  • The regional characteristics of crackdown on illegal fisheries in Korea Waters are investigated using data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, local cities and Provincial governments, and the Korea Coast Guard from 1996 to 2006, focusing on the relationship between the crackdown on illegal fisheries, catches within the affected regions, and characteristics of similar crackdown in Chinese fishing vessels. Illegal fisheries in the South Sea were all strongly affected within each region, and a relationship between the crackdown and subsequent catches showed a relatively good correlation in the South Sea. As a monthly variation, a strong correlation appeared during the autumn season, but this strong correlation was not evident during the spring. This paper suggests that a relationship exists between the crackdown on illegal fisheries and subsequent catch rates, suggesting that an intensification of these efforts in the South Sea and the Yellow Sea, and attendant increases in manpower and equipment would result in a significant decrease in illegal fishing by Chinese fishing vessels from year to year.

  • Sexual maturity and growth characteristics of Octopus minor were investigated in 796 individuals from mud flats in Goorori, Muan-Goon, Korea. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) peaked between June and July in females and between November and January in males. The discrepancy in the index peaks between females and males might result from the earlier sexual maturation of males. The sex ratio was biased toward females (68%) in April and toward males (78%) in September, although the differences were not significant (p>0.05). In females, about 50% of individuals with a mantle length of 70.6 mm were sexually mature versus 100% of individuals with mantle lengths over 80 mm. In females, fecundity was also related to size, ranging from 44 eggs in individuals with a mantle length of 54 mm to 179 eggs in the female with a mantle length of 100.5 mm. The relationship between mantle length (ML) an body weight (BW) was BW=0.008 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=389, r$^2$=0.83, p<0.01) in males and BW=0.029 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=407, r$^2$=0.74, p<0.01) in females. Analysis of co-variation showed that the difference in the slopes of the two regression lines was significant (p<0.01). Analysis of mantle length-frequency for each month revealed 1 to 3 normal distribution modes. The growth parameters obtained by fitting the modal progression to the seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) were ML$\infty$= 112.38 mm, K=1.9, C=0.90, and WP=0.1. The results indicate that the seasonal growth oscillation of the stock is very strong and winter is the season when growth is the slowest.

  • To obtain basic data, we investigated the effect of blade length on transplants, the transplanting method of Laminaria japonica for creating L. japonica resources and the number of transplanting plates with surviving L. japonica. The survival rate of L. japonica, blade length of transplants and drag force of transplanting plates were also researched. The number of transplanting plates with surviving L. japonica, the survival rate and blade length of 20 cm long-initial transplants were greater than those of 1.5, 5 and 10 cm long-initial transplants in an outdoor aquarium. At the depth of 4 m in the coastal waters, the number of transplanting plates with surviving transplants, the survival rate and the blade length of 30 cm long-initial transplants were higher than those of 10 and 20 cm longinitial transplants. The drag force is calculated by cording up sporophytes of L. japonica into the transplanting plates under water. The drag force in the case of a 2.18 kg-weight transplanting plate and in a current speed of 0.5 m${\cdot}s^{-1}$ for considering stability of the plate was 631.50 g to a concrete substratum on the seabed, 703.92 g to a shingle substratum, 788.00 g to a sand substratum, and 1018.30 g to a silt substratum. If we consider the stability and economic efficiency of the transplanting plate, the proper weight of the plate per one individual of 18.11 cm in blade width and 190.20 cm in total blade length is regarded as 508.2 g when it is calculated with the concrete substratum that shows the lowest drag force.

  • We investigated gonadal development and sex ratio of artificial seedlings of the oblong rockfish Sebastes oblongus, based on samplings for 370 days just after parturition. The primordial germ cells and genital ridge appeared separately under the mesentery in the yolk-sac stage larva (total length: 7.10-7.77 mm) just after parturition. The primordial germ cells and genital ridge integrated to form primordial gonad in 5-day-old larvae (7.12-9.68 mm), and then proliferation of somatic cell and germ cell occurred in the gonad, which was maintained undifferentiated until 45-days after parturition (18.6-20.4 mm). The ovarian differentiation began in the larva of 50-days old (dab) after parturition (dap) (20.0-24.5 mm). The somatic tissues elongated from the both opposite end-sites of undifferentiated gonad were consequently fused and formed a complete ovarian cavity at 60-days old dap (25.5-32.0 mm). In 80-days old dap (37.3-47.2 mm), meiosis of oogonia occurred to be chromatin nucleolus stage oocyte. The perinucleolus stage oocytes appeared at in 130-days old dap (68.0-86.0 mm), and previtellogenic stage oocytes appeared in 370-days old dap (101.0-116.0 mm). Only female was observed in the artificially produced oblong rockfish in the present study. This result revealed the effect of higher temperature on the sex determination of the oblong rockfish..

  • A single female specimen (73.6 mm SL) of ghost pipefish, Solenostomus cyanopterus Bleeker, belonging to the family Solenostomidae (new Korean name: Yu-ryeong-sil-go-gi-gwa), was observed and collected in the water off Yeongdeck, East Sea of Korea. Unlike to syngnathids, solenostomids are characterized by having the brood pouch formed by pelvic fins in female and dorsal fin spines present. This species is characterized by having the deep snout, and short, deep caudal peduncle, but no cirri and striped markings. In the water, the species swims slowly head downward in pairs and looks like a drifting pieces of algae or fallen leaf. We describe this species as new to Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "Yu-ryeong-sil-go-gi".

  • This research was carried out to know the trend in annual occurrence of bacterial disease. The diseased fish were collected from 147 flounder farms of Cheju Island from January, 1991 to December, 1997. Two types of diseases, that is "simple infection" and "mixed infection", were recognized. The simple infections were Vibriosis, Edwardsiellosis Streptococcal infection and Columnaris disease. The mixed infections were caused by a pair of pathogens mentioned above. During the whole period of this study, the highest number of annual occurrence of simple infection was 243 (26.8% of the total) in 1997 and the lowest one was 82 (9.1 %) in 1991. Monthly occurrence of simple infection was the highest number at 132 (14.6% of the total) in August and the lowest one was at 38 (4.2%) in January. Monthly occurrence of the mixed infected disease showed common pattern except November and December. The highest number of annual occurrence of the simple infected disease was 437 (48.2% of the total) in Vibriosis and the lowest one was 22 (2.4%) in Columnaris disease. The highest number of annual occurrence of the simple infected disease was 178 (53.1% of the total) in Vibriosis+Columnaris disease and the lowest one was 28 (8.4%) in Edwardsiellosis+Streptococcal infection.

  • The ichthyofauna of certain reservoirs in Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, were studied during the period from October 7-19, 2005. During the study period, 9,480 individuals (ind.) belonging to 22 species, 17 genera, 8 families and 4 orders were collected. Of these, 11 species were cyprinidae fishes, and the dominant species was Pseudorasbora parva (relative abundance 47.14%). There were six Korean endemic species (289 ind., relative abundance 3.04%), including Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Squalidus mulimaculatus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, Iksookimia yongdokensis and Coreoperca herzi, and the dominant Korean endemic species was Pseudobagrus brevicorpus (relative abundance 3.04%) collected in Hoehakji, Cheonggyeji, Ahnsimji and Mabukji. There were five introduced species. Three species, including Hemiculter eigenmanni, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco and Hypomesus nipponensis, were introduced from other native stream systems, and two species, including Carassius cuvieri and Lepomis macrochirus, originated in foreign countries. Of these, Lepomis macrochirus (l,521 ind., relative abundance 16.05%) was collected at the all reservoirs except at Gidongji. These results suggest that the exotic fishes in question have been widely dispersed within the reservoirs in Pohang-si.
