  • In this paper, a new disparity detection algorithm which is robust to noise is presented. It detects the disparity of an arbitrary pixel through the iterative competition with neighbor pixels in the range of disparity. A diffusion process to improve stereo matching confidence is used prior to detecting disparity of an arbitrary pixel. It is used for aggregating initial matching measure of the difference map. If the image region for matching is too small, a wrong match might be found due to noise. On the contrary, the region is too big, it results in blurring of object boundaries. Therefore, we decide the image region for matching by using the diffusion process for aggregating matching measure, then detect the true disparity with proposed competition method to the distribution of matching measure. Through the proposed method we get the result of improving matching rate of 6.96% with real stereo imge. From the simulation with the stereo imge, the proposed disparity detection method significantly outperforms the conventional method to matching rate.

  • Stereo vision is a fundamental method for measuring 3D structures by observing them from two cameras placed on different positions. In order to reconstruct 3D structures, it is necessary to create a disparity map from a pair of stereo images. To create a disparity map we compute the matching cost for each point correspondence and compute the disparity that minimizes the sum of the whole matching costs. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate a dense disparity map using region segmentation. We segment each scanline using region homogeneity properties. Using the segmented regions, we prohibit false matches in the stereo matching process. Disparities for pixels that failed in matching are filled by interpolating neighborhood disparities. We applied the proposed method to various stereo images of real environments. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is stable and potentially viable in practical applications.

  • Vegetational data obtained from 24 quadrats of Mt. Paekdu area were analysed by applying two multivariate methods : two-way indicator species analysis(TWIMSPAN) for classification and detrended canonical correspondence analysis(DCCA) for ordination. DCCA technique allowed to extract the ordination axes that could be related to 9 environmental factors. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1,700-1,950m from sea level were Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1.300-1.500m were Abies nephrolepis, Pinus koraiensis, Larix olgensis, Betula mandshurica, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The available phosphorus content in forest soil ranged from 7 to 1.153ppm. The distribution of the major communities showed a close relationship with elevation gradient. From high to low elevation, the communities of Alnus fruticosa var. mandshurica, Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis, and Quercus mongolica were found in descending order. At the communities where Betula ermanii was dominant, Betula ermanii forest was distributed in the high elevation area, Betula ermanii-Larix olgensis forest in the good nutrition of organic matter and $K^+$, and Abies nephrolepis forest in the good nutrition of $Mg^{{+}{+}}$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$. The most dominant factor influencing community distribution was elevation.

  • The capitalist economic process of glocalization and development of transportation and communication technology have led us to the significance of network city as well as concepts of global city, megacity region, etc. Network city theory pursues development of both individual cities and of the region of those cities through strengthening of mutual connectivity among them with specialized industries. On the basis of network city theory, this paper is to analyze specialized industries of cities and connectivity among them in the Youngnam region in S. Korea. It uses the methods of locational quotient, locational Gini coefficient, and shift-share method to analyze specialized industries of cities, and correspondence analysis, global and local Moran's I to examine connectivity among cities. As results, it can be identified that each city in the Youngnam region has its own specialized industries different from each others, but it seems not easy to grasp the overall extent of connectivity among them, partly because of the limitations of applied analysis methods and partly because of a lack of connectivity among cities themselves.

  • The status and the property of a tongue are the important indicators to diagnose one's health like physiological and clinicopathological changes of inner organs. However, the tongue diagnosis is affected by examination circumstances like a light source, patient's posture, and doctor's condition. To develop an automatic tongue diagnosis system for an objective and standardized diagnosis, classifying tongue coating is inevitable but difficult since the features like color and texture of the tongue coatings and substance have little difference, especially in the neighborhood on the tongue surface. The proposed method has two procedures; the first is to acquire the color table to classify tongue coatings and substance by automatically separating coating regions marked by oriental medical doctors, decomposing the color components of the region into hue, saturation and brightness and obtaining the 2nd order discriminant with statistical data of hue and saturation corresponding to each kind of tongue coatings, and the other is to apply the tongue region in an input image to the color table, resulting in separating the regions of tongue coatings and classifying them automatically. As a result, kinds of tongue coatings and substance were segmented from a face image corresponding to regions marked by oriental medical doctors and the color table for classification took hue and saturation values as inputs and produced the classification of the values into white coating, yellow coating and substance in a digital tongue diagnosis system. The coating regions classified by the proposed method were almost the same to the marked regions. The exactness of classification was 83%, which is the degree of correspondence between what Oriental medical doctors diagnosed and what the proposed method classified. Since the classified regions provide effective information, the proposed method can be used to make an objective and standardized diagnosis and applied to an ubiquitous healthcare system. Therefore, the method will be able to be widely used in Oriental medicine.

  • To assess short-term variation of summer phytoplankton community structure in different water masses, phytoplankton and environmental factors were monitored from 31 stations on and off the southern coasts of Korea, from June 18 to June 20 2009. According to multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the southern sea was divided into two groups. The first group included stations in the south-eastern region of Jeju Island, which is strongly influenced by the Kuroshio warm current. The second group located along the coastal region of the southern sea, which was mainly comprised of Bacillariophyceae and Crytophyceae. Of these stations, St. 13 and 28 formed a temperature front caused by different hydrological conditions. In particular, nutrients and Chl.a concentrations in these two stations were significantly higher compared to those in the other stations. This indicates that phytoplankton population and subsequent microalgal growth under high nutrient concentrations vary in different water masses. Our results support the theory that phytoplankton community structure in the southern sea of Korea can be influenced on a short-term scale by different water masses and currents.

  • The determination of the conformal maps from the unit disk onto a Jordan region has been completed by solving the Theodorsen equation which is an nonlinear equation for the boundary correspondence function. Wegmann's method has been well known for the efficient mothed among the many suggestions for the Theodorsen equation. We proposed an improved method for convergence by applying a low-frequency pass filter to the Wegmann's method and theoretically proved convergence of improved iteration[1, 2]. And we proposed an effective method which makes it possible to estimate an error even if the real value is nut acquired[3]. In this paper, we propose an automatic algorithm for numerical conformal mapping bared on this error analysis in our early study. By this algorithm numerical conformal mapping is determined automatically according to the given domain of problem and the required accuracy. The discrete numbers and parameters of the low-frequency filter were acquired only by experience. This algorithm, however, is able to determine the discrete numbers and parameters of the low-frequency filter automatically in accordance with the given region This results from analyzing the function, which may decide the shape of the given domain under the assumption that the degree of the problem depends of the transformation of a given domain, as seen in the Fourier Transform. This proposed algorithm is also ploved by numerical experience.

  • As multiview video applications become more popular, correspondence problem for stereo image matching plays an important role in expanding view points. Thus, we propose an efficient dense disparity estimation algorithm considering features of each image pair of multiview image sets. Main concepts of the proposed algorithm are based on the region-dividing-bidirectional-pixel-matching method. This algorithm makes matching process efficient and keeps the reliability of the estimated disparities. Other improvement have obtained by proposed cost function, matching window expanding technique, disparity regularization, and disparity assignment in ambiguous region. These techniques make disparities more stable by removing false disparities and ambiguous regions. The estimated disparities are used to synthesize intermediate views of multiview images. Computer simulation demonstrates the excellence of the proposed algorithm in both subjective and objective evaluations. In addition, processing time is reduced as well.

  • Pc1 pulsations are important to consider for the interpretation of wave-particle interactions in the Earth's magnetosphere. In fact, the wave properties of these pulsations change dynamically when they propagate from the source region in the space to the ground. A detailed study of the wave features can help understanding their time evolution mechanisms. In this study, we statistically analyzed Pc1 pulsations observed by a Bohyunsan (BOH) magneto-impedance (MI) sensor located in Korea (L = 1.3) for ~one solar cycle (November 2009-August 2018). In particular, we investigated the temporal occurrence ratio of Pc1 pulsations (considering seasonal, diurnal, and annual variations in the solar cycle), their wave properties (e.g., duration, peak frequency, and bandwidth), and their relationship with geomagnetic activities by considering the Kp and Dst indices in correspondence of the Pc1 pulsation events. We found that the Pc1 waves frequently occurred in March in the dawn (1-3 magnetic local time (MLT)) sector, during the declining phase of the solar cycle. They generally continued for 2-5 minutes, reaching a peak frequency of ~0.9 Hz. Finally, most of the pulsations have strong dependence on the geomagnetic storm and observed during the early recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm.
