  • Prior to the centrifugal model experiments of reinforced earth retaining walls, frictional tests were performed to investigate the frictional behavior between the sand and the reinforcements. Coefficient of friction between the soil and the reinforcements was evaluated using different reinforcements, their lengths and testing methods. Two different testing methods, the direct shear and the pull-out tests, were adopted and their testing results were compared to determine which. method better represented the actual behavior In the field.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking or debonding of the reinforcements cause a significant damage mode because the damaged reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. An incremental constitutive relation of discontinuously-reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of the composites is demonstrated.

  • It is reported that the amount of reinforcements for domestic PSC box girder bridges is used two times more that those for foreign PSC box girder bridges, which is considered to be irrational and uneconomical. Therefore, we have come to the conclusion through this study that the advanced design direction can reduce the amount of reinforcements under the condition that the static load test and the nonlinear analysis for the specimen of the PSC box girder bridge with reduced reinforcements which is designed by advanced design direction was carried out in order to verify the validity of the advanced design direction.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with an incremental damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. The composite undergoing damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. To describe the load carrying capacity of cracked reinforcement, the average stress of cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneity in an infinite body as proposed in the previous paper is introduced. An incremental constitutive relation on particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including progressive cracking of the reinforcements is developed based on Eshelby's (1957) equivalent inclusion method and Mori and Tanaka\`s (1973) mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of composites is demonstrated.

  • Green frame is combined by structural steel and reinforcements of Green column and beam and unified by cast-in-place concrete. However, when upper reinforcements penetrate structural steel hole, the execution is difficult due to interference of joint and a rib of deformed reinforcements. Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose the reinforcement tools to improve productivity of precast structure connection construction. The reinforcement tools proposed in this study can be helpful to improve constructability, safety, duration, and cost comparing with conventional reinforcement method since unskilled workers can deal with reinforcements easily.

  • The effects of volume fraction (15-30%) of SiC particulate reinforcements on the corrosion behavior of SiCp/7091 Al composites in the 3.5% NaCl solution were studied by electrochemical techniques and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the amount of SiC particulate reinforcements did not cause much difference in the corrosion behavior of SiCp/7091 Al composites but the corrosion rate was proportional to the amount of SiCp reinforcement. And numerous pits and severe dissolution of the matrix was observed probably due to the discontinuities and galvanic effects between Al matrix and SiC reinforcements.

  • Generally, a lot of reinforcements are used in nuclear power plant concrete structures in order to improve the structural safety, but it may cause several potential problems due to the overcrowded reinforcement, such as the degradation of concrete quality, the construction delay and the increase of construction cost. In order to resolve these problems, structural test researches and code change studies on using high-strength reinforcement (Gr.80) in unclear power plant structures are under way, and there is good progress in code change of ASM BPVC.III.2 and ACI 349. This purpose of this study is to review the code change status ASM BPVC.III.2, ACI 349 under way to use the high-strength reinforcement in nuclear power plant structures. Also I will introduce the design optimization of NPP structures with high-strength reinforcements in order to maximize the effect and minimize the problem when using the high-strength reinforcements in NPP structures.

  • Behavior of RC(Reinforced-concrete) beam-column connections has been subjected to the earthquake loading has been determined by shear and attachment mechanism. However, since the shear and attachment are very fragile for cycle loadings. Through occurring plastic hinges at the beam, the column and the connection should remain elastic condition and the beam should dissipate the energy from the earthquake. This study was investigate on the seismic performance of 6 RC beam - column connections built with the high strength reinforcements (700MPa) based on design and detailing requirements in the ACI 318-05 Provision and KCI-07 appendix II. This is aimed to evaluate the effect of the high-strength reinforcements as used the beam-column connection members. The main comparisons were the seismic performance of the connections affect the seismic performance in terms of strength, stiffness and ductility, joint shear stress-strain. A total of 6 beam-column specimens were built with a 1/2 scale and subjected to the cyclic loadings. Main design considerations were the area of the longitudinal reinforcements of the beam and details of the beam-column joint designed based on the seismic code. Cyclic test results are given and recommendations for the usage of high strength reinforcements for the seismic design is provided.

  • The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes some durability problems in reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. The epoxy coated reinforcements are one of the effective and reliable methods to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. However, it has been known that the epoxy coating reduces the bond capacity of reinforcement to concrete. This paper investigates the bond behaviors of epoxy coated reinforcements experimentally using direct pull-out test. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various reinforcement diameters of 10, 19 and 29mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 1, 2, 3, and $4.5c/d_b$ (ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. Total 66 specimens were manufactured and tested according to the RILEM standard method. As the diameters of the epoxy coated reinforcements increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated reinforcements and uncoated bars also increases. Epoxy coated bars showed more than 85% bond performance compared to those of uncoated bars. A new formular for estimating basic development length of epoxy coated reinforcement based on equilibrium equation is proposed using this experimental result.
