a prying action in the core that is called backstay effect. In this case, a rather great force is generated at the diaphragm of the grade-level, acting in a reverse direction to the lateral force on the core-wall system, and thus typically causes a reverse internal shear. In this research, in addition to review of the results of the preceding studies, an improved relationship is proposed for prediction of backstay force. The new proposed relationship takes into account the effect of foundation flexibility and is presented in a non-dimensional form. Furthermore, a specific range of the backstay force to lateral load ratio has been determined. And finally, it is shown that although all suggested formulas are valid in the elastic domain, yet with some changes in the initial considerations, they can be applied to some certain non-linear problems as well.
High-rise structures prone to large vibrations under the action of strong winds, resulting in fatigue damage of the structural components and the foundation. A novel compound damping cable system (CDCS) is proposed to suppress the excessive vibrations. CDCS uses tailored double cable system with increased tensile stiffness as the connecting device, and makes use of the relative motion between the high-rise structure and the ground to drive the damper to move back-and-forth, dissipating the vibration mechanical energy of the high-rise structure so as to decaying the excessive vibration. Firstly, a third-order differential equation for the free vibration of high-rise structure with CDCS is established, and its closed form solution is obtained by the root formulas of cubic equation (Shengjin's formulas). Secondly, the analytical solution is validated by a laboratory model experiment. Thirdly, parametric analysis is conducted to investigate how the parameters affect the vibration control performance. Finally, the dynamic responses of the high-rise structure with CDCS under harmonic and stochastic excitations are calculated and its vibration mitigation performance is further evaluated. The results show that the CDCS can provide a large equivalent additional damping ratio for the vibrating structures, thus suppressing the excessive vibration effectively. It is anticipated that the CDCS can be used as a good alternative energy dissipation system for vibration control of high-rise structures.
In tall constructions, the outriggers are regarded as a structural part capable of effectively resisting lateral loads. This study analyses the efficacy of hybrid outrigger system in high rise RCC building for various structural parameters identified. For variations in α, which is defined as the ratio of the relative flexural stiffness of the core to the axial rigidity of the column, static and dynamic analyses of hybrid outrigger system having a virtual and a conventional outrigger at two distinct levels were conducted in the present study. An investigation on the optimal outrigger position was performed by taking the results from absolute maximum inter storey drift ratio (ISDmax), roof acceleration (accroof), roof displacement (disproof), and base bending moment under both wind and seismic loads on analytical models having 40, 60 and 80 storeys. An ideal performance index parameter was introduced and was utilized to obtain the optimal position of the hybrid outrigger system considering the combined response of ISDmax, accroof, disproof and, criteria required for the structure under wind and seismic loads. According to the behavioural study, increasing the column area and outrigger arm length will maximise the performance of the hybrid outrigger system. The analysis results are summarized in a flowchart which provides the optimal positions obtained for each dependent parameter and based on ideal performance index which can be used to make initial suggestions for installing a hybrid outrigger system.
A novel laminated-hybrid-composite-beam (LHCB) of glass-epoxy infused with flyash and graphene is constructed for this study. The conventional mixture-rule and constitutive-relationship are modified to incorporate filler and lamina orientation. Eringen's non-local-theory is used to include the filler effect. Hamilton's principle based on fifth-order-layer-wise-shear-deformation-theory is applied to formulate the equation of motion. The analogous shear-spring-models for LHCB with multiple-cracks are employed in finite-element-analysis (FEA). Modal-experimentations are conducted (B&K-analyser) and the findings are compared with theoretical and FEA results. In terms of dimensionless relative-natural-frequencies (RNF), the dynamic-response in cantilevered support is investigated for various relative-crack-severities (RCSs) and relative-crack-positions (RCPs). The increase of RCS increases local-flexibility in LHCB thus reductions in RNFs are observed. RCP is found to play an important role, cracks present near the end-support cause an abrupt drop in RNFs. Further, multiple cracks are observed to enhance the nonlinearity of LHCB strength. Introduction of the first to third crack in an intact LHCB results drop of RNFs by 8%, 10%, and 11.5% correspondingly. Also, it is demonstrated that the RNF varies because of the lamina-orientation, and filler addition. For 0° lamina-orientation the RNF is maximum. Similarly, it is studied that the addition of graphene reduces weight and increases the stiffness of LHCB in contrast to the addition of flyash. Additionally, the response of LHCB to moving mass is accessed by appropriately modifying the numerical programs, and it is noted that the successive introduction of the first to ninth crack results in an approximately 40% to 120% increase in the dynamic-amplitude-ratio.

The behavior of artificially cemented sands were investigated by undrained triaxial test of isotropically consolidated sample. The cementation were induced by gypsum that is generally used for the aitificial cementation of sands. The gypsum of 5~20%(sand weight) were included in the sand and cured in the mold under the overburden pressure 55kPa. The yielding strength and stiffness of cemented sand were increased as the degree of cementation. And the dilation of sand was restricted by the cementation bonds, but after breakage of the bonds, it was increased more abrupt than the uncemented sands. The effective stress path showed that the aspects of effective pore water pressure were changed as the degree of cementation and the relative density. The effective stress ratio of cemented sand in the phase transformation line and the failure line were changed by the cementation. Generally the behavior of cemented sand more influenced by the degree of cementation than the relative density.
Flexural strength of concrete ground slab reinforced with steel fiber is evaluated using the equivalent flexural strength ratio of steel fiber reinforced concrete based on the yield line theory. Recently, the European standard specifies that the tensile performance of the steel fiber reinforced concrete be evaluated directly from the residual flexural strength after the cracking of concrete. Thus, in the study, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the conventional equivalent flexural strength ratio and the residual flexural strength of the steel fiber reinforced concrete. Then the design flexural strength was investigated according to the location of a point load, based on the ratio of the radius of contact area of the load to the radius of relative stiffness. Design flexural capacity obtained from ACI 360R-10 was smaller than that from TR 34 (2003 & 2013). In addition, TR 34 (2013), which evaluates the design flexural capacity based on the residual flexural strength, showed slightly smaller value than TR 34 (2003).
Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are one of the most important and widely used lateral load-bearing systems. The reason for this is easier execution than reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls, faster construction time, and lower final weight of the structure. However, the main drawback of SPSWs is premature buckling in low drift ratios, which affects the energy absorption capacity and global performance of the system. To address this problem, two groups of SPSWs under cyclic loading were investigated using the finite element method (FEM). In the first group, several series of circular rings have been used and in the second group, a new type of SPSW with concentric circular rings (CCRs) has been introduced. Numerous parameters include in yield stress of steel plate wall materials, steel panel thickness, and ring width were considered in nonlinear static analysis. At first, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model was validated using three sets of laboratory SPSWs and the difference in results between numerical models and experimental specimens was less than 5% in all cases. The results of numerical models revealed that the full SPSW undergoes shear buckling at a drift ratio of 0.2% and its hysteresis behavior has a pinching in the middle part of load-drift ratio curve. Whereas, in the two categories of proposed SPSWs, the hysteresis behavior is complete and stable, and in most cases no capacity degradation of up to 6% drift ratio has been observed. Also, in most numerical models, the tangential stiffness remains almost constant in each cycle. Finally, for the innovative SPSW, a relationship was suggested to determine the shear capacity of the proposed steel wall relative to the wall slenderness coefficient.
