  • This paper describes an automatic visual inspection system for fabric defects based on pattern recognition techniques. The inspection for fabric defects can be separated into three sequences of operations which are the detection of fabric defects[1], the classification of figures of fabric defects, and the classification of fabric defects. Comparing projections of defect-detected images with the predefined complex, the classification accuracy of figures of fabric defects was found to be 95.3 percent. Employing the Bayes classifier using cluster shade in SGLDM and variance in decorrelation method as features, the classification accuracy of regional figure defects was found to be 82.4 percent. Finally, some experimental results for line and dispersed figures of fabric defects are included.

  • The author observed the effect of x-ray irradiation on the tooth germ development of the rat fetuses. The lower right abdomen of the pregnant rats were exposed to x-ray irradiation (400 rads) on 9½th day of qestation. At 18½th day of qestation, the fetuses were removed from their mothers and histological sections of molar region were prepared. The results were as folows: 1. In the experimental fetuses, no significant changes appeared in the histological aspects of the enamel pulp, except the poor development of the innerenamel epithelium in the cusp region. 2. Pulp cells of cusp region in the irradiated fetuses were not differentiated to odontoblasts, The arrangement and population of pulp cells showed marked regional differences in the dental papilla. 3. Developmental features of dental follicle of irradiated fetuses were similar with controls.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the church architecture by Alvar Aalto. General features of Aalto's architecture are the result of accommodating Modern architecture with regional qualities of Finland. The church would be the best example for understanding his architecture because he designed most of his churches in the prime of life. He established architectural types in his 30s through Viipuri public library and Saynatsalo town hall. He developed these types and applied them to his whole design. His type acts as a principle of configuration of his church architecture rather than a copy of form and shows the characteristics in the field of building layout, dynamic space and the effective use of light. Therefore, Aalto's church architecture can be recognized as the representative of Modern Finnish architecture in that they developed the meaning of their specific context including site, region and cultural tradition without losing the concept and technology of Modern architecture.

  • To understand the current seismic activity and regional tectonic status in and around Gyeongsang basin, Korea Institute of Geology, Mining, and Materials(KIGAM) has performed the earthquake monitoring around the Gyeongsang basin since early 1980's with portable analog seismic instruments for about two months every year. As a part of POSEIDON project, Korea-Japan joint observation around gyeongsang basin in 1991 and 1992, was performed using by temporary seismic station. KIGAM has been continuously operated nine short-period 3-components digital seismic stations since the end of 1994. During the observation period, 247 earthquakes were analyzed and their magnitude was less than 4.5. In general, we could not find any relationship between seismic activity and known surface geological features. But the epicenters were rather concentrated with NW-SE direction. The most active seismicity was found in Gyeongbuk Gyeongjugun Seokeupri and Hyodongri, and Yeongilgun Janggiri and Guryongpo in land, and in three region along the east coast which are 10km and 30km east off from Gampo and 30km east off from Jongja in offshore.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand and explain the traditional housing-culture in South East Asia, focused on the traditional Malay houses. The research objectives are : 1) to obtain informations related to the traditional Malay houses in West Malaysia. 2) to survey the traditional Malay houses in the selected area. 3) to understand their characteristics. It is expected that the traditional Malay houses were a major focal point of traditional Malay village society. The Malay houses provided the basic needs of shelter to the villagers. They were designed and built by villagers themselves, thus, manifestation of the creative and aesthetic skills of the community. Further, these houses reflect those factors including climate, geographical features, history of the region.

  • Suburban green space is an important component part of urban ecological system, the third largest space between urban center and peripheral countryside. Because of the specific regional location of the suburban green space, it differs from the green space in the center of the city in the respects of construction and planning. Anyhow, it has the features of less investment, quicker efficiency, free and easy management and good ecological effects. The writer of this paper holds that urban ecological construction should be planned rationally and laid out in an overall way under the prerequisite of making full use of and protecting local species so as to further extend the green ecological space at urban periphery, to create dense green surroundings, and to explore a way for ecological construction to develop in a scientific, effective and healthy way.

  • Tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is a polyphagous silk producing forest silkworm of commercial importance in India. Forest dependent people rear its larvae on different forestry host plants twice or thrice in a year for small household income. Larvae of A. mylitta feeds on many forest tree species, but always show a great degree of selectivity as a function of its behavioural responses to physical structure and chemical features of the host plants. Cocoon crop of A. mylitta is influenced by heterogeneity of tasar food plants and climatic conditions of the habitat. The role of host plants, temperature, humidity, rainfall, photoperiod and climatic variables on the growth and development of insects have clearly been demonstrated. This article entails an in-depth analysis on ecological and nutritional aspects of A. mylitta, which may provide selective information to researcher and forest managers, who are particularly associated with livelihood improvement of the poor people in forested area through location specific forest insect industry.

  • A 12-year-old dog was evaluated for depression and anorexia. The results of complete blood count and serum biochemistry were normal. Survey radiographs revealed markedly enlarged right kidney and abdominal ultrasound showed a renomegaly and hydronephrosis filled with mixed echogenic fluid. Primary renal tumor was suspected in this dog. Nephroureterectomy of the right kidney was performed, and no regional metastases have been identified. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) arising from renal pelvis accompanied hydronephrosis of the right kidney was diagnosed on histology. TCC usually affects trigone of the bladder, and renal origin of TCC is a very rare finding in dogs. This is the first case report to present the clinical features, diagnostic imaging findings and histopathological characteristics of a dog with TCC originating from the renal pelvis in Korea.

  • The recent interest in regions represents a rise of the new regionalism. Three competing theories provide the frameworks of explaining the ascendance of regions as the meaningful vessel of territorial economic and political processes. They are the orthodox new regionalism, the new politics of scale, and the relational topology of networked actors. Referring to these theories, this paper assesses the establishment of cross-provincial Area-wide Economic Regions (AERs) in Korea. The findings indicate that AERs represent a radical shift to a new regionalism. However, it is misconceived to see their ascendance as the orthodox new regionalism, as they marginally fit the hollowing-out of the state thesis. Nor they show distinct features to which the politically-inflicted regionalism is attributed. In consequence, AERs represent the emergence of a new regionalism that is consequent of the unique politico-economic context of Korea, say, a most centralized state-society combined with the neoliberalizing policy process emanating from the globalization pressures.
