  • In the DC electric railway system, the effective use of regenerative break energy is an important issue. Since regenerative break energy causes voltage rise or drop in the system, it should be also solved effectively. To solve the problems, applying electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) or voltage source converter (VSC) to the DC electric railway system has been studying. In this paper, the coordination of EDLC and VSC is proposed to solve the problem effectively with its coordinated control algorithm. The proposed method is tested to show its feasibility using Matlab/Simulink.

  • Vehicles usually have 3 types of speed pattern like acceleration, travel, and deceleration. It requires much driving energy from engine while accelerating, preserves much kinetic energy by inertia moment at travel speed, and releases the kinetic energy to the air while decelerating by the break system. If we accumulate the kinetic energy while decelerating and reuse the energy at the accelerating stage, then it can elevate the fuel efficiency, reduce the emission and improve the motive power. This paper proposes a hydraulic type energy regenerative system which converts the kinetic energy into hydraulic energy at the stage of deceleration and reuses it at the starting and accelerating stage of vehicles. The test equipment which has the field condition of city bus was prepared to evaluate the performance for energy regeneration. The test results show that both energy regeneration efficiency and fuel efficiency are improved significantly and the emission is reduced notably.

  • An urban railway power substation consists of three thyristor dual converters. Two converters are connected to up and down trolley line to supply the electric energy or feed the regenerative energy back to the distribution. When the two converters break down, the remaining converter is used in an emergency. One thyristor dual converter system (TDCS) manages the energy of two or three railway stations. If the TDCS fails, the trains stop operating. To solve the problem, this paper proposes the three parallel operation control algorithm of thyristor dual converter system using the emergency converter. The broken TDCS can be replaced by the emergency converter in other TDCS. The effectiveness of this proposed control is verified by simulation.
