  • Due to rapid economic growth, the usage of residential cooling electrical appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators has increased dramatically for the last decades. In other to reduce its energy consumption, the authorities have applied energy efficiency standards for principal appliances, including refrigerator. This paper estimates the distribution of refrigerators using the Bass Diffusion Model and then performs economic analysis corresponding to enhancement of energy efficiency more correctly than existing methods.

  • Enthalpy transport in a pulse tube was investigated by two-dimensional analysis of mass, momentum and energy equations assuming that the axial temperature gradient in the pulse tube is constant. Time-averaged second-order conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy were used to show the existence of steady mass streaming and enthalpy streaming. Effects of axial temperature gradient, velocity amplitude ratio and heat transfer between the gas and the wall on the steady mass streaming and enthalpy streaming were shown. Enthalpy loss due to the steady mass streaming is zero for basic and orifice pulse tube refrigerators, but it is proportional to the axial temperature gradient and steady mass flow rate through a pulse tube for double inlet pulse tube refrigerators.

  • In this paper, a guideline of axial flow fan design for noise reduction of refrigerators is p resented. Refrigerators have components which have a role to screen particular frequency air borne-noise which is generated by an axial flow fan set in them. Effective ways to use the particular characteristic of refrigerators are shown in this study. As a result of application of the methods, we reduced the noise of the target systems by more than 3 dB(A) from the viewpoint of air-borne noise produced by the axial flow fan set.

  • Thermal analysis on a Linde-Hampson hydrogen liquefaction system using cryogenic refrigerators as precooling has been carried out. Three commercially available models of cryogenic refrigerators, such as CTI l020CP, CVI CGR009 and CVI CGR011, are considered in the performance analysis. The effect of ortho-para conversion process during hydrogen liquefaction is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimal hydrogen mass flow rate and the optimal compressed pressure exist for the maximum hydrogen liquefaction rate. The optimal compressed pressure is increased in the range of 80 - 120 bar with an increase in the hydrogen mass flow rate. It is also found that better performance could be obtained with a cryogenic refrigerator, which produces high cooling capacity at precooling temperature in the range of 80 - 100 K.

  • A cycle analysis was performed for 2-stage expansion Claude refrigerators by a numerical method. The refrigerators are under recent development such that the reciprocating expanders of Collins cycle are replaced by new turboexpanders. A computer simulation program was written to predict the coefficient of performance of the refrigerators for several input parameters. It was found out that there exist unique optimum values for the ratio of expanded mass through the turboexpanders to the total mass and for the intermediate pressure of the 2-stage expansion. The maximum coefficient of performance was about $5{\times}10^{-4}$ at the optimal operation.

  • This paper describes a design of the helium-recondensing system utilizing cascade Roebuck refrigerators. Superconducting generator or motor has the superconducting field wind-ing in its rotor that should be continuously cooled by cryogen. Since liquid helium transfer from the stationary system to the rotor is problematic, cumbersome, and inefficient, the novel concept of a rotating helium-recondensing system is contrived. The vaporized cold helium inside the rotor is isothermally compressed by centrifugal force and expanded sequentially in cascade refrigerators until the helium is recondensed at 4.2 K. There is no helium coupling between the rotor and the stationary liquid helium storage. Thermodynamic analysis of the cascade refrigeration system is performed to determine the key design parameters. The loss mechanisms are explained to identify entropy generation that degrades the performance of the system.

  • A PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) diagnostic technique for the evaluation of the flow characteristics in refrigerator is introduced. Smoke particles of which density is small enough to follow up the air flow are used for visualization of the air flows in the refrigerators. A rectangular room model is tested for the verifications of the dignostic technique. By evaluating the turbulent intensity and the deviation value of the turbulent intensity distribution that were obtained from PIV results, an optimal ventilating condition is suggested. The constructed technique is used for the diagnostics on the flow of an actual refrigerator. It has experimentally proved that the present technique is able to evaluate the ventilation conditions of refrigerators.

  • This paper evaluated the 12 sensory measures suitable for evaluating taste of kimchi stored for 64 maturing days in the three kimchi refrigerators each made by the three different electronics companies respectively. The panel composed of 6 married women and 6 married man tasted sample of kimchi 8 times during the 64 maturing days. Analysis of variance results showed that among the 12 sensory measures sour smell, fresh smell, fermenting smell, sour taste, fresh taste, sensory satisfaction, and maturing degree were sensitive to differentiate both maturing days and refrigerators. Among sensory measures, maturing degree showed the most consistently increasing pattern during maturing days and the most consistently differentiating pattern for the refrigerators.

  • Manual and predictive defrosting method is used in current refrigerators, which have several problems in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. fuming the defrosting system on by the amount of frost remains to be an important problem which has to be improved by refrigerator manufacturers. The sensing of the amount of frost by FDS(Frost Detecting Sensor) and its proper mounting point are investigated in the paper. Also the realization of actual defrosting system through experiments of operation, energy consumption and sensing mechanism is presented.
