Reliability of the questionnaire was examined by Cronbach a. The data were analyzed with the SAS program including descriptive statistics, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results showed that (1) adolescents living with their parents adapted better to family life than those who lived separately. Those who shared problems with others adapted to school life better than those who didn't. (2) The ego-identity of boys was higher than girls on seven variables. (3) Ego-identity was higher among those who shared their problems. Those living with parents were higher on "general ego-identity," "worth," "social adaptability", and "self-acceptance." Adolescents with higher ego-identity adapted better to family and school life. (4) Father's career was related to "general ego-identity," "values," "social acceptance," and "peculiartity." • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe quality of life in school age children and the relationship between quality of life and parenting attitude as perceived by children and parent-child communication pattern. Methods: Data were collected between May 26 and June 3, 2009 using self-report questionnaires from 148 pairs of children and their parents. The children were enrolled in 4th to 6th grades. The questionnaires included the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Parent-Child Communication (PCC) Scale, and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). The data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 17.0 program. Results: The Quality of Life (QOL) score for the children was significantly higher among children reporting higher parental bonding attitude (mother r=.38, father r=.34) and parent-child communication (mother r=.43, father r=.36). Results of multiple regression showed that factors significantly associated with QOL were academic achievement, caregiver available after school, parent-child communication, school satisfaction, relationship with peers, and birth order among siblings. Conclusion: Positive relationships and good communication with parents and satisfaction with school life were important factors associated with quality of life in school age children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of ego-resilience, family strength, and school life satisfaction according to their family structure. 303 cases of them were selected from 912 elementary students' data in Busan and analyzed using the independent-samples t-test, Pearson's coefficient of correlation, and multiple regression. The results of the study were as follows: First, it was shown that children of parents family had positive perception on the ego-resilience, family strength, and satisfaction with school life than children of nontraditional family. Second, in children with parents family, family strength is a more powerful predictor of satisfaction with school life than ego-resilience. Finally, in children with nontraditional family, ego-resilience is a more powerful predictor of satisfaction with school life than family strength. The results implicated that ego-resilience and family strength of children influence on their school life satisfaction differently according to their family structure and therefore it needed for family structure-based mediation program to improve children' school life.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the relationship between stress perceived by middle school students and social support level and to investigate the factors affecting middle school students' smoking behavior. Method: The data was collected from four hundred and thirteen students of one boys' middle school and one girls' middle school. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 11.5 Win Program. Result: Smoking rate was higher in girls than boys. The factors affecting smoking behavior were drinking (OR=67.62, P<0.01), having one parent or no parents(OR=9.98, P<0.05), and higher material support(OR=4.67, P<0.05). Conclusion: This results showed that smoking prevention program is needed for girls' middle school students. To prevent smoking, teachers should help students to cope with stress from schools and their environments with careful guidance, and organized support for the student with one parent or no parents should also be established. Furthermore, guidance in student's relationships with peers is needed regarding appropriate allowance, drinking, or substance use.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data needed to understand school-age children's parent-child communication style, stress coping behaviors, and child behavior problems. The subject of this study were 362 primary school children (the fourth and the sixth graders) and their mothers in "D" Metropolitan City, Korea. The research tools included standardized parent-child communication style scale (Min,l991), stress coping behaviors scale (Min,1998), and child behavior problems scale (Hun,l996). The data were analyzed using statistical techniques such as Mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentile, t-test, F-test, pearson's correlational analysis, stepwise regression analysis. In the relationship between child perceived parent-child communication style and stress coping behaviors, the children who make open communication with their parents demonstrate high problem-solving, support-seeking coping behavior. The children with closed communication with their parents have high hope expectation, revenge coping behavior. In the relationship between child perceived parent-child communication style and child behavior problem, the children making more closed communication with their parents show more behavior problems. The children with more closed communication with their mothers have more hyperactive behaviors, aggressive behaviors, and immature behaviors, and the children who are making more closed communication retain more anxious behaviors and withdrawn behaviors. In the relationship between child stress coping behaviors and behavior problems, the more problem-solving and support-seeking coping behaviors the children possess, the less problem behaviors they demonstrate. The more hope expectation, revenge coping behavior the children possess, the more problem behaviors they show. With the results above, we can find out that parent-child communication style has an effect on stress coping behavior, and parent-child communication style and stress coping behavior have an influence on child behavior problem.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop programs that help students adjust to school and provide basic data for the students who have difficulty adjusting to school by analyzing the influence of elementary school students' stress and their relationship with parents on school adjustment. Methods: The study surveyed fourth graders in 3 elementary schools in G district. The researcher used convenience sampling to select the 3 elementary schools. The combined 158 students were selected for the analysis, and the survey was conducted for a month in September 2011. The stress monitoring tool used in the 5th year of Korean Youth Panel Survey was mobilized to measure levels of stress among the participants. To measure the parent-child relationship, the Korean Parent-Child Relationships Scale was used. For the measurement of school adjustment, a tool designed to identify the school adjustment of elementary school students was used. The SPSS 21 software and a two-sided test under the significance level of ${\alpha}=0.05$ were used to analyze data. The regression analysis was also used to identify the relative influence of the stress and parent-child relationship on children's adjustment to school. Results: The regression analysis has found the following: the higher peer stress (B=-0.175) and parental strictness (B=-0.159) grow, the lower the level of school adjustment gets; the higher the level of intimacy between parent and child gets, the higher the level of school adjustment grows; and intimacy between parent and child (${\beta}=0.400$) has the largest influence on the child's school adjustment. Conclusions: For elementary school students to be well adjusted to school, their stress and relationships with their parents should be managed. In particular, using the programs that can reduce stress from peers and increase parent-child intimacy will be effective in helping students adjust to school.
