The Effects of 24 weeks passive aquatic rehabilitation exercise on change muscular body type in Women with Osteoarthritis (24주간의 수동적 수중재활운동이 골관절염 여성의 근체형 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for effective osteoarthritis passive aquatic rehabilitation program and form of exercise prescription through passive aquatic rehabilitation exercise for 24 weeks for women with osteoarthritis. The subjects of this study were the passive aquatic rehabilitation group (CG, n = 10) and the control group (AREG, n = 10) among the subjects who had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis by the K orthopedic surgeon and visited the hospital more than 3 times were selected. The results of this study showed that the change of shoulder height in the group was significantly different in passive aquatic rehabilitation exercise group (p <.001). There were significant differences in passive aquatic rehabilitation exercise group (p <.001) between the groups with inhaled sacpula patterns. Changes in the pelvis patterns inferior pattern of the left and right pelvis patterns in the group were significantly different in passive aquatic rehabilitation exercise group (p <.001).

Effects of Home Exercise Program and Manual Therapy on Shoulder Function and Quality of Life in Patients with Adhesive Capsulitis

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of home exercise programs and manual therapy on shoulder function and quality of life in patients with adhesive capsulitis. Methods: A total of 31 patients were enrolled in the study. All subjects were randomly assigned to a home exercise group (n=15) or a manual therapy group (n=16). Both groups performed each intervention program three times a week for four weeks. After four weeks, both groups performed a home exercise program continuously until week 12. Shoulder function was evaluated using the Korean Shoulder Scoring (KSS) system, while quality of life was evaluated using the WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) before and 4, 8, and 12 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: There were significant differences in KSS before intervention and 4, 8, and 12 weeks after intervention for both the home exercise group and manual therapy group (p<0.001). There was also a significant difference in KSS at 4, 8, and 12 weeks when compared to the home exercise group and manual therapy group (p<0.001). Moreover, there was a significant difference in WHOQOL-BREF before and 4, 8, and 12 weeks after intervention in the home exercise group and manual therapy group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Home exercise and manual therapy improved shoulder function, but manual therapy led to a greater improvement in shoulder function better than home exercise. Home exercise and manual therapy improved quality of life, but there was no significant difference between groups.

The Effect of a 12-week Combined-Exercise Program on Physical Fitness and Fatigue for Cancer Survivors (12주간 복합운동프로그램이 암 생존자의 신체기능과 피로도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a combined exercise program on the level of physical fitness and fatigue for cancer survivors. Methods: The subjects were all of 61 persons consisted of prostate cancer(n=22), breast cancer (n=20), and stomach cancer(n=19) survivors. The exercise program was composed of a wall exercise, a chair exercise, a towel exercise and a bottle exercise which lasted 50-60 minutes each, two times a week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures were the fat mass, the muscle mass, the grip strength, the sit and reach, the 6 minutes walk, & fatigue. Results: At the completion of the 12-week combined exercise program, there were statistically significant differences in the grip strength, the sit & reach, the 6 minutes walk, & fatigue for the prostate, breast, and stomach cancer survivors. But no significant differences were found in the muscle mass between the pretest and posttest. Conclusion: As the 12-week combined exercise program was proved to be an effective intervention for improving muscle strength, flexibility, cardiopulmonary fitness & fatigue, it is thought that the program can be utilized as a rehabilitation program for cancer survivors.

The Effect of Smartphone Video Educational Program on Educational Satisfaction of Patients in Rehabilitation Units at a University Hospital (스마트폰 동영상 교육 프로그램이 일개 대학병원에서의 재활병동 입원환자 교육 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was to determine the effect of a smartphone video educational program on educational satisfaction of patients in rehabilitation units at a university hospital. Methods: The subjects of this study were 60 stroke patients recruited and divided into two groups; experimental group (n=30) and control group (n=30). Subjects in the experimental group and control group conducted conventional physical and occupational therapy. In addition, only the experimental group provided smartphone video information for a total of 15 sessions. The video consisted of five episodes (10 minutes each) viewed a total of 15 times (for each video three times). The outcome was assessed by educational satisfaction. Result: After inervention, both groups revealed significant increased awareness of prevention of infection educational satisfaction and prevention from falling educational satisfaction and exercise program educational satisfaction. However, the experimental group was more effective than the control group relative to heightened awareness of increasing prevention of infection prevention from falling and exercise program. Conclusion: We suggest that a smartphone video educational program may be effective in improving awareness of the prevention of infection, prevention from falling, and exercise program educational satisfaction. Therefore, video-based information is beneficial for such patients. Further studies are needed for better understanding of the effectiveness of a smartphone video educational program in rehabilitation units at a university hospital.

Development of an Ankle Rehabilitation Robot for Ankle-Bending Rehabilitation Exercise (발목굽힘 재활운동을 위한 발목재활로봇 개발)

  • This paper describes the design of an ankle rehabilitation robot for the force measurement of a severe stroke patient staying in a bed ward. The developed ankle rehabilitation robot was attached to a three-axis force/torque sensor that could detect force Fx, Fz, and torque Tz and measure the ankle rotation force (Fx) exerted on the ankle and the signal force Fz and torque Tz to be used as a safety device. The robot was designed and manufactured for bedridden stroke patients, and the robot program was manufactured to perform the flexibility rehabilitation exercise for ankle bending and to measure the ankle force to judge the degree of rehabilitation. According to the result of the characteristics test of the developed rehabilitation robot, it was safely operated while the ankle-bending flexibility rehabilitation exercise and the emergency situation were performed. Therefore, it is thought that the developed rehabilitation robot can be used for severe stroke patients.

  • Obesity increases the risk of knee and to a lesser extent hip OA, which combined affect a large percentage of middle-aged and elderly adults and which are major source of disability, and factor of drop a lowering in the physical exercise ability. Energy expenditure from physical activity accounts for up to 30% of total energy expenditure, it can have a significant impact on energy balance. We studied a exercise therapy that improved long-term weight management and produced additional benefits - loss of joint pain, improved joint mobility, and this exercise program will enhance the weight loss and health benefits from physical activity in the treatment of obese patients with osteoarthritis.

Effects of Musculoskeletal Disease Prevention and Treatment Customized Exercise Program according to Various Music Tempo on the Pain, Posture, and Function of Auto Parts Manufacturing Workers

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of exercise programs according to various music tempo on pain, posture, and function of automobile parts manufacturing workers. Design: Two-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: This study was an exercise program tailored to the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases were performed for a total of 4 weeks and 3 times a week for 60 minutes. The exercise program consisted of customized exercises according to the characteristics of the subject's musculoskeletal system. The subject provided music during the exercise program, and the group who applied the fast tempo music listened to the music of 120~140 bpm, and the group who applied the slow tempo music listened to the music of the low tempo of 60~80 bpm. Results: Significant differences were found in pain and physical function before and after the fast tempo music group and the slow tempo music group (p<0.01). However, there was a significant difference in posture characteristics only in the fast tempo music group (p<0.01). In terms of pain, physical function, and posture characteristics, the fast tempo music group showed significant improvement compared to the slow music tempo group (p<0.05). Conclusions: A customized exercise program using fast-tempo music and slow-tempo music to workers in the automobile parts manufacturing industry, significant differences in pain, physical function, and posture characteristics applied with fast-tempo music were found. In the future, applying an exercise program with a fast tempo is expected to help improve musculoskeletal disorders.

Morphological Changes in Quadriceps Muscles through 3-Week Combined Exercise using a Wearable Robot (EX1) in Young Adult

  • Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of regular exercise through the combined walking-oriented aerobic and resistance exercises using EX1 in young adults. Design: Experimental one group pre and post test Methods: Participants comprised17 healthy young adults. All subjects performed a combined exercise program for 10 times using EX1. We measured quadriceps muscle thickness using ultrasound. Additionally, the hand grip strength test, and sit and reach test were performed before and after the exercise. Through paired t-test, we investigated whether there was a statistically significant difference in the measurement results after exercise program. Results: The rectus femoris muscle contraction ratio showed significant difference after exercise(P< 0.01). In the sit and reach test, flexibility showed significant difference after exercise(P < 0.01). The hand grip strength test also showed significant difference after exercise(P < 0.05). Conclusions: Healthy young adults can effectively perform various exercises commonly performed in daily life using EX1.

Comparison between Isokinetic Peak Torque and Isotonic 1RM on the Knee Joint

  • Objective: Resistance exercise is a necessary element to improve quality of life, and measurement and evaluation of muscle strength provide important information for prescription and management of rehabilitation and exercise programs. This study analyzed the correlation between direct and indirect 1RM for isokinetic maximum torque of the knee joint in order to provide useful information in the field of exercise programs. In addition, the flexion-extension ratio and the difference in left-right deviation were verified. Design: A cross-sectional study Methods: The subjects of this study were 33 healthy adult men and women without medical problems who participated in the health exercise class program at S University in Seoul. The correlation between isokinetic maximum torque and direct and indirect 1RM was analyzed, and a dependent t-test was performed to analyze the flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Results: There was a high correlation between the isokinetic maximum torque and direct and indirect 1RM, and no statistically significant difference was shown between the test methods in the analysis of the flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Conclusions: Isokinetic muscle function measuring equipment is expensive, so it is difficult to use it in local exercise rehabilitation and training sites. Through this study, it was found that direct and indirect 1RM isokinetic maximum torque showed a high correlation, and there was no difference in evaluating muscle function such as flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Therefore, it is considered that the muscle function evaluation using 1RM in general field can be usefully utilized.

The Effect of Aqua-exercise Program on Back Pain, Flexibility, Time of Exercise and Self-efficacy in the Women with Chronic Back Pain (수중재활운동프로그램이 만성요통환자의 요통, 유연성, 근지구력 및 자기효능감, 운동지속시간에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was performed to explore the effects of aqua-exercise program on back pain, flexibility. time of exercise and self-efficacy in the women with chronic back pain. The design of this study was a equivalent pre-post test experiment. The subjects consisted of 31 women living in seoul. They underwent tests of back pain. flexibility. time of exercise and self-efficacy as baseline data before aqua-exercise program. The aquatic exercise was based on the Back hab and was consists of 60minutes session, 2 times a week for 5 weeks. Data were analyzed with percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and pearson correlation coefficient using SAS program. The results were as follows. 1. The back pain has significantly decreased after aqua-exercise program. 2. The dorsal flexibility has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. 3. The time of exercise has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. 3. The Self-efficacy has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. The findings showed the aqua-exercise program could be effective in decreasing the back pain and effective in increasing the flexibility, time of exercise and self-efficacy. It can be suggested the aqua-exercise is effective in the health promotion of the women with chronic back pain.
