  • We report scanning force microscope (SFM) observations of enhanced calcite dissolution in aqueous solution due to mechanical stimulation induced by the SFM tip. Images and mechanical treatment were performed in saturated ($\geq$ 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) CaCO$_3$ solution adjusted to pH~9. Small area scans of monolayer steps significantly increased the step velocity in the scanned area (in the direction corresponding to dissolution) when the applied contact force is above about 160 nN fer the tips employed. The step velocity could be increased at least an order of magnitude by scanning at even higher contact forces (e.g.,270nN). This enhancement is a function of step orientation relative to the calcite lattice. Indentations near preexisting steps also locally enhance the step velocity. We present evidence that the higher dissolution rates are caused by stress-induced increases in the rate of double-kink nucleation.

  • In this paper, the problem of partial asymptotic stabilization of nonlinear control cascaded systems with integrators is considered. Unfortunately, many controllable control systems present an anomaly, which is the non complete stabilization via continuous pure-state feedback. This is due to Brockett necessary condition. In order to cope with this difficulty we propose in this work the partial asymptotic stabilization. For a given motion of a dynamical system, say x(t,$x_0,t_0$)=(y(t,$y_0,t_0$),z(t,$z_0,t_0$)), the partial stabilization is the qualitative behavior of the y-component of the motion(i.e., the asymptotic stabilization of the motion with respect to y) and the z-component converges, relative to the initial vector x($t_0$)=$x_0$=($y_0,z_0$). In this work we present new results for the adding integrators for partial asymptotic stabilization. Two applications are given to illustrate our theoretical result. The first problem treated is the partial attitude control of the rigid spacecraft with two controls. The second problem treated is the partial orientation of the underactuated ship.

  • In this paper, we propose a new shape from shading algorithm which reconstructs object shapes from a single image. In the proposed intative algorithm, given 3D surfaces are approximated by orthogonal polynomials and the relationships between the given surface and its derivatives are constructed ad matrix forms in terms of polynomial coefficients, Also the relative depth and its derivatives are obtained by updating them iteratively. Performance of the propose shape from shading algorithm is evaluated in terms of brightness error, orientation error, and height error, and the performance comparison of the proposed and conventional algorithms is shown.

  • This is the study on dry sliding wear behavior of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite at ambient temperature. The wear rates and friction coefficients against the stainless steel counterpart specularly processed were experimentally determined and the resulting wear mechanisms were microscopically observed. Three principal sliding directions relative to the dominant fiber orientation in the composite were selected. Wren sliding took place against smooth and hard counterpart, the highest wear resistance and the lowest friction coefficient were observed in the antiparallel direction. When the velocity between the composite and the counterpart went up, the wear rate increased. The fiber destruction and cracking caused fiber bending on the contact surface, which was discovered to be dominant wear mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study was to empirically verify influence of objective variables and subjective variables of time management strategy of unmarried men and women and provide a basis for the development of time management. The subject of this study were 370 unmarried men and women and interviewed with a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+ program for the frequency, mean, standard deviation, and regression analysis. The major results of this study were as follows: 1. The score of implementing time management strategy of unmarried men and women was the highest. The score of getting support time management strategy of unmarried men and women was the lowest. 2. Variables that affect overall time management strategy were age, academic career, sex, degree of information using fate control orientation and communication. 3. The relative contribution of subjective variables on time management strategy were higher than objective variables.

  • It is generally observed that steel fiber reinforced concrete with traditional straight steel fibers overcomes brittle nature of plain concrete by failure mechanisms by fiber pull-out rather than fiber rupture resulting from fiber yielding or concrete fracture at failured surface. Ring type steel fibers in concrete which is confined in concrete matrix and has better orientation, thus, lead to fiber yielding and concrete fracture as well as increase of flexural behavior of concrete more efficiently, Comparative experimental study is performed in order to measure the relative efficiencies of steel fiber reinforced concrete reinforced with two different fibers. It is found that better toughness is obtained from the ring type steel fiber reinforced concrete than from straight steel fiber reinforced concrete under flexural loading.

  • This paper presents the development of real-time estimation and control details for a computer vision-based robot control method. This is accomplished using a sequential estimation scheme that permits placement of these points in each of the two-dimensional image planes of monitoring cameras. Estimation model is developed based on a model that generalizes know 4-axis Scorbot manipulator kinematics to accommodate unknown relative camera position and orientation, etc. This model uses six uncertainty-of-view parameters estimated by the iteration method. The method is tested experimentally in two ways : First the validity of estimation model is tested by using the self-built test model. Second, the practicality of the presented control method is verified in performing 4-axis manipulator's assembly task. These results show that control scheme used is precise and robust. This feature can open the door to a range of application of multi-axis robot such as deburring and welding.

  • The central aspect of the research into virtual acoustic imaging for multiple listeners involves a detailed study of the relative orientation of both sources and listeners. It is vital in any multiple listener system to first establish the conditioning of the potential geometrical arrangements of transducers and listeners. In this paper, this made clear the important link between the conditioning of the electro-acoustic transfer function matrix between transducers and ears and the design of inverse filters for crosstalk cancellation. This work has been undertaken by using simple free field models of the electro-acoustic transfer functions. Therefore, optimal transducer arrangements have been identified and these have been proved by time domain solutions.

  • Stability of rock slope is greatly affected by the geometry and strength of discontinuities developed in the rock mass. In this study an analytical method which is capable of analyzing the effect of relative orientation between the discontinuities and the slope face on the safety of slope by assessing their vector components was used to evaluate the stability and the maximum cut-angle for the proposed slope design. The results of computerized vector analysis revealed that slope area under investigation might be divided into 3 sections of different face directions. The safety factors for benches in each 3 sections were calculated using the limit-equilibrium theory. Then, by utilizing the concept of probabilistic risk analysis, the susceptibility of entire slope failure was estimated. Based on the distribution of safety factor in each bench, the maximum cut angle of each section could be selected differently ot achieve the permanent stability of the entire slope.

  • A new bearing concept, the wave journal bearing, has been developed to improve the static and dynamic performance of a hydrodynamic journal bearing. This concept features a wave in bearing surface. Not only straight but also twisted wave journal bearings are investigated numerically. The performances of straight and twisted bearings are compared to a plain journal bearing over a wide range of eccentricity. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on the geometric parameters such as the number of waves, the amplitude and the starting point of the wave relative to the applied load direction. The bearing performance is analyzed for various configurations and for both cases of smooth and wave member notation. The wave journal bearing, especially for the twisted one, offers better stability than the plain journal bearing under all eccentricity ratios and load orientation.
