  • Larix kaemferi is now a major economic kind of trees and is produced in large quantity every year. Thus, the study of Larix kaemferiis conducted to acquire the basic date of measures for the reasonable use, clarifying the relation with the compression strength parallel to grain according to anatomical properties by heartwood and sapwood, and earlywood and latewood. As the length of an earlywood tracheid and the radial wall thickness of earlywood and latewood tracheids increased, the compression strength rose, and as the height of uniseriate ray in cell number increased, the compression strength parallel to grain fell. The major anatomical factors effecting on the compression strength parallel to grain of heart wood were the radial wall thickness of a latewood tracheid and the length of a latewood tracheid, while in sapwood, the length of an earlywood tracheid and the radial wall thickness of earlywood and latewood tracheids were the major factor on it.

  • Recent earthquakes have shown that many of existing buildings in Iran sustain heavy damage due to defective seismic details. To assess vulnerability of one common type of buildings, which consists of low rise framed concrete structures, three defective and three standard columns have been tested under reversed cyclic load. The substandard specimens suffered in average 37% loss of strength and 45% loss of energy dissipation capacity relative to standard specimens, and this was mainly due to less lateral and longitudinal reinforcement and insufficient sectional dimensions. A relationship has been developed to introduce variation of plastic length under increasing displacement amplitude. At ultimate state, the length of plastic hinge is almost equal to full depth of section. Using calibrated hysteresis models, the response of different specimens under two earthquakes has been analyzed. The analysis indicated that the ratio between displacement demand and capacity of standard specimens is about unity and that of deficient ones is about 1.7.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effect of the length and volume fraction of smooth steel fiber on the electrical conductivity and shielding effectiveness of cementitious composites. As the length and volume fraction of the fiber increase, the movement of electrons becomes active and the formation of a conductive path becomes advantageous, thereby increasing electrical conductivity. Accordingly, the electrical conductivity and the shielding effectiveness showed a very close relationship. Thereafter, it is judged that research is needed to increase the shielding effect.

  • Objective: With the background of aging population in China and advances in clinical medicine, the amount of operations on old patients increases correspondingly, which imposes increasing challenges to critical care medicine and geriatrics. The study was designed to describe information on the length of ICU stay from a single institution experience of old critically ill gastric cancer patients after surgery and the framework of incorporating data-mining techniques into the prediction. Methods: A retrospective design was adopted to collect the consecutive data about patients aged 60 or over with a gastric cancer diagnosis after surgery in an adult intensive care unit in a medical university hospital in Shenyang, China, from January 2010 to March 2011. Characteristics of patients and the length their ICU stay were gathered for analysis by univariate and multivariate Cox regression to examine the relationship with potential candidate factors. A regression tree was constructed to predict the length of ICU stay and explore the important indicators. Results: Multivariate Cox analysis found that shock and nutrition support need were statistically significant risk factors for prolonged length of ICU stay. Altogether, eight variables entered the regression model, including age, APACHE II score, SOFA score, shock, respiratory system dysfunction, circulation system dysfunction, diabetes and nutrition support need. The regression tree indicated comorbidity of two or more kinds of shock as the most important factor for prolonged length of ICU stay in the studied sample. Conclusions: Comorbidity of two or more kinds of shock is the most important factor of length of ICU stay in the studied sample. Since there are differences of ICU patient characteristics between wards and hospitals, consideration of the data-mining technique should be given by the intensivists as a length of ICU stay prediction tool.

  • In this study, the telematics device was installed on the car (OBD-II) to collect the information on the operation conditions from each sample vehicle. Based on the information the domestic driving pattern was analysed and the ratio of cold start length was estimated. As a result of analysis for driving pattern, we found a difference in the frequency of driving on the hourly or seasonal basis. Then, the driving pattern of the rush hours, weekdays, and weekends could be derived. Also, from the study, an average of 2.22 times per day occurred in a single trip and average driving distance for the trip was 15.72 km. In addition, the proportion of cold start length was analyzed to be 16.11%. The seasonal cold start length has big difference from season to season (Winter 26.63%, Summer 8.22%, Intermediate 12.65%). There was an inverse relationship between the outside temperature and ratio of cold start length. In order to improve the accuracy of the cold emission estimation, it is necessary to apply domestic ratio of cold start length that driving pattern and temperature in Korea is reflected.

  • Tooth mobility is one of the most important clinical parameters in examination, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning procedure. In order to determine the differences of tooth mobility according to radiographical bone level, clinical root length, clinical crown/root ratio, and bleeding on probing, 90 male adults with periodontal disease and 10 male adults with periodontal health($25{\sim}45$ years old) were selected through clinical examinations including occlusal relationship, probing depth, attachment level, and bleeding on probing. On the mandibular anterior teeth, standard periapical radiographs were taken, and tooth mobility was measured by Periotest(Siemens Co., Germany). The radiographic bone level of individual tooth was evaluated as coronal 1/3, middle 1/3, and apical 1/3 to anatomical root length, and clinical crown length from incisal edge to bone level and clinical root length from bone level to root apex were measured with Boley gauge, and subsquently clinical crown/root ratio was calculated. The difference of tooth mobility(Periotest value) according to radiographical bone level, clinical root length, clinical crown/root ratio, and bleeding on probing was statistically analyzed by unpaired Student t-test. Tooth mobility was significantly higher in bleeding group than non-bleeding group on probing in the teeth radiographic bone level of middle 1/3, with clinical root length longer than 6mm, and with clinical crown/root ratio over 0.3(p<0.01). But there was no statistical difference in tooth mobility between bleeding group and non-bleeding group on probing in the teeth with radiographic bone level of apical 1/3, with short clinical root length less than 5mm, and with clinical crown/root ratio under 0.2(p>0.05). The results note that the tooth mobility depends on clinical root length, clinical crown/root ratio and gingival inflammation, and in the teeth with relatively good alveolar bone support gingival inflammation is one of the most important factors that affect tooth mobility.

  • Statement of problem. Conventional denture treatment for totally edentulous patients is associated with a variety of functional and psychosocial problems. The placement of implants in the anterior region of the maxilla and mandible and the fabrication of an implant-retained overdenture might solve these problems. Purpose. This study compared the marginal bone loss around the implant and evaluated the implant survival rate and complications in patients treated with overdentures retained by implants for 2 years. Material and methods. Patients who had received implant-retained overdentures using a Dolder bar at Samsung Medical Center from January 1999 to June 2005 and had participated in the annual recall programs for two years were selected for this study. A total of 18 patients and 56 $Br{\aa}ne-mark\;system^{(R)}$ implants were used, and their data were reviewed. Evaluations of the survival rate, bone quality, marginal bone loss, and complications were performed. The data on the Dolder bar length and clip length were measured. The change in marginal bone loss and the correlation between the marginal bone loss and bar length, clip length, or bone quality were investigated. Results. Implants placed in this study showed a 100% survival rate. The average annual bone loss was 1.12mm in the first year and 0.27mm in the second year in the maxilla, and 0.58mm in the first year and 0.22mm in the second year in the mandible. The marginal bone loss in the maxilla showed no significant association with those in the mandible. (P>.05). There was no significant difference in marginal bone loss around implants between the first and second year. (P>.05) There was no statistically significant relationship (P>.05) between the marginal bone loss and bone quality, clip length, or Dolder bar length. The Dolder bar length showed a high correlation with the clip length. (P<.05) Various complications were noted. Conclusion. These results confirmed the favorable outcome for patients treated with implant-retained overdentures.

  • This study aims to clarify the prosodic differences in speech types by examining the Korean read speech and spontaneous speech in the Korean part of the L2 Korean Speech Corpus (speech corpus for Korean as a foreign language). To this end, the articulation length, articulation speed, pause length and frequency, and the average fundamental frequency values of sentences were set as variables and analyzed via statistical methodologies (t-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis). The results found that read speech and spontaneous speech were structurally different in the form of prosodic phrases constituting each sentence and that the prosodic elements differentiating each speech type were articulation length, pause length, and pause frequency. The statistical results show that the correlation between articulation speed and articulation length was highest in read speech, explaining that the longer a given sentence is, the faster the speaker speaks. In spontaneous speech, however, the relationship between the articulation length and the pause frequency in a sentence was high. Overall, spontaneous speech produces more pauses because short intonation phrases are continuously built to make a sentence, and as a result, the sentence gets lengthened.
