  • Fourier transform has been one of the most common tools to study the frequency characteristics of signals. With the Fourier transform alone, it is difficult to tell whether signal's frequency contents evolve in time or not. Except for a few special cases, the frequency contents of most signals encountered in the real world change with time. Time-frequency methods are developed recently to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier transform, which can represent the information of signals in time and frequency at the same time. In this study, heat damage process of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) under monotonic tensile loading was characterized by acoustic emission. Different kinds of specimens were used to determine the characteristics of Strength and AE signals. Time-frequency analysis methods were employed for the analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP such as matrix cracking, debonding and fiber fracture.

  • Flange and web local buckling in beam plastic hinge regions of steel moment frames can prevent beam-column connections from achieving adequate plastic rotations under earthquake-induced forces. This threat is especially valid for existing steel moment frame buildings with beams that lack adequate flange/web slenderness ratios. As the use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) have increased in strengthening and repair of steel members in recent years, using FRPs in stabilizing local instabilities have also attracted attention. Previous computational studies have shown that longitudinally oriented glass FRP (GFRP) strips may serve to moderately brace beam flanges against the occurrence of local buckling during plastic hinging. An experimental study was conducted at Izmir Institute of Technology investigating the effects of GFRP reinforcement on local buckling behavior of existing steel I-beams with flange slenderness ratios (FSR) exceeding the slenderness limits set forth in current seismic design specifications and modified by a bottom flange triangular welded haunch. Four European HE400AA steel beams with a depth/width ratio of 1.26 and FSR of 11.4 were cyclically loaded up to 4% rotation in a cantilever beam test set-up. Both bare beams and beams with GFRP sheets were tested in order to investigate the contribution of GFRP sheets in mitigating local flange buckling. Different configurations of GFRP sheets were considered. The tests have shown that GFRP reinforcement can moderately mitigate inelastic flange local buckling.

  • In this study, SiC powder was added to twill woven carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites to improve its mechanical properties. An acoustic emission (AE) frequency analysis method was suggested for the prediction of failure behaviors. Tensile tests were conducted and the fracture characteristics of each component of the SiC reinforced composite were evaluated using AE. The results showed that SiC powder improved the strength of twill woven CFRP composites and the fracture behavior of the SiC reinforced CFRP composite and its crack extension could be effectively evaluated on the basis of the specific AE frequency bands which are 100 to 228 kHz and 428 to 536 kHz upon the resin failure and 232 to 424 kHz due to addition of SiC powder and 576 to 864 kHz at the fiber breakage.

  • The finite element method(FEM) models were developed for the reinforced concrete flexural walls and analysed under constant axial and monotonic lateral load using ABAQUS. The major objective of the present study is to determine if the ABAQUS finite element program can be used to accurately model the post-cracked mode of failure in plastic regions of walls, and, if so, to develop practical failure criteria in the plastic range of the material response. The research comprises constitutive models to represent behavior of the materials that compose a wall on the basis of experimental data, development of techniques that are appropriate for analysis of reinforced concrete structures, verification, and calibration of the global model for reinforced concrete walls of increasing complexity. Results from the analyses of these FEM models offers significant insight into the flexural behavior of benchmark data.

  • High performance materials such as Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) are often used for retrofitting structures against blast loads due to its ductility and strength. The effectiveness of retrofit materials needs to be precisely evaluated for the retrofitting design based on the dynamic material responses under blast loads. In this study, the blast resistance of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Kevlar/Glass hybrid fabric (K/G) retrofitted reinforced concrete (RC) wall is analyzed by using the explicit analysis code LS-DYNA, which accommodates the high-strain rate dependent material models. Also, the retrofit effectiveness of FRP fabrics is evaluated by comparing the analysis results for non-retrofitted and retrofitted walls. The verification of the analysis is performed through comparisons with the previous experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by means of thin fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) laminas. This study focuses on modeling of structural of concrete bonded FRP laminate in flexural bending members. Used computational equation is derived by relation of stress and strain. The section analysis is based on experimental observations of a linear strain distribution in the cross section until failure, and a multi-linear moment-deflection curve that is divided into four regions, each terminated by a similarly numbered point. The load-deflection relationship in each region is assumed to be linear. The present model is validated to compare wit the experiment of 4-point bending tests of R/C rectangular beams strengthened with CFRP laminates, and has well predicted the moment-displacement relationships of members.

  • A new structural damage index for seismic fragility analysis of reinforced concrete columns is developed based on a local tensile damage variable of the Lee and Fenves plastic-damage model. The proposed damage index is formulated from the nonlinear regression of experimental column test data. In contrast to the response-based damage index, the proposed damage index is well-defined in the form of a single monotonically-increasing function of the volume weighted average of local damage distribution, and provides the necessary computability and objectivity. It is shown that the present damage index can be appropriately zoned to be used in seismic fragility analysis. An application example in the computational seismic fragility evaluation of reinforced concrete columns validates the effectiveness of the proposed damage index.

  • This paper investigates the soil effect on seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings by using the spread plastic hinge model which includes material and geometric nonlinearity of the structural members. Therefore, typical reinforced concrete frame buildings are selected and nonlinear dynamic time history analyses and pushover analyses are performed. Three earthquake acceleration records are selected for nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. These records are adjusted to be compatible with the design spectrum defined in Turkish Seismic Code. Interstory drifts and damages of selected buildings are compared according to local soil classes. Also, capacity curves of these buildings are compared with maximum responses obtained from nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. The results show that, soil class influences the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings, significantly.

  • In the past, the technology of strengthening structures using FRP composites was still in its infancy, with very few publications on the technology available. However, recently strengthening of Reinforced concrete (RC) and other structures using advanced fibre-reinforced polymer/plastic(FRP) composites has become very popular in the last few years. As the well-known advantages of FRP composites including both good corrosion resistence and ease for site handling due to their light weight, also its design methods have been ensured the safe and economic use of this new technology, FRPs have been used widely and demonstrated in the field of aero industries etc. The purpose of this paper is to report the examples of the many diverse applications of Fiber Reinforced Plastic in construction materials of structures.
