  • Human endogenous retroviral long terminal repeats (LTRs) have been found to be coexpressed with sequences of genes located nearby. It has been suggested that the LTR elements have contributed to the structural change or genetic variation of human genome connected to various diseases. The HERV-W family has been identified in the cerebrospinal fluids and brains of individuals with schizophrenia. Using a cDNA library derived from a human brain, the HERV-W LTR elements were examined and five new LTR elements were identified. These elements were examined using a YAC clone panel from the Xq21.3 region linked to psychosis that was replicated on the Y chromosome after the separation of the chimpanzee and human lineages. Fourteen elements of the HERV-W LTR were identified in that region. Those LTR elements showed a high degree of sequence similarity ($91.8-99.5\%$) with previously reported HERV-W LTR. A phylogenetic tree obtained from the neighbor-joining method revealed that new HERV-W LTR elements were closely related to the AXt000960, AF072504, and AF072506 from the GenBank database. The data indicates that several copy numbers of the HERV-W LTR elements exist on the Xq21.3 region and are also expressed in the human brain. These LTR elements need to be further investigated as potential leads to neuropsychiatric diseases.

  • We investigate the degeneracy in the pattern of central microlensing perturbations of a pair of planetary systems where the planets are located from the primary with projected separations in units of the Einstein radius s and $s^{-1}$, respectively. From this, we confirm the fact that although alike, the patterns of central perturbations induced by a close (s < 1) planet and a wide (s > 1) planet are not identical and the degree of difference depends on the planet/primary mass ratio and the planet-primary separation. We find that the difference can be greater than 5% for planetary systems with lensing parameters located in the parameter space of (1/1.8 < |s| < 1.8, q > $5{\times}10^{-3}$), (1/1.3 < |s| < 1.3, q > $1{\times}10^{-3}$), and (1/1.2 < |s| < 1.2, q > $5{\times}10^{-4}$), where q represents the planet/primary mass ratio. Although this range occupies a small fraction of the entire parameter space of planetary systems, we predict that the chance of resolving the close/wide degeneracy would not be meager considering that the planet detection efficiency is higher for planets with resonant separations (s $\sim$ 1) and heavier masses. We also find that the differences between the perturbation patterns are basically caused by the effect of the planetary caustic. This explains the tendency of the perturbation difference where (1) the difference increases as the planet/primary mass ratio increases and the separation approaches the Einstein radius, (2) the region of major difference is confined within the region around the line connecting the central and the planetary caustics, and (3) a wide (close) planetary system has a more extended central perturbation region toward the (opposite) direction of the planet.

  • In this study, the effect of relative position of the blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade, and heat transfer of blade was examined for six positions within a pitch. Turbine test section has one stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is about $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. For the detailed mass transfer measurements on the blade surfaces, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. The inlet flow Reynolds number is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. Complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as separation bubble, relaminarization, transition to turbulence and leakage vortices. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity change significantly with the relative position due to the blockage effect of the blade. This causes the variation of heat transfer patterns on the blade surface. The results show that the flow near the leading edge get highly disturbed and deflected toward the either side of the blade when the blade leading edge is positioned close to the trailing edge of the vane. Therefore, separation bubble disappears on the pressure side and overall heat transfer on the relaminarization region is increased. But, due to reduced tip gap flow at the upstream region, the effect of leakage flow on the upstream region of the blade surface is weakened. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics significantly change with the blade positions.

  • In this paper, silk fibroin (SF)/polyurethane (PU) blend films were fabricated to develop a new biomaterial for biomedical applications. These blend films were prepared using formic acid as a cosolvent, and structural characteristics and properties of blend films were investigated. FTIR results suggested that there was no specific interaction between SF and PU, implying molecular immiscibility in SF/PU blend films. Furthermore, it was revealed by XRD method that the crystalline region of blend components was not perturbed by counterpart polymers. The degree of phase separation of SF/PU blend films was diminished by increasing PU content in blend. Especially, the blend with 70% content of PU showed no evidence of macro-phase separation in SEM observation. However, SF/PU blend (70/30) was revealed to be phase-separated in a lower dimension confirmed by DMTA measurement. TGA result showed that thermal decomposition temperature of blend film was slightly decreased compared to those of SF and PU polymer itself, Though mechanical properties of SF/PU blend films were not good enough due to the solvent, blood compatibility of PU can be enhanced markedly by mixing with SF for SF/PU blend film.

  • Total temperature distribution in high speed fee & wall jet regions was investigated using the total temperature probe. For the free jet, the distance of probe from the nozzle exit is changed in the range of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times o nozzle exit diameter. Energy separation phenomenon was observed on shear layer between jet and ambient. In wall jet region, impinging plate was fixed at Z/D=2 and total temperature distribution has been measured for various radial distance($R/D=1.25\sim2.0$). Energy separation phenomenon was found at wall jet boundary and near wall, and was compared with measured adiabatic wall temperature value.

  • A new improved inviscid separation model to calculate the mean flow past circular cylinders is proposed. The wake region is modeled by a pair of vortex sheets which emerge from the separation points and are allowed to move freely with the local stream. The vortex strength assumes a constant value for some initial distance which is related to the pressure drag and gradually decreases to zero as the sheet moves farther away from the body. This vorticity distribution automatically takes care of the length parameter which has been one of the deficiencies in the existing models. The procedure is tested against various experimental data and the agreement is quite good for both sub and super-critical regimes. The comparison with an existing model is also given.

  • The flowfields generated by gaseous slot injection into a supersonic flow at a Mach number of 3.75 and a Reynolds number of $2.07{\times}10^7$ are simulated numerically. Fine-scale turbulence effects are represented by a two-equation(k-w SST model) closure model which includes $y^+$ effects on the turbulence model. Grid convergence index(GCI) is also considered to provide a measure of uncertainty of the grid convergence. Comparison is made with experimental data and other turbulence model in term of surface static pressure distributions, the length of the upstream separation region, and the penetration height. Results indicate that the k-w SST model correctly predicts mean surface pressure distribution and upstream separation length. However, it is also observed that the numerical simulation over predicts the pressure spike and penetration height compared with experimental data. All these results are taken within $1\%$ error band of grid convergence.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the effect of the dihedral stator on the loss in a transonic axial compressor. Four stator geometries with different stacking line variables are tested in the flow simulations over the whole operating range. It is found that a large shroud loss at the rotor outlet and the subsequent shroud corner separation in the stator passage occur at low mass flow rate. The hub dihedral stator and bowed blade generate unexpected hub-corner-separation, thereby causing a large total pressure loss over the entire operating range. However, the corresponding blockage forces the high momentum flow near the hub to divert toward the upper part of the passage suppressing the negative axial velocity region. The dihedral stator increases deflection angle and secondary vorticity near the endwall where the dihedral is applied. As a result, the endwall loss which is related to the endwall relative velocity decreases.

  • The author has presented a new approach to design hydrofoil section shapes in consideration of viscous for marine propeller blades. In suction sides of propeller blades, the pressure distribution on hydrofoil sections in non-cavitating flow should be examined before the study of cavitation characteristics. Generally, the calculation results for hydrofoil conformal mapping method by which neglect viscous effects do not agree with experimental ones. Moreover, another papers reported that laminar separation bubble and transition played an important role on the cavitation inception. From these considerations, it is very important to study the viscous effects of the hydrofoil sections, especially the mechanism separation bubble and the apparent thickness of hydrofoil section. Therefore, the new design method of hydrofoil sections in consideration of viscous effects in comparison to the airfoil section should be studied. In designing the new hydrofoil section shapes, based on Eppler theory, the author tried to give the peak negative pressure in leading edge region for NACA airfoil in consideration of viscous effects without turbulent boundary layer separation as much as possible. The design method was verified from the fact that the boundary characteristics was improved and the lifts of new hydrofoils were slightly in creased in comparison to these of NACA 16-012 symmetrical, NACA 4412 non-symmetrical airfoils.

  • Numerical investigation was carried out on axisymmetric over-expanded rocket nozzle to predict flow fields of transitional shock separation patterns. The unsteady, compressible N-S equations with k-$\omega$ SST for turbulence model closure were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Computed results were in good agreement with previous experimental works. It was found that strong side-loads were generated during the transition of RSS to FSS due to the development of a vortex ring in the inviscid jet core region. Hysteresis phenomenon exhibited by the shock-separation patterns was also found during the start-up and shut-down processes.
