  • Statistical trajectory analysis has been widely used to identify potential source regions for chemically and radiatively important chemical species in the atmosphere. The most widely used method is a statistical source-receptor model developed by Stohl (1996), of which the underlying principle is that elevated concentrations at an observation site are proportionally related to both the average concentrations on a specific grid cell where the observed air mass has been passing over and the residence time staying over that grid cell. Thus, the method can compute a residence-time-weighted mean concentration for each grid cell by superimposing the back trajectory domain on the grid matrix. The concentration on a grid cell could be used as a proxy for potential source strength of corresponding species. This technical note describes the statistical trajectory approach and introduces its application to estimate potential source regions of $CO_2$ enhancements observed at Korean Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory in Anmyeon-do. Back trajectories are calculated using HYSPLIT 4 model based on wind fields provided by NCEP GDAS. The identified $CO_2$ potential source regions responsible for the pollution events observed at Anmyeon-do in 2010 were mainly Beijing area and the Northern China where Haerbin, Shenyang and Changchun mega cities are located. This is consistent with bottom-up emission information. In spite of inherent uncertainties of this method in estimating sharp spatial gradients within the vicinity of the emission hot spots, this study suggests that the statistical trajectory analysis can be a useful tool for identifying anthropogenic potential source regions for major GHGs.

  • The examination of scientific analysis could give many information on the object of ancient glass. It would be allowed to understand the cultural situation and a course of inflow that the data of glass composition was classified by raw materials, technique of making, period and regional groups. Quantitative analysis conditions for SEM-EDS were set for glass and glaze on the pottery and 62 samples of glass beads excavated from Yangdong-ri remains at Kimhae were analyzed and classified. It was found that the glass beads were made of all alkali-glass. In addition, it was postulated that the potash glass was appeared from the 1st century A.D. and soda glass was appeared from the late second or early 3rd century A.D. in this region. The colors of glass were closely related to the concentration of metallic elements such as copper, iron and manganese. It was confirmed that the composition of glass beads could be classified and characterized by raw materials, color, period and regional groups.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a new energy minimization method for image completion with hierarchical approach. The goal of image completion is to fill in missing part in a possibly large region of an image so that a visually plausible outcome is obtained. An exemplar-based Markov Random Field Modeling(MRF) is proposed in this paper. This model can deal with following problems; detection of global features, flexibility on environmental changes, reduction of computational cost, and generic extension to other related domains such as image inpainting. We use the Priority Belief Propagation(Priority-BP) which is a kind of Belief propagation(BP) algorithms for the optimization of MRF. We propose the hierarchical Priority-BP that reduces the number of nodes in MRF and to apply hierarchical propagation of messages for image completion. We show that our approach which uses hierarchical Priority-BP algorithm in image completion works well on a number of examples.

  • An empirical formula for estimating duration magnitude(MD)is determined by analyzing 619 epicentral distance-duration data set, obtained from earthquakes of 1989-1998 recorded at the KMA network. Based on two assumptions: 1) observed signal duration decreases with increasing epicentral distance, and 2) seismographs of KMA are set at low-gain and therefore inclusion of sensitivity correction term in the equation is not necessary, scaling predicted duration at epicenter to Tsuboi's local magnitude yielded the duration magnitude equation: MD =2.0292$\times$log$\tau$+0.00123Δ-1.4017 for 1/0$\leq$ML$\leq$5.0, where $\tau$is total signal duration(sec)and Δis epicentral distance(km). Event by event comparison of ML values against MD estimates for t152 events shows that for events having a same ML the difference in MD estimates reaches as high as 1.1 magnitude units. So, to test the usefulness of the duration magnitude equation, we have calculated ML-MD relations by which duration magnitude estimates are converted to local magnitudes ("predicted" ML, say) which are then compared with the directly determined local magnitude values. Except for events with stations where duration is anomalously reestimates(predicted ML) which are in an agreement within a 0.2 magnitude units with the corresponding ML values. Although this study could gain some insights into magnitudes of the past events, we still need to re-examine all the observables in order to obtain more reliable and precise information about magnitude and hypocenter location. So we will pursue a new local-magnitude scaling, as well as refinement of the duration magnitude equation, starting soon with re-reading the amplitudes-arrival time records of (and hence relocating) 250+earthquakes of 1979-present recorded at the KMA network. Thus, with more reliable and precise earthquake parameters determined we would better understand the recent seismicity and related tectonic process within and adjacent region to the Korean peninsula.peninsula.

  • Recently, The wide range of the Internet applications and the related technology developments enabled the ease use of the digital multimedia contents (fixed images, movies, digital audios). However, due to the replay ability which the contents may be easily duplicated and not only the duplicates are capable of providing the same original quality. There are mainly the encipher techniques and the watermarking techniques which are studied and used as solutions for the above problem in order to protect the license holders' rights. To the protection of the IP(Intellectual Property) rights of the owner, digital watermarking is the technique that authenticates the legal copyrighter. This paper proposed the watermarking algorithms to watermark the 256 gray logo image and the color image by applying the wavelet transformation to the color stand-still images. The proposed algorithms conducted the watermark insertion at the LH frequency region among the wavelet transformation regions (LL, LH, HL, HH). The interleaving algorithms which applied in data communication was applied to the watermark. the amount of watermark increased which consequently caused the PSNR to decrease but this might provide the perseverance against the external attacks such as extraction, filtering, and crop.

  • Pinworm infection can occur through contact with contaminated surfaces followed by ingestion or even through inhalation of infective eggs. We have limited information regarding environmental contamination by eggs of Enterobius vermicularis. In order to determine environmental risk factors associated with the rate of E. vermicularis infection, we investigated possible environmental risk factors using a questionnaire from 46 kindergartens in 3 different cities of the southeast area of Korea. In total, using the cellotape anal swab technique, 3,422 children were examined for E. vermicularis infection. We evaluated E. vermicularis egg of books, educational materials, toys, room door handles, dusts of window edges, desks, chairs, tables, and dusts of classrooms. The overall egg-positive rate for E. vermicularis was 6.0%, and the prevalence of enterobiasis in each kindergarten ranged between 0% and 16.9%. We found that 78.9% of egg positive kindergartens were managed by private foundations, which was significantly higher, compared with kindergartens managed by public foundations or the nation. Compared with public or national kindergartens, most private kindergartens were located in residential areas and the number of children in these areas was significantly higher. In conclusion, numbers of children in kindergartens was found to be an environmental risk factor associated with transmission of enterobiasis in Korea.

  • Background: Coal mining is of significant economic importance to the Australian economy. Despite this fact, the related workforce is subjected to a number of psychosocial risks and musculoskeletal injury, and various psychological disorders are common among this population group. Because only limited research has been conducted in this population group, we sought to examine the relationship between physical (pain) and psychological (distress) factors, as well as the effects of various demographic, lifestyle, and fatigue indicators on this relationship. Methods: Coal miners (N = 231) participated in a survey of musculoskeletal pain and distress on-site during their work shifts. Participants also provided demographic information (job type, age, experience in the industry, and body mass index) and responded to questions about exercise and sleep quality (on-and off-shift) as well as physical and mental tiredness after work. Results: A total of 177 workers (80.5%) reported experiencing pain in at least one region of their body. The majority of the sample population (61.9%) was classified as having low-level distress, 28.4% had scores indicating mild to moderate distress, and 9.6% had scores indicating high levels of distress. Both number of pain regions and job type (being an operator) significantly predicted distress. Higher distress score was also associated with greater absenteeism in workers who reported lower back pain. In addition, perceived sleep quality during work periods partially mediated the relationship between pain and distress. Conclusion: The study findings support the existence of widespread musculoskeletal pain among the coal-mining workforce, and this pain is associated with increased psychological distress. Operators (truck drivers) and workers reporting poor sleep quality during work periods are most likely to report increased distress, which highlights the importance of supporting the mining workforce for sustained productivity.
