  • Unielement combustion tests were conducted using coaxial bi-swirl injectors. Major experimental parameters were a recess length and a fuel-side swirl chamber. Combustion efficiency mainly depends on a mixing mechanism for the present coaxial swirl injectors. Low-frequency pressure excitations around 200Hz were observed for all injectors. However, dynamic behaviors considerably differ for an external and an internal mixing case controlled by a recess length. The internal mixing induces mixture to be biased at a specific frequency in a mass flow rate, which results in a relatively high amplitude of pressure fluctuations but results for the external mixing case show that fuel and oxidizer mixture flow carries more complicated, multiple wave characteristics due to broad mixing region as well as disintegration and merging phenomena of propellant films.

  • Therapeutic injections into the craniofacial region can be a complex procedure because of the nature of its anatomical structure. This technical note demonstrates a process for creating an extra-oral template to inject therapeutic substances into the temporomandibular joint and the lateral pterygoid muscle. The described process involves merging cone-beam computed tomography data and extra-oral facial scans obtained using a mobile device to establish a correlated data set for virtual planning. Virtual injection points were simulated using existing dental implant planning software to assist clinicians in precisely targeting specific anatomical structures. A template was designed and then 3D printed. The printed template showed adequate surface fit. This innovative process demonstrates a potential new clinical technique. However, further validation and in vivo trials are necessary to assess its full potential.

  • In Japan and China, Podosphaera pseudofusca causes powdery mildew in Fatoua villosa. During a taxonomic revision of Korean powdery mildew fungi, isolates newly collected from F. villosa were studied. Through morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region and large subunit gene of rDNA, the powdery mildew fungus was identified as Podosphaera xanthii. In this study, we propose the merging of P. pseudofusca sensu Braun into the P. xanthii complex. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Podosphaera powdery mildew on F. villosa in Korea.

  • In order to detect the skin color area from input images, many prior researches have divided an image into the pixels having a skin color and the other pixels. In a still image or videos, it is very difficult to exactly extract the skin pixels because lighting condition and makeup generate a various variations of skin color. In this thesis, we propose a method that improves its performance using hierarchical merging of 3D skin color model and context informations for the images having various difficulties. We first make 3D color histogram distributions using skin color pixels from many YCbCr color images and then divide the color space into 3 layers including skin color region(Skin), non-skin color region(Non-skin), skin color candidate region (Skinness). When we segment the skin color region from an image, skin color pixel and non-skin color pixels are determined to skin region and non-skin region respectively. If a pixel is belong to Skinness color region, the pixels are divided into skin region or non-skin region according to the context information of its neighbors. Our proposed method can help to efficiently segment the skin color regions from images having many distorted skin colors and similar skin colors.

  • Extraction of region of interest for satellite image classification is one of the important techniques for efficient management of the national land space. However, recent studies on satellite image classification often depend on the information of the selected image in selecting the region of interest. This study propose an effective method of selecting the area of interest using the continuous digital topographic map constructed from high resolution images. The spatial information used in this research is based on the digital topographic map from 2013 to 2017 provided by the National Geographical Information Institute and the 2015 Sejong City land cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment. To verify the accuracy of the extracted area of interest, KOMPSAT-3A satellite images were used which taken on October 28, 2018 and July 7, 2018. The baseline samples for 2015 were extracted using the unchanged area of the continuous digital topographic map for 2013-2015 and the land cover map for 2015, and also extracted the baseline samples in 2018 using the unchanged area of the continuous digital topographic map for 2015-2017 and the land cover map for 2015. The redundant areas that occurred when merging continuous digital topographic maps and land cover maps were removed to prevent confusion of data. Finally, the checkpoints are generated within the region of interest, and the accuracy of the region of interest extracted from the K3A satellite images and the error matrix in 2015 and 2018 is shown, and the accuracy is approximately 93% and 72%, respectively. The accuracy of the region of interest can be used as a region of interest, and the misclassified region can be used as a reference for change detection.

  • In this paper, we propose an auto-detection algorithm of basal cell carcinoma(BCC) from the protophorphyrin IX(PpIX) fluorescence image induced by appling the methyl 5-aminolaevulinate(MAL) ointment-induced protophorphyrin IX(PpIX) to the skin tumour area and then shining the wood lamp on the area. The proposed algorithm first generates 3 mask areas-tumor area, suspected tumor area and tumor free area and then applies local watershed algorithm to the turner and the suspected tumor areas to make small watershed regions that include similar luminance value pixels. Next, small watershed regions are merged by hierarchical queue based fast region merging that uses the difference between the average luminance values of adjacent watershed regions as a region merging criterion and finally BCC regions are detected. 50 tissue samples are acquired from the tumour regions of 10 patients with BCC that are extracted by using the proposed algorithm and are performed pathological examination by expert dermatologist. Experiment result shows the rate of tumor detection from BCC lesion using presurgical in vivo of MAL-indeuced PpIX fluorescence has high sensitivity 94.1% and relatively high specificity 82.6%.

  • The performance of morphological image segmentation heavily depends on a proper selection of markers. In this paper, we propose a marker incubator where only a catchment basin that has grown sufficiently large through flooding simulation is registered as a marker. Marker incubator does following things at each flooding level; growing defined marker regions, finding new marker regions, and postponing irrelevant regions to be examined at the next level. The examination for a region to be a valid marker is performed by two size-oriented criterions that are derived from the structuring element size of a morphological filter. The simulation result shows that the image segmentation with the proposed marker incubator achieves the comparable image quality to Wang's method in a less number of markers even without region merging. Additionally, since the proposed method also performs better in terms of image quality and information for transmission, it is well suited for region-based image coding.

  • This paper describes the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on a NACA0012 airfoil using measured phase-averaged data. Especially, the phase-averaged wall shear stresses are reasonably evaluated using the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method. Due to the passing wake, the turbulent patch is generated in the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil and the boundary layer becomes temporarily transitional. The patches propagate downstream with less speed than free-stream velocity and merge with each other at further down stream station, and the boundary layer becomes more transitional. The generation of turbulent patch at the leading edge of the airfoil mainly depends on velocity defects and turbulent intensity profiles of passing wakes. However, the growth and merging of turbulent patches depend on local streamwise pressure gradients as well as characteristics of turbulent patches. In this transition process, the present experimental data show very similar features to the previous numerical and experimental studies. It is confirmed that the two phase-averaged mean velocity dips appear in the outer region of transitional boundary layer for each passing cycle. Relatively high values of the phase-averaged turbulent fluctuations in the outer region indicate the possibility that breakdown occurs in the outer layer not near the wall.

  • Region-based image retrieval techniques, which divide image into similar regions having similar characteristics and examine similarities among divided regions, were proposed to support an efficient low-dimensional color indexing scheme. However, color image segmentation techniques are required additionally. The problem of segmentation is difficult because of a large variety of color and texture. It is known to be difficult to identify image regions containing the same color-texture pattern in natural scenes. In this paper we propose an automatic color image segmentation algorithm. The colors in each image are first quantized to reduce the number of colors. The gray level of image representing the outline edge of image is constructed in terms of Fisher's multi-class linear discriminant on quantized images. The gray level of image is transformed into a binary edge image. The edge showing the outline of the binary edge image links to the nearest edge if disconnected. Finally, the final segmentation image is obtained by merging similar regions. In this paper we design and implement a region-based image retrieval system using the proposed segmentation. A variety of experiments show that the proposed segmentation scheme provides good segmentation results on a variety of images.

  • This paper presents an efficient region-based motion segmentation method for segmenting of moving objects in a traffic scene with a focus on a Video Monitoring System (VMS). The presented method consists of two phases: motion detection and motion segmentation. Using the adaptive thresholding technique, the differences between two consecutive frames are analyzed to detect the movements of objects in a scene. To segment the detected regions into meaningful objects which have the similar intensity and motion information, the regions are initially segmented using a k-means clustering algorithm and then, the neighboring regions with the similar motion information are merged. Since we deal with not the whole image, but the detected regions in the segmentation phase, the computational cost is reduced dramatically. Experimental results demonstrate robustness in the occlusions among multiple moving objects and the change in environmental conditions as well.
