  • This paper describes the development and fabrication of a high temperature superconducting motor which consists of HTS rotor and air-core stator. The machine was designed for the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. The HTS field windings are composed of the double-pancake coils wound with AMSC's SUS-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor. These were assembled on the support structure and fixed by a bandage of glass-fiber composite. The cooling system is based on the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphon by using GM cryocooler as cooling source. The cold head is in contact with the condenser of a Ne-filled thermosyphon. The rotor assembly was tested independently at the stationary state and combined with stator. Characteristic parameters such as reactances, inductances, and time constants were determined to obtain a consistent overview of the machine operation properties. This motor has met all design parameters by demonstrating HTS field winding, cryogenic refrigeration systems and an air-core armature winding cooled with air. The HTS field winding could be cooled down below 30K. No-load test of open-circuit characteristics(OCC) and short-circuit characteristics(SCC) and load test with resistive load bank were conducted in generator mode. Maximum operating current of field winding at 30K was 120A. From OCC and SCC test results synchronous inductance and synchronous reactance were 2.4mH, 0.49pu, respectively. Efficiency of this HTS machine was 93.3% in full load(100hp) test. This paper will present design, construction, and basic experimental test results of the 100hp HTS machine.

  • UHPC has high performance, high strength and excellent mechanical properties. Moreover UHPC(Ultra High Performance Cementitious Composite) has advantage to reduce cross section under the same load compared with other kinds of concrete. But silica fume which is imported from foreign country has a abundant portion in UHPC mixture in comparison with normal concrete. This is one of the main reason to raise the construction cost. Superior mechanical properties of UHPC due to the optimum filling composition can be changed by replacing the very fine ingredient. The purpose of this research is to grasp the characteristic of UHPC which silica fume and silica flour is replaced with limestone powder. This experiment can be divided into three classes according to the kinds of replacement. The compressive strength and flow of all types were measured and microstructure and hydration phenomena for comparing RPC were analyzed by SEM, XRD, NMR method. As a result, the replacement can be considered to be effective by for the decrease of the UHPC structure construction cost and improvement of the fresh UHPC.

  • In this work, the electrical potential (EP) technique with an artificial neural networks (ANNs) for monitoring of nanostructures are used for the first time. This study employs an expert system to identify size and localize hidden nano-delamination (N.Del) inside layers of nano-pipe (N.P) manufactured from Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) laminate composite by using low-cost monitoring method of electrical potential (EP) technique with an artificial neural networks (ANNs), which are combined to decrease detection effort to discern N.Del location/size inside the N.P layers, with high accuracy, simple and low-cost. The dielectric properties of the N.P material are measured before and after N.Del introduced using arrays of electrical contacts and the variation in capacitance values, capacitance change and node potential distribution are analyzed. Using these changes in electrical potential due to N.Del, a finite element (FE) simulation model for N.Del location/size detection is generated by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic, therefore, FE analyses are employed to make sets of data for the learning of the ANNs. The method is applied for the N.Del monitoring, to minimize the number of FE analysis in order to keep the cost and save the time of the assessment to a minimum. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an ANN and the experimental results available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.

  • A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.

  • A novel silicon-containing arylacetylene resin (MSAR) modified by dipropargyl ether of bisphenol A (DPBPA) and dipropargyl ether of perfluorobisphenol A (DPPFBPA) was prepared separately. The curing behaviors of modified resins, DPBPA/MSAR and DPPFBPA/MSAR, were characterized with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The kinetic parameters of modified resins were obtained by the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed that the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the cured DPBPA/MSAR reached $486^{\circ}C$. According to the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the decomposition temperature ($T_{d5}$) of the cured resins and char yield ($Y_c$, $800^{\circ}C$) decreased as the dipropargyl ether loadings increased, especially in air. With the same weight loading, thermal stability of DPBPA/MSAR was better than that of DPPFBPA/MSAR. The carbon fiber (T300) reinforced composites exhibited excellent flexural properties at room temperature with a high property retention at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • The cure kinetics of carbon fiber-reinforced prepreg for Vacuum Bag Only(VBO) process was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The total heat of reaction (ΔHtotal = 537.1 J/g) was defined by the dynamic scanning test using prepregs and isothermal scanning tests were performed at 130℃~180℃. The test results of isothermal scanning were observed that the heat of reaction was increased as the temperature elevated. The Kratz model was applied to analyze the cure kinetics of resin based on the test results. To verify the simulation model, the degree of cure from panels using different cure cycles were compared with the measurement. The simulation model showed that the error against the experimental value was less than 3.4%.

  • In this study, an experiment which utilized glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) plank as the permanent formwork of cast-in-place high strength concrete structures was performed. The GFRP plank currently being produced has smooth surface so that it causes problems in behavior with concrete. Therefore, this research analyzed the flexure/shear failure behavior of composite beams, which used GFRP plank as its permanent formwork and has short shear span ratio, by setting the sand coated at GFRP bottom surface, the perforation and interval of the GFRP plank web, and the width of the top flange as the experimental variables. As a result of the experiments for effectiveness of sand attachment in case of not perforated web, approximately 47% higher ultimate load value was obtained when the sand was coated than not coated case and bending/shear failure mode was observed. For effectiveness of perforation and interval of gap, approximately 24% higher maximum load value was seen when interval of the perforation gap was short and the fine aggregate was not coated, and approximately 25% lower value was observed when the perforation gap was not dense on the coated specimen. For effectiveness of top flange breadth, the ultimate load value was approximately 17% higher in case of 40mm than 20mm width.

  • Condition and properties of composites with different chemical structure of epoxy matrix were observed after saline solution treatment. Epoxy was used as matrix and the flexibility was controlled by using 2 typed-epoxies and 3 types hardeners (amine, acid anhydride and amide). Saline water treatment was conducted with 6 wt% NaCl solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 0, 15, and 30 days. Cross section was observed and interfacial and mechanical and properties was evaluated. Amine type exhibited the highest crosslinking density and mechanical and interfacial properties whereas water absorbance was lowest. It is because that the water molecules can be hardly penetrate into the epoxy matrix or the interface between epoxy and glass fiber and it leads to saline water resistance of composites.

  • E-glass (electrical glass) fiber is the widely used as a reinforced composite material of PCBs (printed circuit boards). However, E-glass fiber is not stable because it has a dielectric constant of 6~7. On the other hand, D-glass (dielectric glass) fiber has a low dielectric constant of 3~4.5. Thus, it is adaptable for use as a reinforcing material of PCBs. In this study, we fabricated D-glass compositions with low dielectric constant, and measured the electrical and optical properties. In the glass composition, the boron content was changed from 9 to 31 wt%. To confirm the dependence of the dielectric constant on melting properties, D-glass with 22 wt% boron was melted at $1550^{\circ}C$ and $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. The glass melted at $1650^{\circ}C$ had a lower dielectric constant than the glass melted at $1550^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the D-glass with boron of 9~31 wt% was fabricated by melting at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs, and transparent clear glass was obtained. We identified the non-crystalline nature of the glass using an XRD (x-ray diffractometer) graph. The visible light transmittance values depending on the boron contents were measured and found to be 88.6 % ~ 82.5 %. Finally, the dielectric constant of the D-glass with 31 wt% boron was found to have decreased from 4.18 to 3.93.

  • In this study, the hydrophilic chemical grout using silanol (HCGS) was introduced to overcome the limitations of conventional epoxy resin which have been used for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Then, flexural tests on the RC slabs strengthened by FRP sheets were conducted. Three slab specimens were tested in this study; a control specimen with no strengthening, and two specimens strengthened by a typical epoxy resin or HCGS, respectively, as a binder between the slabs and the FRP sheets. In addition, an analytical model was developed to evaluate the flexural behavior of strengthened slab members, considering the horizontal shear force at the interface between concrete slabs and FRP sheets. The analysis results obtained from the proposed model indicated that the strengthened specimens showed fully composite behavior before their flexural failure. Especially, the specimen strengthened by HCGS, which can overcome the limitations of conventional epoxy resin, showed a similar flexural performance with that strengthened by a conventional epoxy resin.
