  • Aerosol hygroscopic properties were measured by a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA) system during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia campaign from 31 March to 1 May 2001. Two high flow differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) were used to maximize the count rate on board the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft (CIRPAS) Twin Otter aircraft. Hygroscopic growth factor distributions of particles having initial dry nanoparticle diameters of 0.040, 0.059, 0.086, 0.126, 0.186, 0.273, 0.400, and $0.586{\mu}m$ were measured during 19 research flights. Data collected during 12 of those flights were used to investigate aerosol mixing state and the influence of aerosol source region on size-resolved hygroscopicity. The uniformity in size-resolved hygroscopicity was quantified to facilitate comparison between measurements made in different air masses. Hygroscopic growth factors are strongly dependent on source region and sizes. Mean hygroscopic growth factors were observed to be greatest when the air mass origin was from the south. The mean growth factors for continental sources decreased with initial size from 1.47 to 1.27 for $0.040{\mu}m\;and\;0.586{\mu}m$, but increased with initial size from 1.44 to 1.8 for $0.040{\mu}m\;and\;0.400{\mu}m$ dry diameters for marine sources.

  • The Arabian Gulf region has one of the highest ocean temperatures, reaching above 35 degrees and ambient temperatures over 50 degrees in the summer. Two nuclear power plants (NPP) are being introduced in the region for the first time, one at Bushehr (1,000 MWe PWR plant from Russia), and a much larger one at Barakah (4X1,400 MWe PWR from Korea). Both plants take seawater from the Gulf for condenser cooling, having to modify the secondary/tertiary side cooling systems design by increasing the heat transfer surface area from the country of origin. This paper analyses the secondary side of a typical PWR plant operating under the Rankine cycle with a simplified thermal-hydraulic model. Parametric study of ocean cooling temperatures is conducted to estimate thermal efficiency variations and its associated design changes for the secondary side. Operational safety is reviewed to deliver rated power output with acceptable safety margins in line with technical specifications, mainly in the auxiliary systems together with the cooling water temperature. Impact on the Gulf seawater as the ultimate heat sink is considered negligible, affecting only the adjacent water near the NPP site, when compared to the solar radiation on the sea surface.

  • Vietnamese scholars contend that they have developed Southeast Asian studies viewing Southeast Asia as both a geographical entity with a long history and cultural tradition and a strategic region for modern development. This study has traced the construction of Southeast Asian studies as an academic discipline in Vietnam through the studies and arguments of Vietnamese scholars. It has put primary focus on the institutionalization of Southeast Asian studies, taking note of the assessment and perceptions of Vietnamese scholars. It also looked into the construction and limitations of Southeast Asian studies in Vietnam, which advocates Southeast Asian Studies as interdisciplinary area studies, with stressing of the origin of indigenous studies. The major contents of this study include: First, a historic overview of the institutionalization of Southeast Asian studies centering on research institutions of Southeast Asian studies in Vietnam, Second, the perceptions of Southeast Asian studies inside Vietnam and the inside evaluation of the effort to indigenize Southeast Asian studies. This study took note of Vietnamese scholars' perceptions and assessment of Southeast Asian studies performed by outsiders, primarily by Western scholars; the perceptions and evaluation of Southeast Asian studies conducted by Southeast Asian insiders; and the perceptions and evaluation of the origin of Southeast Asian studies indigenous to Vietnam. Last, it examined the construction and limitations of Southeast Asian studies in Vietnam, which advocates the studies as interdisciplinary regional studies.

  • Here, we studied the genetic diversity of native fowls in Laos by analyzing a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence polymorphism. A 546-bp fragment of the mtDNA D-loop region was sequenced in 129 chickens from the areas of Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse. In total, 29 haplotypes were identified and formed five clades. Haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the native fowls in Laos were $0.85536{\pm}0.0172$ and $0.010158{\pm}0.005555$, respectively. Although the Laotian native fowls were distributed across five clades, most of them were clustered in two main clades (A and B), which were originated in China. The other haplotypes were contained in clades D, F, and I, which originated from continental southeast Asia. These results suggest that multiple maternal lineages were involved in the origin of domestic chicken in Laos. Moreover, there appear to be at least two maternal lineages, one from China and the other from the southeast Asian continent.

  • The Oxford area is one of the major innovative regions of the world. The innovative characteristics of the area, however, have not been well exposed to the academic communities of the world and Korea. In fact, the area was a base of breading the Cambridge area and has also been playing important roles in creating the major British high-technology region, called "Golden Triangle," composed of Oxford, Cambridge and London. This paper investigates the process of growing innovativeness of the Oxford area and sheds more lights on the birth, growth and key actors of the area's Regional Innovation Systems(RISs). For this research, the author reviewed the literature related to the RISs, and gathered data based on the Internet, statistical data sources, interviews with local scholars and practitioners.

  • A new protein was cloned and identified as the sixth subunit of Choristoneura fumiferana origin recognition complex (CfORC6). The newly identified 43 kDa protein CfORC6 is much bigger than DmORC6 (25.7 kDa) and HsORC6 (28.1 kDa), though it's 23.85% identical to DmORC6 and 23.81% identical to HsORC6. Although the molecular weight of CfORC6 is close to ScORc6 (50 kDa), CfORC6 is only 14.03% identical to ScORC6. By alignment, it was found that the N-terminal of CfORC6 has about 30% identities with other ORC6s, but about 100aa of C-terminal of CfORC6 has no identity with other ORC6s. Like ScORC6, CfORC6 has many potential phosphorylation sites, (S/T)PXK. Like DmORC6, CfORC6 has leucine-rich region in the relevant site. Northern Blot showed that CfORC6 mRNA is about 2,000nt. Southern Blot confirmed that there is one copy of CfORC6 gene in spruce budworm genome. Western blot showed that infection of Cf124T cells with CfMNPV didn't affect the expression levels of CfORC6, at least up to 26 hr post infection.

  • Traditional Korean medicines may be managed more scientifically, through the development of logical criterion to verify their cultivation region. It contributes to advance the industry of traditional herbal medicines. Volatile compounds were obtained from 14 samples of domestic Taeksa and 30 samples of Chinese Taeksa by steam distillation. The metabolites were identified by NIST mass spectral library in the obtained gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) data of 35 training samples. The multivariate statistical analysis, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), and Orthogonal Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), were performed based on the qualitative and quantitative data. Finally trans-(2,3-diphenylcyclopropyl)methyl phenyl sulfoxide (47.265 min), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-phenyl-naphthalene (47.781 min), spiro[4-oxatricyclo[5.3.0.0.(2,6)]decan-3-one-5,2'-cyclohexane] (54.62 min), 6-[7-nitrobenzofurazan-4-yl]amino-morphinan-4,5-epoxy (54.86 min), p-hydroxynorephedrine (55.14 min) were determined as marker metabolites to verify candidates for the origin of Taeksa. The statistical model was well established to determine the origin of Taeksa. The cultivation areas of test samples, each 3 domestic and 6 Chinese Taeksa were predicted by the established OPLS-DA model and it was confirmed that all 9 samples were precisely classified.

  • An instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 24 elements associated with airborne particulates (PM10) that were collected in the most polluted urban region of Daejeon city, Korea from 2000 to 2002. Using the measurement data for various elements, both the extent of elemental pollution in the study area and the seasonality in their distribution characteristics were examined. Examinations of their distribution patterns indicated that most elements with crustal origin tend to exhibit seasonal peaks during spring, while most elements with anthropogenic origin tend to exhibit seasonal peaks during fall or winter. In order to explain the factors regulating their mobilization properties, the data were processed by a factor analysis. Results of the factor analysis suggested competing roles of both industrial and natural source processes, despite that the study site is located at a downwind position of the industrial complex. Based on the overall results of this study, it is concluded that the site may be strongly impacted by man-made sources but the general patterns of elemental distributions in the study area inspected over a seasonal scale are quite consistent with those typically observed from natural environment.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the variability in crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) content in cereal grains imported from different origins in Korea from 2006 to 2015. The values of CP and AA contents in corn, wheat, and barley were obtained from 430 and 325 samples from six countries, 83 and 56 samples from seven countries, and 60 and 58 samples from three countries, respectively. The CP concentrations in corn, wheat, and barley ranged from 7.12 (Brazil) to 7.68% (India), 10.55 (Ukraine) to 13.26% (Brazil), and 9.46 (India) to 10.49% (Ukraine), respectively. The Lys concentrations in the corn, wheat, and barley ranged from 0.18 (Argentina) to 0.24% (China), 0.26 (India) to 0.34% (China), and 0.23 (India) to 0.31% (Australia), respectively. The concentrations of CP and AA varied among different countries of origin (P<0.05), except for Met in wheat and CP in barley. The coefficients of variation for CP were 3.26, 9.06, and 5.36 from corn, wheat, and barley, respectively. The correlation coefficients (r) between CP and Lys concentrations in corn, wheat, and barley were positively correlated and were 0.322, 0.277, and 0.542, respectively. In conclusion, CP and AA concentrations varied not only from different countries of origins but also within the same country due to the geographic region in which they are produced.

  • Little is known about the origin and genetic diversity of swamp buffaloes in China. To obtain more knowledge on genetics of the water buffalo in China, the complete mitochondrial D-loop sequences of 30 samples from 6 native types were investigated. The results revealed 12 mitochondrial haplotypes with 50 polymorphic sites. Among these polymorphic sites, there were 49 transitions and 1 transversion. The average nucleotide diversity and haplotype diversity estimated from mtDNA D-loop region in 6 Chinese water buffalo types were 0.00684 and 0.798, respectively, showing rather abundant mitochondrial genetic diversity. The Neighbor-Joining (NJ) tree of mtDNA of Chinese water buffaloes was constructed according to the 12 haplotypes. The NJ tree indicated two lineages being designated lineage A and lineage B, in which lineage A was predominant, and lineage B was at low frequency. The new lineage B was first discovered and defined in 6 Chinese water buffalo types. These results showed that two different maternal lineages were involved in the origin of domestic swamp buffaloes in China and the lineage B was probably an introgression from Southeast Asian buffaloes.
