This study aims towards the improvement of a reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge in an effort to reduce the construction and maintenance costs, and achieve an improved seismic performance. Correspondingly, a new structural rigid connection is proposed for H-shaped steel girders and reinforcing bars at the corner of the rigid-frame structure. Both experiments and numerical analyses were performed. Prototype models were constructed and subjected to static loading tests to reveal their load-carrying capacity and failure mode. Numerical models were then developed using finite elements to evaluate the experimental results. Analyses elicited good agreement between simulation and experimental data and validated the numerical models. Moreover, the validity of the proposed rigid connection was confirmed, and the failure behavior was clarified. Finally, a full-size model of the reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge with H-shaped steel girders was constructed and subjected to destructive loading tests to evaluate structural integrity of the proposed rigid connection.

This paper is to investigate the retrofitting effect for a non-seismic reinforced concrete frame strengthened by perimeter steel moment frames with indirect integrity, which ameliorates the problems of the direct integrity method. To achieve this, first, full-scale tests were conducted to address the structural behavior of a two-story non-seismic reinforced concrete frame and a strengthened frame. The non-seismic frame showed a maximum strength of 185 kN because the flexural-shear failure at the bottom end of columns on the first floor was governed, and shear cracks were concentrated at the beam-column joints on the second floor. The strengthened frame possessed a maximum strength of 338 kN, which is more than 1.8 times that of the non-seismic specimen. A considerable decrease in the quantity of cracks for the strengthened frame was observed compared with the non-seismic frame, while there was the obvious appearance of the failure pattern due to the shear crack. The lateral-resisting capacity for the non-seismic bare frame and the strengthened frame may be determined per the specified shear strength of the reinforced columns in accordance with the distance to a critical section. The effective depth of the column may be referred to as the longitudinal length from the border between the column and the foundation. The lateral-resisting capacity for the non-seismic bare frame and the strengthened frame may be reasonably determined per the specified shear strength of the reinforced columns in accordance with the distance to a critical section. The effective depth of the column may be referred to as the longitudinal length from the border between the column and the foundation. The proposed method had an error of about 2.2% for the non-seismic details and about 4.4% for the strengthened frame based on the closed results versus the experimental results.
Reinforced concrete buildings with shearwalls are very efficient to resist earthquake disturbances. In general, reinforced concrete frames are governed by flexure and shearwalls are governed by shear. If a structure included both frames and shearwalls, it is generally governed by shearwalls. However, the ductility of ordinary reinforced concrete is very limited. To improve the ductility, a series of tests on framed shearwalls made of corrugated steel was performed previously and the experimental results were compared with ordinary reinforced concrete frames and shearwalls. It was found that ductility of framed shearwalls could be greatly improved if the thickness of the corrugated steel wall is appropriate to the surrounding reinforced concrete frame. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to predict the horizontal load-displacement relationship of hybrid reinforced concrete frame-steel wall systems according to the analogy of truss models. This analytical model is based on equilibrium and compatibility conditions as well as constitutive laws of corrugated steel. The analytical predictions are compared with the results of tests reported in the previous paper. It is found that proposed analytical model can predict the test results with acceptable accuracy.
The structural behavior of reinforced concrete frame infilled with a masonry wall is investigated by the method of discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA). An interface element is developed and it is incorporated into DDA to analyze the continuous and discontinuous behavior of the masonry structure. The numerical results are compared with previous research and possess satisfactory agreement. Then the structural behavior and stress distribution of a reinforced concrete frame infilled with a masonry wall subjected to a horizontal force are studied. In addition, the justification of equivalent strut is assessed by the distribution of principal stresses. The results show that the behavior of the masonry structure is highly influenced by the failure of mortar. On the basis of the distribution of principal stress of the masonry wall in the reinforced concrete frame, the equivalent strut can be approximately substituted for the masonry wall without separation and opening. However, the application of equivalent strut to the masonry wall with separation and opening needs further study.

The objective of this experiment is to observe the elastic and inelastic behaviors of high-rise reinforced concrete frame with infilled masonry. To do this a building frame designed according to Korean seismic code and detailed in the Korean conventional manner was selected. An 1:12 scale plane masonry-infilled frame model was manufactured according to similitude law. Push-over test were performed under the roof displacement control. To simulate the earthquake effect, the lateral force distribution was maintained to be an inversed triangular by using whiffle tree. From the tests, story displacements, lateral story forces, local plastic rotations and the relations between inter-story drift versus story shear are obtained. Based on the test results, conclusions on the characteristics of the elastic and inelastic behaviors of a high-rise reinforced concrete frame with infilled masonry are drawn.
This paper summarizes an experimental study on the seismic behavior of lower stories of a mid-rise reinforced concrete frame building. Two reinforced concrete frames with two stories and one span were tested and each frame represents lower two stories of an 11-story RC frame building. Both frames were designed in accordance with Japanese design guidelines and were identical except in the variation of axial force. The tests demonstrated that the overall load-displacement relations of the two frames were nearly the same and the first-story column shear was closely related to the column axial load. The columns and beams elongated during both of the tests, with the second-floor beam elongation exceeding 1.5% of the beam clear span length. The frame with higher axial loads developed more cracks that the frame under moderate axial load.

An optimization algorithm based on Genetic Algorithm(GA) is developed for discrete optimization of reinforced concrete plane frame by constructing databases. Under multiple loading conditions, discrete optimum sets of reinforcements for both negative and positive moments in beams, their dimensions, column reinforcement, and their column dimensions are found. Construction practice is also implemented by linking columns and beams by group ‘Connectivity’between columns located in the same column line is also considered. It is shown that the developed genetic algorithm was able to reach optimum design for reinforced concrete plane frame construction practice.
The objective of the present work is to evaluate the influence of two different methods of improving the ductility of Reinforced Concrete Frames and their influence on the full range behavior of the frames with M40 grade of concrete. For this purpose one fourth scale reinforced concrete square frames are experimentally tested subjected to static cyclic loading for three cases and monotonic loading for one case. The parameters are varied as method introducing ductility to the frame viz. (i) by using conventional concrete (ii) adding 1% of steel fibres by volume of concrete at hinging zones (iii) using self-compacting concrete with fibres at hinging zones. The energy absorption by ductile and non-ductile frames has been compared. The behavior of frames tested under cyclic loading have revealed that there is a positive trend in improvement of ductility of frames when fibrous concrete is used along with self-compacting concrete.
A supplementary reinforced concrete wall can be used to improve the seismic behavior of a buckling restrained braced frame as a mixed system. In such a novel system, the total lateral force is resisted by the combination of the RC wall system and the BRBF. There is not enough research on the response modification factor of such a mixed system. This paper investigates the response modification factor, and such relevant factors as ductility reduction factor and over strength factor for a system consisting of reinforced concrete wall and buckling restrained braced frame. To this purpose, nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis as well as static push over analysis are used for 6- to 14-story sample structures. The results show that for mixed considered systems, the mean value of response modification factor varies approximately from 7 to 9.
Response variability of reinforced concrete frame subjected to material property randomness has been evaluated with the aid of the finite element method. The spatial variation of Young's modulus is assumed to be a two-dimensional homogeneous stochastic process. Young's Modulus of concrete material has been investigated based on the uiaxial strength of concrete cylinder. Direct Monte Carlo simulation method is used to investigate the response of reinforced concrete frame due to the variation of Young's modulus with the Neumann expansion method and the pertubation method. The results by three analytic methods are compared with those by deterministic finite element analysis. These stochastic technique may be an efficient tool for evaluating the structural safety and reliability of reinforced concrete structures.
